Nine Inch Nails – Beside You in Time Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is in no way political or philosophical. Beside You In Time is someone's song to his/her lost loved one. It centers around an attempt to reach this person somehow. During the song, they have a brief encounter.

From the start, the subject feels this person's presence, evidenced by "Places parallel I know it's you". Later we learn the subject is either on the verge of ending his/her life or attempting to leave a place in hopes of reaching their lost loved one, evidenced by "Now that I've decided not to stay / I can feel me start to fade away" At around 2:37 the subject finally leaves, but is lost and can't find his/her way. That is until around 3:07 when he/she starts becoming closer and closer (this part has a very magnetic sound, in a sense, and serves as a perfect build-up). At 3:40 finally sees the person and/or they meet again (this part sounds infinitely intense to represent the flood of emotions the subject is experiencing) At 4:15 they begin communicating again, finally, and the subject gets a reassurance that they'll meet again, thus the ending phrase "beside you in time". The last few lines of this song are extraordinarily comforting to the subject. Happy with this comfort, the subject separates from his loved one again (at 4:45), knowing he/she will see them again and will be beside them in time. In the remainder of the song, the subject willfully comes down, peaceful and happy.

Tori Amos – Caught A Lite Sneeze Lyrics 19 years ago
it has nothing to do with god you morons.

it's about her relationship with trent reznor. in a live version she made a direct reference to "hurt":

"you said 'i hurt myself today'
you never did
you never could
you're full of shit
you never did you never could (fuck!)"

and no, "Pretty Hate Machine" was not a reference to women either.

"Didn't know our love was so small." carries double meaning, as she seemed to have also been referring to his penis size.

just to clear things up.

very nice cathartic. also, now that that we've established the meaning (anti-bush/war), i'd like to state that this song is much better live. i believe he played it after "hurt", which was surprising, but i remember it being full of energy and well, i guess the best way to put it would be : fun.

Those of you who think Johnny Cash's version is better should really go to a NIN concert. I do think it's a great cover, but nothing like seeing this song live, performed by Trent. This was the 3rd to last song on a setlist of about 23 songs on March 24th in Austin. It'd be difficult to describe what it was like. Chills just ran through my body during the chorus when the croud sang along. It really was one of the most amazing/inspiring moments of my life.

haha i don't think trent would ever dare pay tribute to smashing pumpkins. in the starfuckers inc. music video, you see trent throwing a baseball at a billy corgan doll type thing, as well as one of himself. but he also breaks plates with fred durst, marolyn manson (who is dressed up as a woman in the video riding with trent in a limosine), and a few other people i can't remember. if i'm not mistaken, trent doesnt like billy corgan because of comments billy made in rolling stone magazine about the state of rock music. i don't think they've had a war of words or anything but still...i doubt trent would pay tribute to billy corgan out of all people. i actually really liked smashing pumpkins. the're one of those bands i wish were still together.

I saw a lengthy interview with Trent. You can find it somewhere on mtv.com. He states at the end of the interview that this song in particular is about his (drug or alcohol) addiction. So I'll retract my previous analysis and go with the addiction idea. Makes sense if you think about it. Especially the part where he whispers "I cannot go through this again".

One of the best instrumentals I've ever heard. The bass, guitar, and keyboard blend together very nicely. If you go to http://nin.com/visuals/ and scroll down a bit, you can see them rehearse this song. You can get a feel for how smoothly Trent runs things. I wouldn't be surprised if this song hasn't already been used in a movie soundtrack.

Nine Inch Nails – All the Love in the World Lyrics 20 years ago
I'm leaning towards the relationship idea. Although the God idea would make some sense because this album is a bit politically motivated and God/religion would tie into that, but there is one line that makes me think the "you" he's referring to is another person, not God: "Colors all are brighter when you're near" I don't see how the "you" would be God. That line seems to fit more with the relationship idea; about how it seems things are better when that other person is around.

I think the first couple of verses are about how when he's in a crowd or with a lot of people, he feels alone, maybe because he doesn't like to see them happy while he feels lonely/miserable. He considers these people to be drones who go about their lives without giving as much care to the world as he does, thus the "insects march along" line. He is frustrated that nobody has listened to him so far, through his music or not.

