Morrissey – We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful Lyrics 21 years ago
James indeed. Tim Booth, the lead singer of James to be more specific. Once upon a time, they were mates, and Morrissey even covered a James song for some of his live dates. Ahhh wellll...

Joni Mitchell – All I Want Lyrics 21 years ago
The bit when Joni sings "All i really want our love to do/is to bring out the best in me and in you to" is utterly poignant. Can anyone else tell me of a better reason or explanation for love?
"i want to make you feel free" echos a similiar sentiment. i guess Joni is saying that if you have (her) love, you are free from all fears and insecurities, you feel like nothing is insurmountable or restrictive and you can just soar. With such a one at your side, all else seems trivial. Gorgeous.

The Jam – Saturdays Kids Lyrics 21 years ago
Is this song a tribute to the working class of England, or an indictment of it? Or both at the same time? More anger from Paul Weller. Genius.

The Clash – The Crooked Beat Lyrics 21 years ago
Yet another homage to the Clash's love of reggae, courtesy of Paul Simonon. A simple yet effective bass line with with the echo drums we all love in reggae, and a Mikey Dread vocal bit to emphasize the point. People can go on about "London Calling" all they want (and deservedly so), but "Sandinista" is my favorite Clash album. Beyond the constraints of simple "punk", that album took it all in (a flawed masterpiece is still a masterpiece). Anyways, Paul Simonon always was the reggae man of the band ("Guns of Brixton" anyone?), and it shows here. i guess reggae in those days was basically punk from a different place (or punk was reggae from a different place), and it is interesting how the punks of the time were into the whole reggae scene. Now when one thinks "reggae", they tend to think hippies and/or dancehall. But this song shows ya where the Clash were coming from, and what they were into.
