| Also, I don't know what relation or connections could be drawn between this song and "Skeptic" from Point #1. | |

As others have stated, I also see evolution as a theme in this song. It's difficult (at least in my mind) to figure out what exactly Pete is saying about evolution as a theory that explains the existence of humanity. I tend to think he leans against it. Here's a breakdown of my interpretation: "But whoever knows / Nobody knows" (We can argue about the origin of the universe, but nobody really knows) "Why he'd roll those eyes / those heartless eyes" (The proponent of Darwinian evolution who can't believe that anyone would think the world was created by an intelligent being) "I won't pretend to lie / Once more protect my blinded sight" (I don't care if you think I am ignorant, I'll lay my beliefs out there) "You'd say I came from a fish / You mock the place where I exist" (The world didn't just happen by accident, that does it a disservice) What I find ironic though, is that the place the protagonist is defending is the very place he hates and is trying to escape from. "That world is calling / so I'm crawling back to sea" (That world I don't like, that mocks me is imploring me wake up and follow the crowd. I'd (sarcastically) rather de-evolve back to being a fish and not have to endure this criticism or the evil in humanity in general) "Against the surge of waves that / held us / In that ancient grip beneath / retreat to safer waters" (continuing the de-evolution, back when we were fish, without arms and legs, the waters held us captive. Things were simple and safe. Not crippled by the the failings of humanity) "Still learning what chaos kills / but whoever cares / nobody cares like you" (We may seem pretty evolved as humans now, but why can't we learn how not to hurt and kill each other. We have a problem with no apparent solution, and you (the opposing party) don't seem to care. "Why we'd abandon time / just shut the door" (This is confusing. It could refer to those who do not believe strictly in evolution as the source of humanity, who say that the world is only a few thousand years old shutting their minds. Or maybe it is the protagonist responding to his blindness charge by saying, get out of here and shut the door.) "Why we'd go to the wall, claim less is more" (I'm having trouble coming up with an analogy for the wall. I think the claim may refer to a belief in a shorter history of the earth actually meaning more (the existence of God??)) "This city's saving grace" (They were recording in Las Vegas, sin city, but could just as well refer to anyplace. Maybe with faith it could be redeemed but nobody really knows for sure, and nobody seems to care.) It definitely projects a feeling of disgust, aloneness, and self-doubt. Whatever it means, awesome song and one of their best. |

Thematically, this song seems similar to Comfortable Liar. Someone lied, or misled and it causes pain and suffering. "refusing to rust" and "healing has to begin in the past" are references to the fact that time doesn't seem to change anything. The hurts stings just as bad now as it did then. The thing I really don't understand is the begining. "Afraid to blink, I might lose the sun" and "Yes, you're my son." A reference to God? He's losing his faith (in God/ humanity?) because people are phony. |

| I think the title really says it all. Pete sees a liar(s) around him and it really eats at his conscience. He can't understand how others can so easily supress their own conscience and decieve and hurt people. | |

| In an interview I read he said it was about an ex-girlfriend. He was out on tour or whatever and she showed up at their house and went up to his room (alone of course) and left him a note. His sister told him about it when he came back and he thought it would make cool song. It did. | |

| I'd agree that this song is about meeting someone and then being disappointed by who they turn out to be. Initially, you judge the person based on "good traits though few". Eventually you come to realize that there are irreconcilable differences (faults). You want to so desperately to be with that person that you'd like to just forget your own convictions. You're stuck in a state of conflict (too scared to run) but ultimately you can't cave in. | |
