I'd like to comment on the whole album, Ys. It's an interesting album and I mean that in a few senses of the word - brave, difficult, experimental, awkward and self-indulgent. I hope she returns to the form of The Milk-Eyed Mender. |

THis is the only song I've heard off the new album. It is not yet released in Australia. It's a very brave move. I didn't enjoy this song. Maybe it'll grow on me. |

What is it with " bones " ? They feature in at least 2 of her other songs. I am a poet myself and would wonder if I repeated the same word/concepts myself. |

As to meaning and a need to analyze - Joanna Newsom, in an interview in Australia last year, said that he words cannot be explained in any other words than the actual song. She said if they could be, there would be no need for the song itself. I am against over-analyzing anything. |

Yes, it does make senmses but -
A real experience, the way that you describe it, may be true but it is only a small part of the song. What ( and how) she sings is WAY beyond an actual event.
That's what I mean by analyzing her songs as " pointless". They are a life of their own, another life. |

To analyze this woman's lyrics is pointless.
They are great. They sound great. They are enjoyable. Are they going to change George Bush ?
No. |

Yep, she sure plays with what she says, which is cool. There is another track, " Peach,Plum,Pear,", where she seems to say " whore" on the CD but on a live recording sings " horse". AND, both could easily fit. SO, it matters ? |

Yes, I have seen the video referred to by KF, thanks ! She certainly sings " horse ". It doesn't sound like that, though, on the CD. As I said, originally - some kind of self-censorship ? Who cares ? It all adds to the mystery. |

In 2 songs she speaks of " white coats ". In this one she speaks of a counseller, or councillor according to the CD lyrics sheet. And also, " shall we go outside ?" and " I slept all day " sounds like time spent in an Institution. None of the interviews or mini-bios I have read speak of her being in an Institition or some such, but it would seems so. No ? |

The first two lines grab me. I first thought she sang " No means no where I come from ", but , given that, I love the lines anyway....I can't even get passed them to the rest of the song. |

I got the lyrics from the actual album sheet. If it's what it sounds like, I'd say it was a kind of self-censorship, maybe to avoid external censorship.
( I find that kind of strange because it's not as tho JP's work is likely to attract wide attention, even thi it should !) |

A line above says " made me belt like a horse - the lyric sheet says made me bold like a horse " but it sounds like " made me bold like a whore ". Any comments ? ( BTW, I am 54 years old and Joanna is the most exciting thing I have heard in at least 2 decades ! ) |
