| i dont think he is comparing women problems that are keeping him awake. i take it to be something different only because i kinda feel this way sometimes. i think he's talking about everyone and although we try to be pleasant to each other on the outside or at least he does, i think he is really just like hateful or has this intense hate/meaness towards people probably because people are ugly in general/predictable/boring/hateful/ it can go on and on with the things that can really annoy people. i dont know. to me personally i really find myself hating or disliking almost everyone. a lot of me just doesnt care and its because i feel people are useless to me and its sad and i feel bad about that and i feel lonely in my place in the world. maybe thats what he means when he says "let you go to sleep, feeling bad as me" sometimes people care so much that it just hurts when nothing changes and no one seems to care themselves. no one notices and its annoying. like a fly. | |

i think this song is really good and doesnt get enough credit. the way i took this song is a bit different from all of you. the first verse i think is isaac having to blame someone else for the way things are. and i think whoever brought that tetons thing up about the tribe losing hope and now it was leading us to where we are today with the first marketing era etc ect. i think isaac blames the tetons as a joke but also how everyone seems to blame something or someone for their problems even if they really dont even exist. i think that first verse talking about the dog and how he wouldda let her bite you has all to do with isaac just being a normal guy, even though so many people think he's so amazing cause of his lyrics and so many people who listen to them or people in general who are so absorbed into everything that they try to be something they are not. its kinda hard to explain its not one of those things you explain its just there and the fact isaac can explain it through song makes it better. the 2nd verse i think now has to do with "us" the amerian working class, the people who seem to have all these problems. "Oh we mumble loudly, Wear our shame so proudly. Wore our blank expressions, Trying to look interesting. Blame it all on me cuz " that whole thing is pretty much explanatory if you can see how people try so hard to pretend. its like people who are trying to get attention or want people to notice their cries for help. mumbling loudly? (trying to be vague on purpose) wear our shame so proudly? (again, trying to be so open with our problems for attention) wore our blank expressions, trying to look interesting? (basically people trying to be actors in making others believe they have these problems, when really they just wan to get noticed cause they are insecure). so that sums up how people look for scape goats. what isaac explains is how all that, all of those people, thats all from influences and the modern world around us, music, movies, whatever, thats what makes people do all those things. the ironic part is isaac notices this but him to decides the scape goat or problem with this is to blame it on the tetons. he's blaming it on the tetons. people dont even know waht the fuck a teton is so thats what makes it that much better to listen to. its more of his perspective. its all evolution. the third verse is good. it explains more about the 2nd. "All them eager actors Gladly taking credit for the lines created By the people tucked away from sight Is just a window from the room we're bound to. If you find a way out, oh would you just let me know how? Would you just let me know how?" all them eager actors (us, people) glady taking credit for lines created (thats people pretending to be depressed or sad, happy, whatever, just taking peoples lines and feelings from songs cause they dont know how to feel themselves) by the people tucked away from sight? (thats the people they dont know or see, musicians, whoever really, seems easier to pretend that way) is just a window bound to the room were in? thats pretty much people trapped in themselves not really knowing what to do. if you find a way out please let me know how?? that explains that, like people still depending on someone else to do things for them. like people dont know how to feel they pretend, so they just pretend based on whats around them, everyday influences, so they make up scapegoats and isaac, his scape goat for all of that is tetons. ha its funny in a way but probably true. the 4th verse "Blame it on the web But the spider's your problem now. Language is for liquid That we're all dissolved in. Great for solving problems After it creates a problem. Blame it on the Tetons, God I need a scapegoat now. " blame it on the web but the spiders your problem now, thats pretty much about still being in your room, nothing there really, just waiting around, trying to have some sort of excuse for something. just making up problems. thats what this verse goes into, making up problems and how people do it more and more cause we're just such a emotionally opressed society nowadays. language is for liquid, that we're all disolved in, great for solving