| The Tallest Man on Earth – The Gardener Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
If you take it literally, there are people that don't want the narrator and the girl together, so the narrator kills them and buries them in the garden ("fertilize the roses" "death will grow my jasmine" "buried by the lilies" "buried by the daisies"). They dance in the garden, and the narrator gets pleasure out of the fact that those that he now has the girl, the garden, and no opposition to their love.
He's a killer, but he still wants to be a prince( or the tallest man) to the girl. ("ain't no frog kissing your hand" is like the fairy tale of the frog turning into a prince, so he's already the prince) |

"don't let her see your cardinal eyes"
Cardinal is also a shade of red (where the bird gets the name from), so you could have cardinal eyes from crying or being upset. |

| Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Some Loud Thunder Lyrics

|
It's about how music on the radio and TV sounds compared to "underground music." It's a commentary on the loudness and distortion added to bands in post-production, as opposed to the original sounds of bands. |

I love the reference to his bicycle.
"on my fixie with the chopped horns turned" is a reference to his fixed gear bicycle with a common handlebar modification. |

I've read that it's about Ryan Adams when they witnessed his wild antics at Austin City Limits Fest when he was with Whiskeytown.
So, it's less of a feud and more of a "We've been around longer than you, watch yourself or you are going to end up dead." |

I see the Bob Dylan references: "Thinking about the government" and "Mixing up the medicine" from Subterranean Homesick Blues. And then "Bobby does it better." I assume it's about times with a friend and listening to Dylan. Great song. |

| The National – Mr. November Lyrics
|
I interpreted this as a "comeback" sort of song. Like descendent said, he used to be admired.
"I'm the new blue blood." Blue blood refers to a long family tradition of wealth, so to be the New Blue Blood, it's like starting over a new tradition of success and wealth.
"The Great White Hope" was the nickname given to a boxer who was supposed to be able to beat African American boxer Jack Johnson, but lost which is another reference to failure.
"I won't fuck us over, I'm Mr November." is like the other Reggie Jackson references, but for the song, the protagonist has messed something up in a crucial situation but assures that he will make it okay.
Jackson always pulled through in the Playoffs in October, but the protagonist is Mr November and will make it work out after he's already failed. |

| The White Stripes – The Big Three Killed My Baby Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
How could anyone confuse this for anything other than the Big 3 Automakers? 1. The White Stripes are from Detroit aka Motorcity aka WHERE THE BIG 3 AUTOMAKERS ARE LOCATED 2. lyrics in reference to automobiles: "their ideas made me want to spit
a hundred dollars goes down the pit
30,000 wheels are rollin'
and my stick shift hands are swollen"
"why dont you take the day off and try to repair
a billion others dont seem to care
better ideas are stuck in the mud
the motors runnin' on tuckers blood
dont let them tell you the future's electric
cause gasolines not measured in metric
30,000 wheels are spinnin'
and oil company faces are grinnin'
now my hands are turnin' red"
"im about to have another blowout
im about to have another blowout"
Really, that is surely about the record industry... or World War II, right guys?
It's about how the Big 3 killed Automotive innovation.
How could anyone still think otherwise after the correct comment by "a scar in the sky" |

It should be "I am so unsatisfied" instead of "Someone satisfied" because it's a reference to the Replacements song "Unsatisfied." Top notch tuneage. |

This reply is almost 5 years later, but if you are like Salome, you are a horrible person. I think everyone can relate to having a significant other like this. We try so hard to keep them and make them happy, but they can just move on to someone else so easily with no feeling at all, while we are left a hollow person wondering what went wrong. One of my favorite songs ever. |

It's about dating a girl from a 'the perfect family' and dealing with their hypocritical conservative values, because her dad actually deals drugs out of the church, her sister is a slut, and her brother is gay. So, the Minister/Drug Dealer father hates the boyfriend, so the boyfriend wonders why he even bothers with the drive and not getting any since he has no real love for the girl, but the drive keeps him from thinking about his problems in his life. It's pretty self explanatory story. |

| Ryan Adams – Starting to Hurt Lyrics

|
"I'm high on forever and always together"
This part is comparing a relationship to a drug. The good parts of a relationship (thinking about being with someone forever) are like the high, and when a relationship goes bad, it's like coming down from a drug. So, he's saying that everything was good, but it's going bad. |

I heard that this song was about the Challenger blowing up in 1986, hence the space theme and it being "The Final Countdown." I honestly don't see why a Swedish band would care about the failure of another country's space program, or why they think they were leaving for Venus, but oh well. |

The album came out in 2000, so that doesn't make much sense.
I think it's about how they are from DC, and they want to see everything that people know DC for to go away. Everyone knows the Beltway, and the monuments, and they would care less if that all went away. |
