The age-old story of the eternal wanderer. He leaves his small town to find his place in the world and never does, doomed to a fate of bouncing forever from place to place and never finding what he's looking for. Although it is doubtful that he would go back to where he came from, the memories of the place keep him going. |

I thought it was about a destructive, cigarette-like relationship too, but after paying closer attention to the lyrics... it's just about cigarettes! LOL! I love how Ben Lee can make something like this work! |

I don't really understand why people are saying this is their attempt at being 'commercial.' It's not really any more commercial than "Tomorrow," the only difference is "Straight Lines" is much better. |

Such a great song. This could be about success as a bad, but I think it's just about success at life in general. Because this world is just a 'big casino,' with all the chances we take, with all the people we meet, and then how quickly everything can change (for better or for worse) in an instant due to pure luck. |

Asha: Way to miss the point of the song. They are most definately NOT saying that because you believe in God you'll automatically be safe. They are pointing out the opposite and trying to understand why, seeing as the bible often speaks of God as 'protector' etc etc, do such awful things happenn to believers and non-believers a like. They're calling God out when actions don't match words.
-------
No... I got the point of the song, and I'm saying they're wrong. I'm aware that they're saying that "God has a sick sense of humor" because actions don't match words. And I'm saying, it's not God who's the one that should be called out when people do bad things, it's the people who do bad things _themselves_ that need to be called out. Blame THEM, not God, he's not the one who has control over their free will.
p.s. if people truly do believe in God and what he stands for, then they would not be going around messing up people's lives. I am aware there are plenty of people that call themselves "Christians" in name, but don't act the part, which is very sad. I don't mean to sound like I'm dissing agnostics either, because the majority of them I know (as well as the majority of God-fearing individuals) are very good people. I just wish people wouldn't use the argument "bad things happen so there can be no God." |

Yeah, I think he's toast too... I think the roses-on-him parts give it away. Though I think this song would have been better if they saved the "roses off of me" part until the end (and didn't say it at the beginning), because then one would have thought that it was his partner who died, when they find out at the end that really, it was him. (This worked well, of course, in the movie "Sixth Sense" and one of the better books in the Goosebumps series, #10 "The Ghost Next Door".) The only part in question is when he says send me letters from above... but perhaps above means above ground, as he has been lowered into it. |

| Carbon Leaf – What about everything? Lyrics

This is really a call to find beauty in the small things. The words that they use, such as "Holiday quiet on these streets, except for some stubborn leaves That didn't fall with the fall, and now they clatter in vain Holiday sky, midnight clear, wind is high, hard to steer Old muffler rumbles like an old fighter plane" - you'd see that scene in real life and just think it's ordinary, but my gosh, the words they use make it look like it's straight out of a zillion dollar painting.
And then it goes way beyond that, beyond mere physical descriptions, to love, aging, terrorism, loss, and the emotions involved.
Intimate moments are all around you, all you have to do is realize they're there. |

not sure what this is about, but yeah that would make very good sense. I love these two lines:
just let the red rain splash you
let the rain fall on your skin
Going off of that --he could be saying, when you get overcome with your emotions, don't fight them, just let them happen. |

It just hit me the other day what a dark song this is. The dude in the song works as a cashier at a strip club/brothel, and he's trying to find love. Not what I'd expect from a song called "Walk in the Sun," haha. Bruce Hornsby is very good at this, disguising dark lyrics/stories in upbeat tunes. |

all I can do is shake my head at this song & some of you people's comments... Sorry, Depeche Mode has made some great music but they're so wrong here. Do you really think that just because you believe in God (or whatever other name you want to call your higher power), you'll automatically be safe from all harm?
Sorry, it's sad but true that there are morons in this world that go around messing other people's lives up. These are the ones that don't believe in God and everyone else suffers for it. Blame them, not God. |

Surface meaning = he's imagining that his g/f is cheating on him with another man, though there's nothing to insinuate that he has reason to be worried. (Note the line "and it's all in my head")
Deeper meaning = It's about the irrational fears that all of us have. |

| R.E.M. – Aftermath Lyrics

I'm fairly certain that this song is telling the listener to vote for John Kerry (or rather, "anyone but Bush"). As you know REM is very anti-Bush, and they made it a point to rush-release this CD before the election -- Stipe is quoted that he "wouldn't have it any other way." Also, this single was released not too long before Nov. 2.
"In a universe where you see the worst and it's up to you to fix it" -- there are liberal extremists that thought that another Bush victory would have spelled out doom for the world, and this line can totally be interpreted about that. This is sort of the same thing at the end when he repeats "how you've worked it out and you see it all."
The "what's it all about crowd" (which includes me, lol) are those who don't have much of an opinion on who won the presidential election, or politics in general.
The lines about how "he's not coming back" is about losing a soldier probably in Iraq. And "when London falls" was an eerily true prediction about the terrorists attacking London due to their support on the war in Iraq. |

sumowrestler & theCellists are right... I'm kind of surprised that it took that many replies to see how they are connected actually.
Some people's dreams are things we take for granted.
The American Pie edit changes only the first two lines but totally obliterates the meaning of this song. It's too bad that's the one that got played on the radio mostly; most people could learn a lot from this. |

This is probably the most brilliant song I've ever heard & that's saying something. It's about how everyone's kind of the star of their own movie -- but you don't need to be on the silver screen to be important or relevant. Heck, some people that are on the silver screens aren't even important or relevant & feel that way so that's why they do things like hang themselves on the shower rod. If you're satisfied with yourself, that's all that matters, and you can "take a bow." |

All those people who say this is about LA people being superficial are totally right. This song is right, too, and that's why I love this song so much. But I also like LA for that reason. See, almost everyone (including me) is whack, and I'd much rather live in a place where people are superficial and appear to be happy, to hide their true self-deprecating tendencies (i.e. LA), rather than somewhere where people are still just as messed up and self-deprecating, but they don't hide it & furthermore are rude about it (i.e. the east coast.) |