The only lines I'm having trouble with are: "It looks as though the past is here to stay, I've become a million miles away" His allusion to Hurt here is what confuses me because in Hurt, a million miles away was where he would be if he had another chance at life, that he would not fuck up his life with addiction this time. So if he has "become a million miles away", then he has given himself a second chance at a clean life. However, that would not make any sense with the rest of the song. So I'm getting the feeling that line was a coincidence and is exclusive of Hurt. So I looked around a bit and the term "million miles away" is referenced in a lot of heartbreak and love lost type of songs, often times signifying that the other person has become unreachable. This would definitely tie in with the song as the previous line, "It looks as though the past is here to stay" could mean that he's had trouble with distancing himself in the past, and now he's done it again.

Whether the "you" he's referring to is God or a human being, this song is ultimately about loneliness, and I'm pretty sure it's the loneliness one feels after a breakup, and the jealousy one feels when seeing that other person receive attention/love while you are suffering. Trent wouldn't just throw in an allusion to "Heartbreak Hotel" without a reason.

Glad to see you're coming out of the negativity a bit, Fluid. You were really dogging on THTF. But I guess that's understandable because it doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the album (at least in my opinion). THTF gets old quick, unlike the other songs on this album.

This album wasn't what I was expecting either, mainly because part of what I've loved about NIN in the past is the dark guitar riffs. In this album they seem a bit flat, and sometimes non-existent. However, I'm still impressed with the album as a whole, about 7 of the songs I really enjoy. I really try not to expect too much out of musicians, although I, like many people hold Trent to high standards, probably too high. I wish I could let it go. What makes me grateful of Trent though is the fact that music in general seems to have gone to shit lately, and Trent realizes this and wants to put out what HE thinks is good music. I wished other musicians would do the same instead of putting out what they think the average idiot wants to hear. Or maybe they're not smart enough to know what they're putting out is dry, mindless bullshit. I'm referring to rap and hip-hop here.

Great lyrics. I don\'t care for the sound too much. Especially the chorus when he says \"With-a teeth-a\". Just bothers me and as hard as I try I\'m coming to like it.

Song seems to be about how in relationships we are thrilled at the beginning, and we feel that person almost completes us (or makes us feel better, whatever cliche saying you want to choose for the situation). But then we realize that this person is controlling us and making us more like them, seen in the \"line begins to blur\" line. But what makes it hard to leave is the sex, or perhaps the emotional attachment that having sex can bring on. He seems to say at the end that this has happened before but this time he won\'t put up with it anymore.

An improvement over THTF indeed. This song fits nicely with the album theme, unlike THTF. I also love the dark sounds in this song, they may very well be used in a soundtrack over the next few years. This is probably my 3rd favorite on the album, behind Right Where It Belongs and All the Love in the World.

And Phooky, Fluid probably didn\'t mean to post that many times. It\'s kind of a glitch. It has happened to me before.

Fun song, although I\'m not 100% sure it\'s about sex (or a girl). I read and listened to the song a few times. It seems to be about him not wanting to let things in the past that haunted him before come back to him. It also seems to be about regret. Could be about a girl as the chorus implies but you never know.

Things about this song that I love: the guitar sounds great and works well with the lyrics. Also I love the way he says \"I have to apologize\" This song gets better every time I listen to it.

Nine Inch Nails – Right Where It Belongs Lyrics 21 years ago
Absolutely beautiful song and a great ending to the album. I hope FluidDelusions listens to this song so he can stop hating on Trent already.

The song to me, seems like it\'s about reflection, and about striving to be more than you already are. He seems to be wanting to influence people to seek knowledge for the sake of this world, and to stop convincing themselves that they know everything already and that they are flawless. My reasoning on that comes from these lyrics:

\"See the animal in his cage that you built,
Are you sure what side you\'re on?
Better not look him too closely in the eye,
Are you sure what side of the glass you are on?\"

Here he seems to be saying some people are quick to call people monsters/animals, when in all actuality they could really be the monsters/animals.

