Incubus – Love Hurts Lyrics

Wow, a lot of music haters on here! Here's my take on this most excellent song as well as an argument against it being a "weak song".. First off, this song is simple, not stupid. This song speaks in the face of that part of you that has been brainwashed to believe that love is lollipops and daisies. He's speaking to the part of you that knows better. Love is great, thats why he says 'without it he wouldn't survive', but he's also saying that love is a learning process. I think he is talking about romantic, not superficial love - love that goes a little deeper than just saying 'i love you'. This song refers to those moments of realization where you understand something more deeply for having lived through it. You search for love, the sense of unity with someone else, but nothing ever goes as scheduled and you end up feeling hurt where what you expected of the experience falls flat, but something more sacred/natural is revealed to you instead. Basically, its a "good hurt" because you are learning and growing from it, and thats something we all fall in love in the first place for. How come so many people hate the song? Yes, its different and more straight-forward from their other songs, but by no means weak. Its a simple, powerful statement of real love back up with powerful music. Its un-Incubus like, but so is every new song of their's, but after a while it becomes just another part of their musical legacy - which I think is to awaken all the forgotten corners in your mind that you need to be reminded of as you wander through the corporate-infestation of modern existence.

I think KaliDurga is more correct on how to interpret "Look Alive". Brandon's saying pay attention - life is fast. I think the sunglasses/looking at feet line is pointing out how we try to act cool and nonchalant in the face of the mystery of life and that by doing so we are passing by the opportunity to see ("The camera lens is opening ") the wider picture/perspective which is all of ours to enjoy if we avail ourselves of it ("The wider angle's yours ").

Its about having the ability to turn off to the world that is presented to you ("close my eyes, see for miles"=meditation). In a meditative state, a peaceful state of mind, you can definitely get a much broader view of your life ("I can see for miles"). Then we get to the confrontational aspect of this song - "These eyes are not your eyes, etc.." and I think this gets into him standing up for what he believes - that life is full of potential, but your "arid eyes" can't see that. To put it another way, someone else has a habitual, mundane existence and Boyd is at once confronting him about it, while at the same time denying the fact that existence is mundane at all. We choose how adventurous our lives are to become. Also, the lyrics aren't posted correctly, as pointed out earlier: "i was not around when those eyes of yours decided, so i refuse to kneel before the sights you choose to see." - which is the very essence of the song - both confronting someone who lives a stale life, while at the same time explaining that life is what you make of it. To me, this is entirely true - and that which makes our lives stale is our own fear of changing, our own fear of the unknown.

This song is amazing. Listen to it in a pair of good headphones and your mind will be blown wide open. To me, this song is about empowerment, but also the fear of our own power. As Nelson Mandela once said "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us." Even further, this song seems to suggest that with that power, comes a responsibility to use it for good.

Its about that initial rush of energy/anger/inspiration that you are much more powerful than you were ever led to believe. Its about wanting to run through the streets and interrupt the conformed scene and share your revelation with everyone - because everyone deserves to know their own infinite potential.

I always love reading how different people have completely different takes on songs, especially Incubus songs. What I don't agree with is the one-dimensionality of most of them. I think this song is about love, yes, but its not about the surface of love, its about what love really is - a chance for individual growth - the "your biggest fear" line can apply to all of life, but also love - I take it to mean that it is in our courage to move through our fears (no matter what they may be) that our growth as beings evolves and reaches new places.

Everyone! - Just lighten up! Is it about drugs? Or isn't it? Look, drugs, especially lsd, mushrooms, peyote and other visionary "drugs" are brain candy, plain and simple. This song, whether intentional or not is perfectly constructed for a trip into your inner space. I know, all of you "I have never touched" drugs, holier than thou people will get all uptight, but you ARE ingesting millions of toxic chemicals a day, thousands of pounds of fatty foods, containing billions of harmful 'drugs' (or chemicals, or mind-altering (no matter how small) substances, i.e. sugar, caffeine, etc..) a year - and for what? A roll of fat around your waist? A momentary fix of coffee in the morning? A social drink with your buddies? This song, along with most of their songs reminds us of the beauty of our existence - do you NEED drugs to get there - of course not, can you enjoy this song without them - of course, .. but music, and especially their music, takes on completely different dimensions when you choose to take a trip. Whether or not it was about drugs is NOT the point. The point is, rather, the meaning of it is simply the beauty of existence when you take a moment to contemplate it.
