I'd say so. Some definite sexual connotations in here - to be honest, I thought it was about happy-go-lucky prostitution with an Asian female caricature. Obviously, a terrible interpretation.
Then again, I always thought they said "Michigan" instead of "Nishigesh" - kind of makes it less exotic-sounding. |

So basically, the first part = hubris? In more words than probably necessary, the decadence of civilization.
The second part = violent change/reform? "Surf's up" seems to imply erosion and metamorphosis. Aud Lang Syne, of course, symbolizing the end of an era.
The third part = the answer: Wilson's obsession with regression - songs about childhood as catharsis/longing/nostalgia. The bike horns in "You Still Believe in Me". The whistles and noisemakers in "Heroes & Villains", "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow", etc. The sing-songiness of "On a Holiday" and "Sloop John B", etc. etc. |

Produced in 1966, it was played during a montage in Boogie Nights (at a point where it was 1982 or so). Who cares if it was 15 years off? Songs this great can fit anywhere. |

One of the best songs on "Surf's Up" - and it's no coincidence that it's paired off with one of the worst ("Student Demonstration Time") - perhaps Bruce Johnston's lyric "Oh reality, it's not for me / And it makes me laugh" says it all. He weaves a complete fabrication, an America that never actually existed. Extending that, his descriptions of the "girl I found" in the later passages are layered with meta-messages; you're not inclined to believe any of it. Bruce is perhaps the most deceptive of all the Beach Boys. "Student Demonstration Time", meanwhile, instead of providing a sharp counterpoint, reaffirms (in much coarser form) the apprehensive nature of early 70s America. |

After churning out close to 20 albums in ten years, describing the entire relationship cycle in Pet Sounds, as well as the story of America and the universe in Smile, replete with rich vocal harmonies and orchestral textures, it seems that Brian Wilson was pretty fatigued by this point in time. "Busy Doing Nothing" is one of his autobiographical playlets, along with other underappreciated gems like "I Went to Sleep" and "Time to Get Alone" - spare instrumentation and nuanced rhythms as he describes the more mundane aspects of life. It's got a great bossa nova beat and complex chord progressions, as well as directions to his Bel Air estate. |

Carl wrote the song, and their manager at the time, Terry Rieley, wrote the lyrics. The lyrics are pretty dense, and seem to aim unrealistically towards the Smile epics (Heroes & Villains, Surf's Up), but pretty nice alliteration. And probably one of the more kick-ass flute solos in rock. |