problems after it creates a problem. basically we just bite on each others words so much and think theres problems and really the problem probably is we talk too much about bullshit and then when we figure out the bullshit we seem to have solved the problem that really created out of nowhere. just a bunch of people trying to hard and pretending somethigns there when nothing is there. if you want to think about it another way, not really having to do with the verse but sorta with the vague idea of it, well, you know those people that cant be quiet without having to say something just because they just cant deal with silence? they just make up crap. its like that in a way. except people do it to the point we have all these emotions involved with love, sadness, happiness, despair, etc, its on and on. but i like how he keeps saying "Blame it on the tetons, god i need a cold one now" like this is isaac now speaking about isaac saying how he see's this, he's kinda like "ughh its lame" and he's blaming the tetons for all of soceities problems, isaac is like the outsider guys looking into the world and really just having to figure it all out and just watching. so he needs a cold one. hah. we all need a cold one when we get fed up and just like through with things. and the last verse is pretty great and probably the good conclusion to it. "Everyone's a building burning With no one to put the fire out. Standing at the window looking out, Waiting for time to burn us down. Everyone's and ocean drowning With no one really to show how. They might get a litle better If they turned themselves into a cloud." everyones a building burning, with no one to put the fire out. basically you can get the idea. everyones just burning and no one cares really. so it seems. so they think. they being (us) people with all these horrible problems and the people who really think the world is so fucked up this and that not knowing that because these people all think these things they too are just apart of the problem. its clever as hell. standing out the window looking out, waiting for time to burn us down. thats pretty much explaing the first few lines in this verse, people just not caring, burning down, waiting for something and its really just time. they're just sinking lower and lower for no reason really but they seem to have a reason. the reason is probably rooted down to... thast right, the tetons. if the native american tribe thing is what isaac is really referring to cause it would just make that much more sense. everyones an ocean drowning, with noone to show how, they might get a little better, if they turned into a cloud. yea thats pretty great to end it. basically water evaporates and turns into the sky and clouds, but you know, water cant stay in the sky too long, it comes back down, so its like a process, its recycling and its a big circle loop. people sinking believe into society, hating themselves and society, pretending, being eager actors, listening to the influences around them more then themselves, not really having their own thought idea. blaming each other, looking for scapegoats, even you kids or adults reading these song meanings, looking to feel like isaac is preaching and is smarter, looking to him for a scapegoat and isaac knows this, isaac seems to look at the world and everything around it, and as the outsider in the ironic way he too has his scapegoat since he's fed up with peoples silly behaviour..... blame it on the tetons. haha this song at the end makes me smile and chuckle almost cause it is pretty ridiculous how far we've come as a society and the ridiculous things people seem to be doing and behaving in. the cloud thing at the end of the song can also be meant that people would be better off tkaing another form (maybe dying) but just like clouds and the rain falling down from them, and people dying and being born again, its all a loop, a circle. but maybe im looking into that too deep but thats pretty much how i look at the song. now, lets hear your ideas.... |

| sometimes when you take heroin or a needle drug you get a warm sensation all over your body. its the good rush you get from it all after injection. usually you dont stay awake for very long and you tend to pass out. you may close your eyse as its happening. well i think the words "night on the sun" can prove it a bit. think about it. you've just had a fix or whatever and you're about to go to sleep or youre passing out but you feel incredibly warm all over. i think the sounds of the music make it sound like a trip as well. i mean the lyrics and the sounds behind that make it seem like he's just starting to take the drug or whatever and then the long guitar strings that last a few minutes towards the end really get that feeling like youre dazed going. like you're enjoying your high. maybe thats why so many drug users can say songs sound better on drugs cause maybe they were originally wrote or played on drugs. but wether its he was on a drug during this or not i dont think he couldve possible wrote the song and played it on any sort of needle drunk and still keep it musically sensible and lyrically sensible. i think your mind would drift and forget. remeber he had to have wrote it first, then recorded it, meaning to play it back. so he is musically gifted for sure, and lyrically gifted, wether he really does all he says he does, who knows, maybe he's done drugs then writes about them when he's more sober. i remeber reading he said he did a lot of drugs on the goodnews for people who love bad news interview he had with some magazine and that he definitely felt like it was a bad choice cause he has some fried brain cells now he's sure, but i dont think he's at all that messed up but a lot of his songs can be interpretted with drug use. i think this is one of them for some parts. but im sure he's got other parts of his "life" theories and what not in here too. | |

