I agree with some of you that it could possibly be about a drunk driver, but I've always thought of this song as speaking to a bully of some type who provoked a suicide. Or, in general, anyone who caused a death of someone and uses religion for forgiveness. So glad to see you well Overcome and completely silent now With heaven's help You cast your demons out [The person decides after causing someone's death to turn to religion to seek forgiveness and change how they treat people (completely silent now)] And not to pull your halo down Around your neck and tug you off your cloud [Uses a little bit of sarcasm to remind the person that they're not an "angel" like they think they are now after turning religious.] But I'm more than just a little curious How you're planning to go about making your amends To the dead [Pretty much self-explanatory] Recall the deeds as if they're all Someone else's atrocious stories Now you stand reborn before us all So glad to see you well [How people who turn to religion for forgiveness tend to separate themselves from their crimes/cruelty/mistakes and act as though they never happened. They become "reborn" as if they are now completely innocent and think that they can just forget about their past mistakes.] |
