This song means to me... Being exiled to work in the States, not knowing a living soul, and dressing up each night just to get wasted. Sometimes enjoying it... sometimes not. |

Great song. I think nicolenicolenicole has it spot on. I've always taken this song to be a particularly English standpoint on Bush and America, moreso since i have having spent six months in San Francisco. In a response to another previous poster, the English have dealt with terrorism for hundreds of years, so I find it unlikely that the monster is that, as it is only really portrayed as a scary monster in the US (they have acknowledged a fear of it, and many would say that that means the terrorists have won). I had always thought that the monster in this song is either Bush, the military might of America, or the ruination of culture around the world to fit with the American model. Regarding 'sleep'. Journalism and reporting are very much more limited in the US, or at least fewer US citizens actively pursue information from elsewhere in the world, leaving many people 'asleep' to the exact manner in which it is happening. We don't really want a monster (like that) or loonies (like that) takin' over, but we are powerless to stop it, so we might as well give up, and go to sleep like the mass populous behind it. Or should we? The English are unfortunately acting as go-betweens in the current war ferago, so maybe they are the ones tip-toing around this giant to tie the US down a little. I hope so... |
