| Pixies – Dig For Fire Lyrics | 20 years ago |

I'm inclined to think that, given Black's lyrical tendencies, this song is much simpler than anything we've hit on here. Probably something like "I thought it was a good verse." That said, here's one slightly poetic interpretation. We have to see that here, the song contrasts "the mother lode" with "fire." The expression "mother lode" usually connotes someone looking for something already created, e.g. gold, buried treasure, etc. Juxtaposed with this, "fire" here may symbolize inspiration, as in a spark. So, the people in the song are saying, "I'm not just trying to gorge myself on what already exists; I'm trying to make something new." Just my $0.02. Thoughts? |

| Aimee Mann – Pavlov's Bell Lyrics | 21 years ago |

Here's an interesting fact: Mariel Hemingway, actress and daughter of Ernest Hemingway, lived and lives in Idaho. Her life has been plagued by suicides: Her grandfather, her sister, and several others in the immediate family. Perhaps this song is the ghost of Ernest Hemingway, or someone else, asking Mariel to stop them from committing suicide, the habitual act that is like ringing pavlov's bell in her family, and to take them home instead? The clues are there: - "Hold my hand on takeoff" - Steady me as I contemplate suicide - "Someone nearly fell" - I almost offed myself - "History shows there's not a chance in hell"...that I'll make it; everyone in this family kills themselves. Yes? No? Maybe? |

| Radiohead – The National Anthem Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I am always intrigued by the clip that the song plays at the very end. It sounds like a vaguely robotic voice yelling "START!"or somesuch. Any idea what that is, what it says, and what it means? | |

2861U2, I think you're right on about African hunger and economic problems. I think Bono offers a really good-natured, but cutting indictment of US policy: "Would you deny for others What you demand for yourself?" We demand high technology and good drugs, but don't do enough to help the rest of the world achieve those aims. "You speak of signs and wonders I need something other " We're full of hopeful rhetoric about medical miracles, but concrete support and assistance is often hard to come by. "With a mouth full of teeth You ate all your friends And you broke every heart thinking every heart mends" This one to me is really interesting. Modern conservatism tends to think that you can eliminate government help and regulations, and people will survive through solely human ingenuity and hard work. Bono is recasting that idea, saying that it's easy and irresponsible to just assume people can make themselves better - sometimes, you can't make it on your own. :-) "Where you live should not decide Whether you live or whether you die " Obvious, but moving. All in all, a great song. Quickly becoming my favorite from HTDAAB as well, tied with "A Man and A Woman." |
