Neutral Milk Hotel – Communist Daughter Lyrics 19 years ago
Anyone ever read 1984?

in it this girl named julia sort of used sex as her own way to rebel against an oppressive, omnipotent government.

I dunno, just popped into my head with all this talk about sex and communism.

Modest Mouse – The View Lyrics 20 years ago
Well, i always thought that sort of the basis for this song is tht whole idea that you cant be happy unless you have experienced sadness, similar to how much better water tastes when you are parched for thirst. He says "if it takes shit to make bliss then i feel pretty blissfully" which could be saying that for the amount of shit hes been through, he deserves to be feelin pretty blissful. or it could be a drug reference. who knows. but my favorite line is the "if lifes not beautiful without the pain well than i would rather never ever see beauty again" because here he takes that idea, which has become popular beleif, and naturally says the opposite. Im thinkin he was bitter when he wrote this. ahem.

Neutral Milk Hotel – The King of Carrot Flowers Pts. 2 and 3 Lyrics 21 years ago
could be any of those... but what first came to my mind was sarcasm. Maybe it's just cause I am athiest/agnostic but it seems to me that, well, seeing as how the entire album is pretty much related to anne frank who was killed for being jewish, perhaps he is sayin "Jesus christ i love you" because he was more or less the reason she was killed. maybe some irony, too? Just some ideas i am throwing out there.

Billy Idol – White Wedding Lyrics 21 years ago
Im surprised no one here has accused him of being racist. just kidding, I'm pretty sure he isn't. That would be pretty damn funny if he was though.

Sublime – Pool Shark Lyrics 21 years ago
I remember once I was talking to someone and sublime came up in the convorsation. I asked him if he liked sublime and he said "they're good, but too many people like them so i dont listen to them much." This made me very mad, because just bacause a lot of people, stupid and smart, like a certain band, doesn't make them bad. Hell I listen to a lot of indie but I still love sublime, and that is cause they are GOOD, not cause they are unknown. This song is a good demonstration of this. I still remember how my broher learned to play tis on guitar when i was younger and told me that he wrote this predicting his own death by heroin overdose, then told me the circumstances surrounding Brads tragic death; then he proceeded to sing it beautifully, and i was quietly crying by the time he finished. I am a guy and i dont cry very often, but this song has always struck a chord with me. One of the saddest songs in the world, right with tears in heaven by Eric Clapton.

Zero 7 – In The Waiting Line Lyrics 21 years ago
DAMN! Somebody already stole my explanation. I think this song is about death, and how we are all wasting time waiting for it. The whole "everyone's sayin different things to me" is probably related to everyones explanation of the afterlife. Heaven, reincarnation, etc. Also, the song seems to condemn what people do whith their life, taking things from each other and not making a difference orreally taking advantage of the life they have. Just living, working from nine to five, and waiting to die.

Marcy Playground – A Cloak of Elvenkind Lyrics 21 years ago
I am pretty sure this is kind of referring to the imagination of a boy. Like, a strict mother who wants him to be a proper boy, but secretly this boy wants to be a wizard. I know that I am not getting this out quite right, but maybe you could see what I am trying to get at here.

Marcy Playground – Sex And Candy Lyrics 21 years ago
Not to put anyone down, but according to various interviews with the band: Violet is completely right about the song's origin, and yes, they got their name from the school playground where the lead singer went. Create theories as you will, though, because they are pretty fun to read.

The Shins – New Slang Lyrics 21 years ago
Yea you guys are right, garden state was awesome. Anyway, I think one of the big things in this song is that ignorance is bliss. Kinda going off what Laura said, people are happier when they dont know the bad things in this world. The most obvious example is "I was happier then with no mind set." I think that the song is a little bit sad, about some one who wishes to live the carefree life that he sees in other people, but he doubts he will ever acheive it because he knows too much about the way the world works.
