I am convinced that the death of Rob Dawson, the original piano player with Augi March, deeply effected Glen's songs on the Strange Bird album. In a ruch there three or four songs about death. This is a song about death, suicide. The masks we wear to convince ourselves that all is well, while covering our fears, our black hearts. However, as with all of Glen's lyrics the meanings are quite often inscrutible. To me this song is joyous, a song asking people to look into themselves, to lift themselves up from this often depressing life. |

This is a song about the inevitability of breaking up, when one has such feelings of worthlessness. He feels worthless, inferior. And even if the relationship has lasted a long time, and there have been happy moments (which are seen only as a cover - clouds of smoke), he feels in himself that there is no reason for her to love him. That he will always be alone. He is unloved, unlovable. |
