Modest Mouse – Float On Lyrics 21 years ago
I think it's pretty straightforward: Look, shit happens. You just have to learn from it and float on. Perhaps I was just taking it the way I wanted it because I was sort of depressed when the song came out and it really lifted my spirits. It also made sense to me in that Modest Mouse has matured and Isaac Brock tries not be so down any more. In fact, Brock says that he was consciously trying to make a more upbeat song in an interview: http://www.theonionavclub.com/feature/index.php?issue=4014

I admit though that after watching the video, it makes you wonder if someone isn't just making fun of people with such optimistic attitudes as delusional.

As for those who feel cheated now that Modest Mouse is "popular" now. Don't feel bad. Just think of it like this: more people can get the pleasure you've been recieving for years, even if it's only for a song or two. Out of the thousands who like the popular singles, dozens of people will take the time to check out the earlier and fall in love with it too. I should know, I'm one of those people.

Weezer – El Scorcho Lyrics 21 years ago
Heh... I knew a couple of half-Japanese girls in college (twins even) and Rivers is right, they do it to you every time.

Anyway, I won't waste time explaining the story as several people have already done it and certainly better than I could. But the song does capture the whole frustration and fantasy feeling one gets being around a girl you just have to talk to but can't. At least for a little nerd like me...

Weezer – Paperface Lyrics 21 years ago
Pretty straight foward, like a lot of Weezer songs. Pretending to be something you're not in order to fit in, be smooth, or escape from authorities risks you losing your true identity.

Great song by the way.

Oh and maybe my hearing is off, but some the lyrics listed here seem incorrect.

Hah! I love all the interpretations here! That's the beauty of music. It's not done once they finish recording in the studio, it still has to be interpreted by the listener.

That said I believe the song is simply a show of a loss of trust in the world. It's defeatist in a way in that the singer just wants to stay home in his own reality as the world outside can no longer be fixed no matter how hard we try. And it got that way because we weren't paying attention.

It does seem to contain allusion to the current US administration and the book 1984 but I think Thom was just trying to capture an emotion here. A sense of despair and frustration and not pointing his pen in any particular direction.

But eh... to each their own...

The Smashing Pumpkins – Bodies Lyrics 21 years ago
Interesting takes on this song, all with valid points.

I think the song covers both sides of the love issue - falling in love and then losing that love - as forms of suicide. In the first verse we have someone falling in love and in the process giving up what it means to be themselves and taking on the life of their partner. Casting away their "simple life of need" and placing their partner's burdens on their shoulders ("of the sights you have been shown / of the hurt you call your own"). I've known many people who seem to lose their identity when they fall in love. Forgetting all their friends and pursuits to live for this one person they love deeply. In this case, love is indeed suicide.

In the second verse the person loses his/her love. Or maybe they are just falling out of love as they come to terms with the pain that they tried to take on in the first verse and realize the conflicts are pushing the couple apart. But despite all that, the singer remembers that no one felt like this love it's killing him to be apart from it.

But perhaps I'm being too literal...
