| T. Rex – Cosmic Dancer Lyrics
|
This is one of my favorite T.Rex songs. It is definately not about the car accident thing. Marc died in a car accident while his wife was driving but she survived. I don't think his kid was in the car and Rolan Bolan is very much alive.
The mood of the song is so strange and the idea of dancing from the womb to the tomb is perfect Bolan. That carefree perfect expression in dancing.
The Cosmic Dancer is Shiva from the Hindu religion, representing the act of creation and destruction so I am guessing that this song is about Bolan as an artist or poet, a sort of song about destiny. I know he used to call himself the Bolan Child and thought he was destined to become something big. |

Based on John Steinbeck's novel Grapes of Wrath. Tom is the title character in the novel that deals with a family during the dust bowl. John Steinbeck praised Woody's verse and writing and saw him as the voice of the common man and the America underclass. |

| Woody Guthrie – The Grand Coulee Dam Lyrics

I believe this song was commissioned to be written by the US government for inclusion in some documentry they wanted Woody to narrate. He wrote this one for the film.
The dam itself was a plan that came out of the New Deal that tried to get the US back on its feet after the depression. |

| Woody Guthrie – Jesus Christ Lyrics

Updating the story of Jesus and putting him in the role of the outlaw. Socialist ideas pervade the song and Woody is commenting on the current state of the world which would kill Jesus again for his beliefs. |

Also I believe the melody is taken/reworked from a Carter Family song as is relatively common in the folk tradition. I think there are two different Carter family songs which fit the bill. |

| Woody Guthrie – This Land Is Your Land Lyrics

Yeah as it was already said this is a response to the Irving Berlin song and was originally called "God Blessed America For Me. Woody was a socialist/communist and sang at rallies and workers union related events. As someone who lived with the Okies and among hobos and other travellers he deals with the majesty of the United States. The dust cloud obviously refers to the dust bowl. |

| Joel Plaskett – Natural Disaster Lyrics

Well the Juan interpretation would make sense because I think Joel's place in Dartmouth was affected (a tree to the roof maybe?).
But if I remember correctly he said that he wrote the song on the way up to record the album in the South so in would make sense if he was going through the parts of the south suceptible to tornados. |

| Joel Plaskett – Love This Town Lyrics

Love This Town is Joel's Love Letter to Halifax (Piggy reference). A lot of this is really Halifax imagery like the Marquee, a venue, which has shut down for good and now can be rented once in awhile.
The holding a grudge thing is basically a reference to Sloan and the backlash they recieved for moving on to Toronto.
The Davey and me part refers to Dave Marsh, Joel's drummer. During the tour they were both really sick. |

| Sloan – The Other Man Lyrics

Specifically this song is about Chris Murphy's relationship with Leslie Fiest of Broken Social Scene, Fiest, By Divine Right fame. She was going out with one of the guys from Broken Social Scene, Kevin perhaps? Anyway, obviously exploring the point of view of Chris as the "Other Man".
A very good song, especially exploring the other side of things, being the cheater. It really shows that things are more complex than black and white. Society always paints the "Other Man" as a bad guy, which is pretty unfair. |

Chris Murphy wrote this song about his old girlfriend Laura Borealis. He said he taught her how to play guitar, something she claims is sort of untrue. The lyrics are really clever. I am especially a fan of the "eliminate the swearing" bit. |

| The Replacements – Alex Chilton Lyrics

Actually it is "I'm in love with that song".
Alex Chilton as it was already said fronted the 70s Power-Pop band Big Star and the Box Tops who had the 1960s hit "The Letter". I have heard Westerberg say on occasion that he just threw Chilton into the song but Peter Jesperson the manager/twin tone guy said that he took Westerberg along once to meet with Alex Chilton and Westerberg wrote it after that experience.
I think this song is pretty universal. It really gets at how it feels to really just have a band hit a chord with you.
Big Star are pretty wicked. I am a big fan of "I'm in Love With a Girl" and "Thirteen" in particular. |

Well Joel is a shameless Van Halen freak. This song seems to nod to "Hot for Teacher" a tad.
Also i like the school, pool thing it reminds me big star and Thirteen. |

The scarecrow bit is a wizard of Oz refrence. The song is about how people are leaving and the person singing feels they need to leave soemthing behind in their place. |

underwhelm un*der*whelm verb transitive UN*DER*WHELMED , UN*DER*WHELM*ING , UN*DER*WHELMS

underwhelmed by the prospect of reigning over a fourth-class nation as the rest
of us are by the prospect of living in it" Source: Peter Jay
Latina girl? I never thought of it that way.
I always basically pictured some girl that didn't focus on the little things so much. Really creative and smart and such. I believe Chris Murphy said he thought this song was really Canadian because it had a lot of wordplay. |

| The Libertines – What Became Of The Likely Lads Lyrics

I always see this song along the same vein as Can't Stand Me Now. It is weird because the song sounds so happy go lucky but the lyrics say soemthing else. It almost seems like a celebration at the same time. Like if this is all their is than it was a good run. |

| Joel Plaskett – Work Out Fine Lyrics

The fourth verse is about everyone leaving Halifax, whether it be friends or bands, ie Sloan.
the fifth verse was actually written after Joel had watched a bad 60s B movie called "Poor White Trash". The theme song went something like "Poor white trash where did he go, boogied his way to mexico". |

| Joel Plaskett – Down At The Khyber Lyrics
| 21 years ago
|
I always thought the line in question was "like a heavy mind unravellin' "
also I think its "I saw ghosts and I saw red"
Anywho, this song is about a girl (as it seems most songs are about) and the town where Joel resides, Halifax. The Khyber is a historic building downtown that hosts shows and Art openings. The lines "I got sick and I got sicker" refers to health problems Joel had been going through in his latter days in Thrush Hermit. |

| Big Star – I'm in Love with a Girl Lyrics
| 21 years ago

This song is a simplistic ode to love. Sometimes everything is terrible but every once in awhile you see everything completely clearly. Alex Chilton was describing the kind of girl that makes you want to be a better person. This is a great way to end an album. |
