| Maxïmo Park – Going Missing Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
"I feed my body with things that I don't need, Until I sink to the bottom" Could be a total mis-reading of the lyrics but to me this references alcohol, basically drinking himself into oblivion, hence going missing...basically hiding himself away from society and everyone to get over it, there is nothing for him to lose from giving up on the outside world..... |

There is another possibility for the line "I tried it with Charlene And I spent three days on my back " He tries to get with a gril from another clique and is knocked back by the guys in that group he is beaten up and left on his back, not sure which makes more sense or is better but just anothr possibility |

| The Rakes – 22 Grand Job Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| yeh its bringing back the punk tradition of proper social commentry looking at the way a lot of people in the UK are in a frank and realsitic manner, getting by day at a time then going out drinking... much as Hard-Fi showed with living for the weekend, although i question the quality of those lyrics in places... these on the other hand are great a lot of credits gotta go to these guys for producing an album which keeps music not money at its heart and produces a set of lyrical wonders and whats more the tracks are the right length and unlike so much music right now (...arctic monkeys...) is not over-produced or pretentious | |
| The Rakes – Strasbourg Lyrics | 20 years ago |

| The Rakes – We Are All Animals Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Again a lyrical masterpiece... underlining the behaviour of large chunks of society like animals, and still thinking we are superiour "We like to think we're at a special place; the stars revolve around the human race, I get the impression these guys may like the old theory of evolution :) but we're just mammals, just, primates..." |

| The Rakes – Work, Work, Work (Pub, Club, Sleep) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Think we have all been there... nasty hangover trying to get through the day, everyone annoys you... that line "if that prick coughs again In the back of my head I'll smash your fucking face in" also great "I just drift along with no focus or meaning, Lean back, stare up at the ceiling" bloody brilliant... played this on one of those days made me glad i wasnt alone! |

| The Rakes – Terror Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Firstly gotta say i love this song and all the Rakes stuff. Great work real proper punk back in British Music, hope they get a big break soon, they're better than half the crap hanging around. As for this song I can believe phychoteens explanation sounds sensible. I prefer to look at it from the punk point of view of a social commentry he is discussing the fact that everyone is afraid of a terrorist attack and the impact it is having on everyones lives we are losing freedom to fear... we now see "Every plane is a missile Every suitcase a bomb" which i think has become worryingly true... Hats off to the rakes and keep up the good work and keep the tracks as they are dont do what the monekys did and lengthen them by 30seconds to a min just to make it more radio friendly! |

| Arctic Monkeys – Fake Tales of San Francisco Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I have to say im starting to agree with you ntw, while i still say that its not fundementally american, there are strong influecnes. I also have issues with the monkeys attitude inn places, having read a few more interviews ect. they view themselves as their own leaders, totally indie, not concered with what the public thinks ect. but thats not really the case its a wonderful PR exersise. Gets them looking "indie" which is the cool look at the moment, and yet they still added a minute and a half to i bet you look good on the dacne floor from its demo version to sinlge, why to make it more radio friendly i would guess.... so yeh they are still out there to make their money and be mega succesfull despite what they may say.... but i still gotta say i love the music but loose some of the poncy padding on your tracks they can mostly be about a minuite shorter :) But i do still have to disargee with yo ntw that they're lyrics for the most part are pretty clever, ok they dont sound as smooth as a lot but i think thats half the joy of them.... it sounds great as most of their music does... only problem they face is being over hyped as the "band that defines a generation" which i dont think is going to be the case... they arnt that great or unique to be honest... good but not masters |

