i think he's talking about someone who feels out of place in their usual surroundings. a boy who's constantly seeing through the surface and feeling better than everyone around him, in a somewhat arrogant way (this town is all in hell). like he's better than everyone, pretty much wherever he goes. and yes, he could run from here, but he's afraid he'll end up (or be cast) in some place where he feels just the same.
what he means by 'boneless' sort of escapes me. i have some ideas, but i think it's pretty much open to interpretation. |

more than believing in yourself, it means you will attract people that are like you. when you act like someone different, trying to be something that's not genuinely you, you will only meet that same kind of people.
stick to that which you believe in and you will find someone like you will eventually. |

I actually think it's about not being able to get over someone. You see yourself making the same mistakes over again with other people. "I was on the wagon, I thought I was done" could mean at least two different things. First, you thought you were done finding the right person, but it was suddenly it was all torn apart or maybe it means that you thought you were done getting over that person, but somehow he/she is still part of your life, surprisingly enough. "When one falls in, another comes out" could mean that one of the two decided to break up and became a totally different person, as if he/she had fallen into a hole (perhaps falling in love for someone else) and was completely changed after that. Finally, i think the chorus refers to this idea of everyone else being just 'them', saying you have to be with someone, but not really connecting to you. You're with someone just because you're supposed to, not because you love them like you did love that person you now miss. "I like what you say" would then mean "I like what my real love says" which is so much greater than everyone's idea of being with someone just for the sake of it.
Albeit it may be just a little too late. |

does anyone else think they sing 'all the places she should have been'? if that is the case, then i think the song is about starting a new relationship after a recent break up. sounds to me like they're going away, trying to avoid all the bad thoughts after such a harsh decision (breaking up -- "don't think of it, don't think of all the places she should have been"). and now he's with someone else, telling himself to feel ok and move on.
even if that's not the case, i prefer it this way.. |

The final word in the final sentence you ever uttered to me was love
seems as if he's trying to show her that she can't deny the love she has for him. a brilliant song indeed with an awesome chorus and a great ending. the band is really on to something.. perhaps their best album so far |

a woman like that has a moral obligation to be a singer. not allowing the world to listen to her voice in such a pretty song would be a major mistake |

i'm pretty sure it's a break-up song ("i don't want to want you to go"). in my opinion, what happened is that he was living this relationship in which he wanted to believe. he tricked himself trying to make it seem like it was good for him and the other person, but it started to became too complicated for him. tricking wasn't enough anymore, he was brought down.
as for the first lines, maybe one could understand that no matter if how well he writes, it's not going to matter, because it's all completely different from what the other person is expecting or could understand (considering all his previous lies).
by joking it's over i understand that they break up and then go back together often, because of small things, but that is not enough to solve the bigger problem. sometimes he does feel like it's a good relationship ("each time the sweetness is returning") and appreciate they're still together.
but in the end he can't go on anymore ("down came the sky and everything went black"). he suddenly felt akward with her presence and everything seemed out of place. he finally realized the relationship wasn't working. he had been lying to himself and to her. |

i just downloaded an acoustic version of this song which is actually quite different, because there are no falsettoes. it's more like he's "shouting out" the notes. i don't know how to describe it :p but look it up on slsk, give it a try. |