One thing I noticed about this album is that he\'s said \"Right where it belongs\" or \"Right where they belong\" quite a few times. Kind of like in his previous work he used to say \"Nothing can stop me now\" which I believe he says once in this album. Interesting stuff.

Anyway, this song seems on the whole to be saying, \"How can you be so sure?\" Once again, brilliant and beautiful song, I\'d recommend it to anyone. I can\'t wait until May 3rd so I can actually buy this album.

I can\'t stand the \"Flip Flop\" line either. Besides that, it\'s not bad at all. It sounds political. Seems to document his loss of faith in the political system in America. Not my favorite song on the album because it doesn\'t seem to fit, along with THTF but that\'s how it goes sometimes I guess.

Nine Inch Nails – Only Lyrics 21 years ago
Ok, I think there are hints in this song. In Down in it, he said this:

\"Just then a tiny little dot caught my eye it was just about too small to see. But i watched it way too long and that dot was pulling me down.\"

which I always took to mean, that he got himself into something that ended up being a big mistake.

Now in this song he put...

\"Well the tiniest little dot caught my eye
And it turned out to be a scab\"

which I take to mean pretty much the same thing, just that for awhile, the problem was healing. Later on in the song he says...

\"I just couldn\'t leave it alone
I kept picking at the scab
It was a doorway trying to seal itself shut
But I climbed through\"

which of course, means he went back to the same mistakes that got him into trouble the first time. Before all of this though he seems to be talking mostly about his dangerous lines of thinking, his loneliness, and his delusion, which created a circumstance that led him to become vulnerable to the troubles he encountered (perhaps addiction).

The only thing I could derive out of the lyrics \"I just made you up to hurt myself. And it worked...yes it did\" was that perhaps he was telling himself he was lonely and unhappy so he could have an excuse to digress into the trouble he got himself into. I\'m not sure about that one because it\'s a bit confusing.

The song on the whole seems to be telling a story about how he fell into something that only ended up hurting him, and he pushed people away to have it. But in the end he had a huge struggle to push away the part of him that led him into this rut in the first place.

As far as the sound: It almost sounds disco-like, and there is very little rhyming but it still sounds fun. This song grew on me like some of the others in this album.

It\'s hard for me to interpret the meaning too. At first I thought he\'s expressing anger for someone who he doesn\'t like, but gets more recognition/attention than him. Then I noticed a few allusions. One to \"Hurt\", with the line...

\"I\'ve become a million miles away\"

which might be hinting at the fact that he\'s over his addiction. But really I\'m not sure on that. It could very well mean something entirely different because the lines before are describing a neglected person.

The other allusion I noticed was to Elvis\'s song \"Heartbreak Hotel\" with the line...

\"Sometimes I get so lonely I could...(die)\"

Which lead me to believe the person that the one-line chorus is about is someone he used to be with.

Regardless, it\'s a great opening to the album, and it took a few listens before I really started liking it. I love how it really picks up at the 3:00 mark or so. Gets louder etc.

Fluid, I downloaded what I thought was the song, instead it was a shitty low quality radio mix version, probably the same one you heard. I just heard it on the radio though, it was crystal clear. I liked it, although there are plenty of NIN songs that I prefer over this one.

Instead of saying this is a bad song, you can say "I don't like this song". When you say things like "If you liked 'Deep' then fuck you", you deduct from your argument a bit, because you're failing to take in account the fact that musical preference is entirely subjective. I hate rap and I hate hip-hop. I also hate Ashlee Simpson, but I'm not going to be pissed at someone if they like her or her music. Just, I can't relate to their musical preferences.

As far as politics in songs go, I was a bit disappointed with Green Day's "American Idiot" because of the fact that they were so overt with their message. I don't feel Trent's song to be as overt, but I had a feeling back in November that there would be a song about politics because on the NIN.com site there's a journal entry about the subject matter the day after the election. You can talk all you want about how making songs about politics is going down a notch, but ultimately, like someone else said, music is about expression. I'd expect Trent to make songs that are relevant to things in his own life and things he thinks about. He was once addicted to heroin, he wrote "Hurt", a brilliant song. He's pissed about the election outcome, he wrote "The Hand That Feeds". It makes sense.

