Incubus – Megalomaniac Lyrics 21 years ago
Kia Ora fellow Incubus fans

Firstly, I must note how this song cannot be about Bush. Why? “I hear you on my radio, You permeate my screen”; Bush has had the least number of press conferences of any modern American President, and he isn’t exactly bubbling with articulate matter to throw to the masses. This entire song denotes that Boyd is ranting at someone with a much greater awareness of the world – and we all agree by now that Bush is not up there in the IQ stakes (can anyone say Bush legacy at Yale, and C- student with a bit of daddy’s help *money*).
I like the sacrilegious elements of the song, chuck in Jesus and Elvis and you’ve got a smooth combination J. But seriously, I really don’t think that Bush has the faculty of mind to be a megalomaniac – maybe we’re looking at Dick Cheney, Donald Trump, or any other of America’s privileged “WASPs”. Hell, what about Rupert Murdoch?

Now to the juicy bits – political debate! I watched in dismay as Bush yet again waged war against the American public and bluffed his way into the presidency. Karl Rove has a lot of explaining to do, may his pernicious soul rot half a grain a day, he lies to the heart. (Pardon my Shakespeare). There is no questioning that the rest of the world hates America – there is no way to get around that. Ever stop and wonder why? No, we’re not jealous – America is only 18th or so on the UN’s Human Development Index. We are constantly bombarded with the symptoms of the consumer culture that is so praised and enshrined in your way of life. We see how arrogant and utterly STUPID you are on a daily basis.

The facts – there was no declaration of war approved by the UN Security Council: thus, the invasion of Iraq is ILLEGAL! You have no right to be in that country, and the “insurgency” can be compared to that of the French under German control in WWII. America has gone in and killed 100,000 people. You never see that total flashed on the news (and I know, because we are unlucky enough to get quite a few American news channels here in little old NZ).
Just think about that for a moment. Bush is an idiot, lies, and invades. 100,000 people are now dead just because of that one action. Do you feel no shame? Have you no mercy? Innocent people have lost their lives because you need to drive you gas-guzzling SUVs around the town.

I don’t think that Kerry is the be-all and end-all, and I really don’t rate him high above Bush. In all this, have you ever wondered why America, in its quest to bring democracy to the world, doesn’t even have a democracy of its own? The Electoral College is quite reminiscent of other 18th Century institutions such as the Bundestag in Germany, but the modern world has outgrown such undemocratic processes. Maybe it’s time for you to hold a real election, and grow up and out of being a two-party state. Oh wait, I forgot about the Military-Industrial complex - I guess you’re stuck like that for a while yet, more’s the pity.

OK, as this is my first post I might have to wrap it up, but one final note – secession is still a viable option – go the United States of Canada!
