In a nut shell, it's about two lovers about to go down on each other, who're snatched away by unseen forces and deposited in a wierd kind of alternative universie - Lewis Caroll come on down. After meeting several charicatures - each representing a different ridiculous facet of life - they're reunited in time for the second coming of the messiah, who'll "take them to the new Jerusalem". With this songs it is a good idea to take a general overview of it as a whole, and not get bogged down by the sporadic tangents. |

Pete's words: "REAL GOOD LOOKING BOY is a song I wrote quite a few years ago about two young men who worry about their looks. One of them, based on me - hopes and believes he might look like his best friend who is a conventionally handsome fellow. (He is disavowed of this notion by his mother). The second, based on Roger - hopes and believes he will one day turn out to be like the young Elvis. (He, more happily, sees part of his dream come true). They both find love in later life." |

I particularly like the play on the word 'reign'. Townshend's song is essentially a plea for love to dominate, control and "reign o'er" him. However, there's also strong references to rain and the cleansing effect of water in the song. It's not about any particular person, though. It has to do with the schizophrenic Jimmy choosing to take his life down a sturdier, less violent path than that of the mods. |
