Phoenix – 1901 Lyrics 16 years ago
Also a side note, I don't know for sure what he is actually saying but I think fold it and falling can both make sense. Falling as a reference to the Eiffel Tower, since most French don't view it as important as the rest of the world. And fold it, talking about the art movement. "Counting all different ideas drifting away." Basically saying that some people will be forced to reject such a movement since they might not be able to understand it.

Phoenix – 1901 Lyrics 16 years ago
I found a website that explains a lot of the historical references in Phoenix songs. I took the part about 1901 and pasted it here, I found it very interesting. Here is a link to the website though: http://chicago.decider.com/articles/pencils-down-deciphering-phoenixs-historical-rock,29021/

Song: “1901”

Sample lyrics: “Girlfriend, oh your girlfriend is drifting away / past and present, 1855-1901 / watch them build up a meteor tower / think it's not gonna stay anyway / think it's overrated.”

A reference to: A time period in French history that included the famous Exposition Universelle of 1900 and the Art Nouveau movement. The “tower” most likely refers to the Eiffel Tower, completed as an entrance to 1889's Exposition Universelle and loathed at the time by many Parisians.

Historical lesson: Memorable World's Fairs demand timeless symbols. The Eiffel Tower was one of many iconic structures built for a World's Fair, like the Crystal Palace in London, the Unisphere in New York, and the Space Needle in Seattle. This means we can expect Knoxville’s Sunsphere from the 1982 World’s Fair to become a global monument and the undisputed symbol of America any year now, right?

Song’s actually about: A nostalgic look at Paris at the turn of the 20th century, when Jules Verne’s sci-fi tales were regarded as the approaching future. Lead singer Thomas Mars calls the Exposition Universelle of 1900 the "most futuristic moment" for Paris, so when the fair is over, all of Paris is stuck “counting all different ideas drifting away.” In the spirit of Verne, somebody should’ve built an idea-catching machine.

this song needs more at the end, i know people will say the simple piano is great throughout the song but i think it needs something at the end when he is singing the ahh's. or maybe they could end the cd with this song too and change the lyrics to make sense with the ending. be cool.

The Early November – The One That You Hated Lyrics 18 years ago
i think its "to learn how to love your worst disguise"

first verse is an argument, all the lows are the father and singing is the mother. second verse is discussion between the father and his father about what to do with the boy. the key line in this whole song is "all these settings never made it better" its used to justify everyones position and point of view about what to do with the kid. the mother and father just want to run, the grandfather thinks he'll be better off since he has money but the father doesn't agree since he doesnt like the way he was raised, then the last verse is saying if the kid's grandparents took the kid to raise him and then gave back to the real parents when he was a certain age (which is what happens in the path); it will still be a bad solution for the kid. All three cd's are about how you deal with your mistakes and how people can be hipocrits until they actually go through the situation in which they are criticizing so much

The Early November – A Bigger Meaning Lyrics 19 years ago
yeah well dean grew up hating his dad because of what he did, which was quite selfish. however, dean is only fulfilling the circle by continuing to hate his dad and not being able to get over it. i feel this is what this song is all about. its a kind of weird ending to a cd like this because the thing i was always wondering is what happens to the baby, wonder if he keeps it and raises it or runs away like his parents. i like to think the end of the song is advice his dad is giving him, which ultimately helps him and he keeps the kid. if you look at the story every generation got a little closer to their child they didn't want, so maybe this breaks the running and he finally takes account for his actions. the end with dean talking explains why he is this way, why he bulds walls up and doesn't trust anyone. also kinda why he doesn't know who he is. the town he lives in was filled with rich people who cared about stories rather than who you are. so he held on to this story and defined himself through that instead of trying to get past it. we are all a result of our environment. awesome, i just can't believe ace redid the story like 9 times and came up with this awesome ending. but then again, wonder what the other stories were like, haha...peace out ya'll

yeah, his grandparents lied to him and told him his real parents were his aunt and uncle. (probably a request of the real parents.) throughout the years though he kinda realized who they actually were.

The Early November – Guess What? Lyrics 19 years ago
this song is about when dean has to go live with his real parents since the grandparents died. its supposed to be funny and its supposed to sound the way it does. ace is trying to get across to the listener through lyrics as well as sound just exactly how sarcastic dean feels. the last couple of lines is dean saying to his parents that they cant say they couldn't afford to keep him since deans dad was a lawyer and had money. they basically just were young and didnt wanna deal with having a kid.

