I was told that in an interview with one of the directors of the TV show, that this was an anti-war song. As the Monkees were mainly pop at the time, the song was written with that kind of vibe, and was subtle in its protest. There was a military mustering station located in Clarksville Tennessee, hence, "Take the last train to Clarkville...And I dont know if I'm ever coming home." |

Songs can have multiple meanings, and doubtless this one does too. Leaving England for tax reasons or touring the Alps can lend analogy to the great struggle against Evil, as epitomized in Lord of the Rings or the Teutonic myths of Thor and Odin (both very important to J.Page during this time period). Should evil prevail, the sky will fall--Atlas is the giant of Greek mythology who holds the sky on his shoulders.
I have seen several interpretations of these lyrics, and think that there is one important mistranslation above: "Oh to touch the dream, eyes inside that never have seen, yeah." The mystery of the All.
And definitely one of the very best rock songs of all time, period. |

The Biblical reference to "Page 1" infers the beginning of the end. Thus, by Christ (Charlie) appearing to fulfill the prophecies, he brought about the possibilities of Armaggedon as set out in Revelation. The result, then, is to immanentise the eschaton: "stealing the handle", putting history on a linear path to the end of time: "The train it wont stop going, no way to slow down." |
