I went to the SR show tonight where they played this song. Spencer said, "Sarah Palin will kill all nations. And on that note..." Then they went right into Us Ones in Between. So, maybe there really are political motifs in this song. |

"It’s based on the song “California Dreaming” [by the Mamas & the Papas]. He says a line about halfway through the song that makes you realize there’s a woman involved. The line is “If I didn’t tell her / I could leave today.” He hadn’t mentioned anything about the lover until halfway through the song, and I just think it’s really cool for that. I wrote [this] song from the point of view of the woman he left behind. " |

This sounds like another break-up song. Listening to the title and the first stanza, he seems fed-up and exasperated by another fight they had and he doesn't know what to think. "It's just the second time we lost hte war" - yeah they kept trying to make it work but it just blew up in their faces again. In the end, he just concludes he doesn't need anyone in his life and never did before. |

It sounds to me like she's just escaped a bad past, perhaps a longterm relationship. She will still be tainted from the past. The fresh taste of freedom is intimidating at first, but she knows this is for the best. What awesome lyrics. :) |

It sounds like she's jaded and cynical after a relationship gone sour, and she's telling herself to just forget about love because it's a futile endeavor. I can totally relate to everything she says here. |