The Early November – Never Coming Back Lyrics 19 years ago
this is about when dean's grandparents die, its from the point of view of matt's wife since dean went and stayed with them. its gotta be pretty scary losing the people who brought you into the world, especially when now you have to take responsibility for the son you brought into the world. this song, i feel, is a realization period for the mother. great song.

Eve 6 – Amphetamines Lyrics 19 years ago
this song is not about a breakup with a girl, but a break up with amphetamines, hence the title. this is how i like to look at it. he makes it sound like its about a girl the whole time to make it more relatable to people who dont know how hard it is to get off the addicting drugs. well thats my two cents at least....peace out

O.A.R. – Conquering Fools Lyrics 19 years ago
This is my favorite OAR song. I love it until the end part on this version, it's awesome live but i dont like how they added the last part. I like the message more on Risen. I think this is basically about a dude setting out on a voyage to find himself but he keeps looking in the wrong places (finding gold and jewels) and it makes it worse. Eventually he realizes who he really is and conquers the fools. I love the one verse about people coming and going, its so great cause he says how people dont know whats going on and shit but then again he follows it up by say 'well what the hell its happened to me.' just a great way of looking at both sides before you judge people. i love the way this dude thinks.

Neutral Milk Hotel – The King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1 Lyrics 19 years ago
this song is about incest, sort of. the first verse really isnt that important, its just the imagination of the children. i believe the second verse is very important, however. it is from the point of view of the one step daughter or step son. the fact that they say "your mom," and then just "dad" is my reasoning. the dad and step mom, from the writers point of view, are arguing. the two kids sort of have to deal with this. the next verse presents the kids falling in love. i believe this happens to get over the fighting, to finally bring joy into their lives. the final verse is basically about how the fighting couple know their relationship isnt working out, but for some reason are afraid to end it. maybe because at this point its all they got. or something like that.

Northstar – Taker Not A Giver Lyrics 19 years ago
i think you are wrong. try not to take every word as it is, i think he intended it to be a bit more abstract.
"I was loaded and the hammer was ready. I'm just not that brave..."
i think that means he knows this girl isnt right for him anymore but he is just so used to being with her its hard for him to imagine life without her.
"And there are reasons why I forfeit that nightly mess
Numbing my hands down that evening dress
My daydreams love the violet color of your lips
And the nightmares that accompany it
So take that glare back and put it behind glass
Become part of my history class"

- this is talking about how even though he didn't like it the only thing left in their relationship was the sex. he finally realizes this and trys to get past it, "become part of my history class."
"I don't plan on you tonight so just shut off the lights
Like you wanted to... "
- this is him finally being brave, as he wasnt in the beginning, and saying its over with us. he is being the bigger person because this is always what she wanted but she couldnt stop it either..."like you wanted to."

Broken Social Scene – It's All Gonna Break Lyrics 19 years ago
yes we all say how good the song is, but i find it hard to comprehend what the lyrics are about. sometimes i find it similar to the song "cause=time" on their first cd, which was about priests and their relationship with boys. "i got pastures waiting in the woods...i got buried rumors waiting in the woods." but at the end it seems as if he is talking about a girl. but all in all i think this song is about the catholic religion being fake, through the writer of the songs eyes. the lyric "and you all want the lovely music to save your lives
keep it coming
their is no lie to save your life" makes me think that he isnt exactly talk about lovely music, more or less about people thinking that turning catholic, or maybe all of the sudden believing in god will save your life. he is calling this a lie. i think he uses the term "fucking" in the song very loosely, think of it as "believing." if you look at it like this, this song is not disgusting and you shouldnt feel weird listening to it. just think a little...

i dont think that this song is neccesarily about love....i think its just about him going through a hard time, maybe a break-up, or a death, and its taken a lot of time to get over it but now he has gotten over it and he's on a "cloud" and loves it. he doesnt wanna come down because of the time it took to get over that certain situation.

Jetsabel, that is not true. i went to catholic school all my life and all i realized is how fake the whole religion is, and im pretty sure a lot of people feel the same way. this song is awesome because through each verse he is basically saying the same thing, just through different stories and symbolizims.
