| Crooked Fingers – You Must Build A Fire Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
The song at first seems to be about an unknown future love (because of the opening lines about "searching for another love"), but after the first verse, I feel like the song shifts to addressing the one who broke his heart, as if to say "You left me able to love again, but I will wait for you to return." I will wait for you another night Cause I know you won't leave me behind This declaration of faith, coupled with the following lines from a later verse seem to speak to the person who recently left. Those wicked things, the wicked things you do Well, I pay them no mind Cause I know you'll be back in time This is an absolutely beautiful and heart-breaking song. |

| Feist – Sea Lion Woman Lyrics | 18 years ago |

This is a very interesting take on Nina Simone's "See-Line Woman" (http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=115553) The original seems to be about a certain woman, or a certain kind of woman: promiscuous, lascivious, lecherous. Feist's take seems to express many different women, or the many facets of womanhood. |

| Broken Social Scene – Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
I was listening to Anthems... this evening and a new perspective hit me. Not only is she talking about adolescence in general, but about her's in particular. The older, "grown-up" version is looking back lovingly at the person she was growing up, the person that turned into what she is now. She uses the second-person pronouns to refer to the young girl to not only separate her from herself, but to allow the audience to more easily identify with her. Brilliant. |
