This song explores an adulterous relationship—similar to “Of minor profits and their prostitute wives”. You can think about this song on more than one level. The adulterous marriage, or the adulterous relationship we have with God. I think it’s interesting to frame the Christian life within the context of this song—God as the husband and us as the wife. It works and hits home pretty well. |

This is a great song--one of the top three best Pedro the Lion songs--very clever. Using sarcasm and arguing from the point of view of the opposite of what Bazan believes, he uncovers the ridiculousness of the argument. Why should we believe in a God who changes with the times, as a relativist would say? If the sun is setting the same way it has for the history of the earth, why should God have to change to keep up with the “brilliance of men”. How arrogant! I love it. |

This song is not about losing faith in God. It is about what the christian community has become as seen by an outsider. Bazan takes on the role of someone visiting a church, trying to understand who God is. The Christian community is so caught up in the wrong things--projecting an outward image, trying to show they can live a perfect life--that they are neglecting what is really important.
"Can someone please tell me a story of sinners ransomed from the fall?" The Christian community is getting away from what is really important and is instead caught up in a Christian Culture that in many ways reflects the secular culture. "I'm falling on my sword"--if this whole thing is about projecing an image and participating in a christian culture--it's not worth it. We need to know Jesus and who he is. |