| Arctic Monkeys – Fake Tales of San Francisco Lyrics | 20 years ago |

Oki doki lets try and work through some of ntw's arguments here.. and if im lucky i'll come out making some sense. 1) The idea that all British rock is trying to be american. Right so lets look at it... yes i'll conceed rock has its very basic origins in black music culture from the states. But the way in which it is combined with other genres, and the progression that has been made means that it is now almost unrecognizable from its american roots. British rock may have taken roots, like all rock, in black music but the genre has moved on so much from there that it can no longer be said to be sounding american. In fact if we look at current american "rock" it is in a totally different style. The, historically speaking, have moved the genre forward so much that it cant be claimed they are trying to emulate anyone. The Beatles being but one example, the whole punk movement is a British Phenomenon, which only saw the light of day in the states as a watered down pop-punk like the early greenday and The Offspring. With the likes of Ska being based more upon Carribean influences than american. So really it is totally unfair and insulting to the hunderds of British people who have contributed so much to music to say that they are simply emulating existing american styles. 2) The quality of the lyrics is actually very good... they are putting accross a message in an intelligent way, underlining the sub-culture that exists. You also have to realise they are writing lyrics are they say them, in the North "bird" is still used extensivly, just because political corectness has stopped people from conversing in certain areas it hasnt stopped the majority of the UK. 3) This song is about a band trying to be somthing they are not, cool, and any good. The Monkeys on the other hand are very down to earth and self-critical in places (look at the start of the I Bet YOu Look good on the dancefoolr video) they object to the arrogence of certain people who feel they are the dogs bolux simply because they can play a guitar and sing a bit. So the song is not undermining itslef, it is opposed to somthing totally different to what the Arctic Monkeys are. 4)"Art can be about possibilities beyond your own reality, which is why bands like the Arctic Monkeys slagging off people with ideas strikes me as so essentially regressive." Certainly it can be, but what art isnt is a bragging licence, thats what the song is talking about, its nothing to do with people having dreams and writing about them in songs its about a band going to a gig and acting like they are superior to everyone even though they are crap. Now im not opposed to artists building up mystique around themselves, the White Stripes have done a masterful job at this, what i think is crap, and it would seem the monkeys do too are the arrogent prats who often appear in bands and assume they must be great, i dont see how because i can play a guitar why i should be allowed to walk out and say erm well i have 7 houses and live in LA 6 months of the year beaccuse im a Rock Star....bolux really..... Just out of intrest ntw are you a fan of razorlight and they're delightful lead singer? :) |

| Franz Ferdinand – The Fallen Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| well on the Culture Show earlier this month they said it was about the extrordianry in everyday life, people whoa re down and at the fringes of society still doing amazing things and its a tribute to them. As for Christian Conservatism, I'm not convinced, the UK doesnt really have a big Christian Right Wing movement so im not sure how much of an influence it has. | |
| Franz Ferdinand – Eleanor, Put Your Boots On Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
seeing these lads at home in glasgow on the 22nd November, shame its in the SECC but still its a homecoming gig woohoo! and he actually addmited thay the song was about eleanor freidberger in The Big Issue in september, a lot of it is acutally written about places he's never been though so... but yeh it does sound just like the beatles really helps to give the album ups and downs, as opposed to the first one where all the songs were quite similar, although still great. |

| Franz Ferdinand – Walk Away Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| OK well while i agree with magglesworth i would like to add a little disclaimer to certain sections of his comment, we obviously do care about 9/11 it was a tragedy granted but really for us it was nothing new, we have been under a terrorist threat for the last 30 years thanks to the IRA (who by the way were funded by the US :/) but stilli doubt very much this is what the song is written about. I agree it is about a girl friend leaving, the refences to 9/11 are higly ambigous, and as for homosexual pedophillia... just no :P Stop reading so deeply into the song, its really fairly straight forward, these guys arn't political warriors, they are a set of Glagow Art School graduates who write about what they know, the goings on in glasgow and average day to day life. | |
| Franz Ferdinand – Do You Want To Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
With reference to "I love your friends they're all so arty, oh yeah" you forget that a number of the members of Franz Ferdinand are graduates of Glasgow Art Collage... they are art shcool boys, and hence going to the Transmission gallery. They always take bikes on tour so they can cycle off to local art galleries. This is what they mean its nothing to do with gay men being art, its exactly what it is they, and presumably all their friends are arty. |