| its a pretty simple song and you can determine the lyrics pretty well through the tone of the song how its a bit slow and dark then gets enlightening and brighter. he knows what he's saying is a wake up call to people to remeber to live life. to not forget theres a purpose here far greater than society may have influenced. but the great thing about it is the fact that after he reaches the middle of the song, the brightened part he reminds you through the tone again that your life isnt that and you have forgotten. go back to your boring life. he leaves you thinking like "what the fuck am i doing with myself?" which i think shows he really does care about everyone as a whole wether he shows it or not. cause i know i do care abotu everyone on earth but at the same time pretty much dislike them all as well. it shows in other songs like "Life like weeds" the lyric "i wish i could have told you all that i love you". he's afraid. great song | |

| i think the tone of the song sounds pretty peaceful and soothing. sorta like "dont worry everything is fine". i sorta get a romantic vibe from this. a companionship and being with someone enjoying life and becoming apart of it. i mean when youre in love you can feel things and describe them in lovely ways and metaphors. i think maybe the lyrics "heart stopped pumping but my blood is still alive" can mean that he feels excited and the lyric "my eyes wake up but my brain is sleeping fine" can mean he's awake but feels like he's dreaming. i definitely take the "the rain hits the ground and the trees they dry it up" lyric to show how things are connected just like you could be with your "mate" if you will. your companion. the lyric "one more thing for you and i to do before we shut our eyes" i think shows how he is talking about himself and someone else and how they may be preparing to die but together which would be ok cause they would just be apart of everything itself. (maybe im off base with that but then again we can all be off base with everything). the lyrics "you blame me and ill blame you and we're both right" can mean that theres an equal scale between two. that we're both right cause noone is more or less of anything than the other. and i agree about the "cutting cat faces in the pine" how that can be symbolic for cutting hearts and i think that shows what two may do, young couples to be romantic. cut a heart in the tree together, maybe put their intials in the middle. im sure you know what im talking about. but then i think it shifts, i think their is a darker meaning maybe, that at this point the next lyric makes me wonder. "chain hits the wood and the wood it turns to dust, i picture you as if you were a pine". i think maybe it shows that a relationship when sour somewhere and now he's angry. he wants that person to disappear and turn to dust. then the lyric "heart stopped pumping blood is still alive" can now mean something different that maybe he's enraged, heartbroken but angry at the same time. then how "we're wood screws" can mean what was mentioned before that our lives are unstable and things are never what they may seem. can change at any moment. things can just go bad. then towards the end i feel he is just dying and getting ready to die. "lay down with the southern range" he's laying down, "swallows drop in" he's swallowing, maybe getting ready. probably remebering things at this time. maybe being happy and how he was happy. thinking about looking at the horizon with a past companion, being happy. referring back to the "cutting cat faces in the pine" making hearts in the trees. "mark the path back back to departure" can maybe say what he's doing. he's remebering everything and getting ready to leave. (to die maybe). "the pies lay down and i lay down with the southern range" can now mean that he's dead and he has became one with the earth and is now connected with it all. that his life is now apart of all life (rain hits the ground and the trees dry it up) and he had some memorable things worth living for like love maybe. i can be off but thats what i got from this song and thats what i got from the music too. towards the end of the song you get a sense of death with the repetetion of the "i lay down with the southern range" and how it drifts away slowly that he's slowly dying. music plays a good theme in meaning of the song. anyways. thats my view on it. | |
