the "state of emergency" is, i think, a sort of mania, but the good kind of mania. meaning, in said state, she is free of the stress and anxiety exerted in her emotional conflict. we all know the feeling of relief, and i think that she is saying that she is relieved, but to such an extent that she reaches a place where she is overloaded with creativity, with the need to do things, or to think, or to make music. it might even take her to a level of heightened spirituality, or human understanding, or just like, figuring out the meaning of life. or something. one dictionary defines a state of emergency as "a condition of urgent need for action." the common connotation of this definition is negative, as though it is a bad thing to urgently need to take action. but Bjork seems to have come up with her own interpretation of this and sees that need for action to be a good thing. that need motivates her to do the things i mentioned above, whether it be to create things, or maybe to take action in her life - to pull herself together, make a necessary change, whatever. or, you know, again... discover the meaning of life. as for the "emotional landscapes" verse, it is clear that she is pushed to this state because her friend helped her clear up her confusion over an "emotional landscape." if one is interpreting this as a song for a lover, that "landscape" could be something along the lines of "are we in love?" or "how do i feel about you?" or whatever you want it to be. but as a song for a friend, i think it means that her "emotional landscapes" are really just about anything concerning emotion, but not about an emotional conflict/landscape with the friend. so, she goes to the friend to talk out the situation, and since really only your best friend knows you well enough to solve the riddle, she gets that solution. alternatively, maybe Bjork meant to use a different word than emergency, and it was lost in translation from icelandic? the last 25 minutes i've spent interpreting this have strangely had a huge impact on my way of thinking. not only does Bjork make the usually negative "emergency" into a positive ideal (thanks for the optimism, girl), but the "state of emergency" that i have interpreted seems like such an incredible place to be. for example, after my two tests today and a third one on friday that have been paired with quite a lot of stress and anxiety, i may jut reach that state of emergency. i may draw, or write music, or volunteer at a homeless shelter, or, if i'm lucky, figure out the meaning of life! discovering Bjork's ideal of emergency will, i think, change my routine of sleeping-for-5-days-after-final-exams to that state of relief, of appreciation, and inspire me to do the things i love - like create. thoughts? |

| Guster – Come Downstairs And Say Hello Lyrics | 20 years ago |

"I think the reason they include the Wizard of Oz / Dark Side of the Moon thing is because regardless of whether that notorious urban myth is true or not, listening to both at the same time is something bored stoners/teenagers/young adults do!" i could agree, because this is what i do when i'm stoned. i think that the wizard of oz is just a cool motif they use in a song about depression. it is something of a cult classic so that would make sense. perhaps something about getting lost in a fantasy? I can relate to this song because I am depressed and I think that thing song describes depression perfectly. Often if I have a good night, after just hanging out with my friends or partying or something, I feel very inspired to get rid of the depression and have fun all the time. Then I will go to bed and wake up and feel shitty all over again. I think the narrator of the song is well aware of this pattern, and right now is in a more manic, inspired state. The song is really just an example of how powerless a person feels when they are depressed and can't get out of the funk (if it is clinical). |

| Del Amitri – Roll To Me Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| this song is so old school, i love it. i never knew that they were saying "roll to me." in fact i didn't even try to figure it out because i was about 0 years old when it was big. however, i can still laugh at the band name. WHAT KIND OF NAME IS "DEL AMITRI?!" | |

yes it was though the tori cover is also most lovely.I just love this song and think she covers it most well as with all her covers.I think the story behind leonard writing it is so sad. rash what story are you referring to? just like cooling, my favorite of tori's song are the most mysterious. but i'd still like to know what they mean! |

| Tori Amos – Leather Lyrics | 20 years ago |

Oh god could it be the weather Oh god why am I here If love isn't forever And its not the weather Hand me my leather I think this verse emphasizes how a lot of people turn to the weather either for a measure of how their day is going to go, or they just "blame it on the weather," like if it is raining, it is an excuse to feel crappy or just take a nap. It is sort of a cop-out way of dealing with things, and I think Tori is saying that she relies on the weather to explain her thoughts instead of her own "Crazy" thoughts. |

| Marcy Playground – Sex And Candy Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Yesterday I was swimming and reminscing about being little and all the fun my sisters and I would have in the pool during the summertime. For awhile there I just really wanted to be little again. Then I thought of this song, or at least the title. I don't know if the lyrics fit in, but "Sex and Candy" reminds me of a teenager's struggle between growing up (sex) and wanting to stay little (candy). | |
