Posted by N/U/T/T/Y/? on 04-09-2006 @ 04:14:55 PM i might not be thinking outside the box here, but i get the impression it's talking about there being so much to learn and too little time to learn it in - the particular verse that gives that impression is So where's the stars ? Up in the sky And what's the moon ? A big balloon We'll never know unless we grow There's so much world outside the door that's how i interpret it anyway I agree with that; that's how I interpreted it too. |

Well, the interpretations posted here are pretty diverse and all seem suitable, and I like the writers' block interpretation mentioned by someone, but personally when I first heard the song I thought it was about ambition and dreams. Waiting and waiting and wanting and longing for it to come: the time when you acheive your dream(Yeah, how long must you wait for it?) ...and wondering whether it'll be worth all the toil in the end: (Yeah, how long must you pay for it?) "If you go, if you go, Leave me here down on my own, Well I wait for you" And if that dream seems to be out of sight, or seems to be gone, if that hope abandons him, he'll wait for it still. "I was scared, I was scared, Tired and underprepared, But I wait for you." Scared that he won't acheive it. Tired of waiting and longing. Underprepared to face the future, whether he'll acheive what he wants or not. But he keeps on waiting. "Sing it Please, please, please, Come back come sing to me, To me, me. Come on and sing it out now, now Come on and sing it out To me, me Come back come sing it" He wants to hear the sound of hope.(that sounds weird but makes sense, haha) :) love the song. |

| I heard this song by chance and quickly searched for its lyrics. They're so very wonderfully meaningful. | |

| Gosh I really, really, really love this song. It is so full of meaning and I agree with Idi...it feels so good to listen to it when you're gloomy and when you get up and you've got school. I never used to like U2 that much before, but now I do, a lot. =) | |

I think this song has some sexual connotations...I heard that the band said they didn't want to have that sort of image because it "ruined their credibility", and that they weren't going to make any more "raunchy" videos. Anyway, I like this song, and there's a part at the end of it where you can hear in the background there's someone singing "she will be loved". |

| I think this song is one of Vanessa's best. To cut an awfully looooong story shoooort. | |
| Vanessa Carlton – The Wreckage Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Yeah, it seems kiiind of like a song about suicide...It's like death is so fast, and unpredictable, and well, easy, and can happen anytime, and she's just wishing it would happen. | |
| Vanessa Carlton – C'est La Vie Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Well, I've been in a situation that this song describes...not with a boy but with some of my girl friends. The boy in this song's lying about how he loves her etc etc and thinks she'll believe him but she doesn't. Great song.....needless to say haha... | |

| Haha, I really agree with Nikki-Nikkster. I feel like this sometimes. Heh. | |

I agree with sarahmansour, sagitar and cheerprincess. I think it's definetly about regretting something. Could be anything--failing an exam, being on drugs, breaking up. Or, Maybe she used to be successful yet proud and haughty but knows she didn't do it honestly(e.g. maybe got money through fraud of sumthing)...and now the pride's leading to her downfall---or maybe she's seriously regretting what she's done,"As darkness(maybe of regret?) quickly steals the light(her pride) that shined within her eyes;..day in which the sun will take her ARTIFICIAL LIGHT"...And she's scared that people may see this guilt, regret, and soothes her mind with lies that she's great and rich etc... "She slowly swallows all her fear and soothes her mind with lies" .....and the first parts,"once upon a year gone by she saw herself give in" She saw herself give in to her greed? and..."she saw what could have been" she saw that she could have achieved what she got honestly. I know many people will have interpretations of this song that will differ, but this is what really came to my head when i heard the song. It reminds me rather of Dorian Gray from the novel,"The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde. |