As far as the rhyming goes, there are only 5 lines in the song that rhyme with "bee", like you mentioned. And those 5 happen to be in the chorus, then 2 more at the end, not the whole song though. I don't feel the song is poorly written, even by Trent's standards. But he's written better songs, notably Closer and Hurt.

The sound. I was a bit disappointed in the sound too, it just seemed a bit too simple. I felt there could have been things that made it better, notably the guitar riffs (and yes they do sound quite similar to The Kink's song). Other than that, I really liked the keyboard sounds after the second chorus, although they almost sounded too techno-like.

I put this song on my playlist, because overall I liked it and to me, it's fairly pleasant. Bash this song all you want, but don't generalize it to the entire album when you haven't heard it yet. I doubt that Trent has gotten worse as an artist, it doesn't seem to consist with his history. This song is not exceptional, but I don't think that means he's lost a step by any means.

Sorry about not commenting on the meaning of the song, but I felt that had already been established by others, and besides, it's obvious what the song is about.

Toadies – Tyler Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is called Tyler because Tyler, Texas was where the lead singer had spent time as a child and I believe he may still spend some time there but I don't know. He now belongs to the band Burden Brothers, who he says will be together for the long run.
Anyway Tyler is a great song, what I love is that the guitar and drums at the beginning sound so perfect together, and this song is a musical masterpiece in my opinion.

I love this CD, it has an upbeat tempo to it, unlike some of the previous RHCP albums. I laughed hard when huebert said something about System of a Down being better than RHCP. I wish I had more hands so I could give that comment 4 thumbs down. I'd also like to add that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are the greatest band of my era (I'm 20 yrs old so my era might be different from yours). One could argue that maybe Green Day or The Offspring is a distant second, but they still haven't had near the number of great songs as RHCP.

Nine Inch Nails – Starfuckers, Inc. Lyrics 21 years ago
I think this song was written about Marilyn Manson, and at some point Marilyn and Trent had reconciled, and Marilyn was cool with the song. But I definitely agree with some of the ideas expressed here.

On a side note: I'm not sure how many of you know this but if anyone has the live dvd set "Nine Inch Nails: And All That Could Have Been", you can skip forward to the the song Head Like a Hole and at exactly the 11:20 mark press 7 on your DVD remote. You will be taken to a secret menu that has a live version of Starfuckers Inc. in NYC in which Marilyn Manson appears near the end as the crowd cheers, and right after the song ends, Marilyn plays "Beautiful People".

Nine Inch Nails – Hurt Lyrics 21 years ago
First of all, this song is about heroin/drug addiction. Trent has said so publicly. It is not about self-mutilation. Johnny Cash wanted to do a cover because he himself has struggled with addiction. Also, somebody made a comment about Cash's video possibly being anti-christian. He is actually openly Christian.
Secondly, another person made a comment about Trent Reznor not putting much emotion into the song. You should watch this song in the live dvd set "Nine Inch Nails: And All That Could Have Been". There is plenty of emotion in Trent's way of singing it and the amount of emotion it draws from the crowd is quite a sight to see. In my opinion this song's lyrics are infinitely powerful, and both versions are great. Both Johnny Cash and Trent Reznor are legends in their own ways and this song can hopefully serve as a reminder as to the self-destruction one goes through when they are addicted.

Franz Ferdinand – Take Me Out Lyrics 21 years ago
Chef Groovy, you are right. Franz Ferdinand was shot while riding in a car with his wife. He was quoted as saying "Sophie dear, Sophie dear, don't die! Stay alive for our children!" and his final words were "It is nothing."

If you look back up to what boss 2k said though, he did not say that Franz was standing up saying "Take me out", but rather that the lyric describes his emotion as he and his wife were being murdered.

But that aside, this is a spectacular song with a great beat even though the lyrics are somewhat depressing, and I definitely see the similarities to this song and Float On by Modest Mouse. Another song, Time is Running Out by Muse also carries a similar tune, and in my opinion these 3 songs were the greatest in Rock this year.
