Augustana – Sweet and Low Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's about having a child in general. What I get from it is that the child is the force that normalizes the crazy life of a musician--"hold me down, little girl". Basically he is saying that he desperately hopes this child can be a positive force in his life and that he will take care of her and protect her. He also vows to raise her well--vowing to not to make the same mistakes he did with his own parents.

Beautiful song :)

Augustana – Stars and Boulevards Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's about someone who has left his hometown and someone he cared about to pursue life in the big city (most likely LA). "Stars and boulevards" is definitely a reference to the walk of fame on hollywood blvd, at least in my mind. He has moved to LA and got caught up in the life there--"they're only gonna tell you all the bad things i've done", "late nights won't do me justice", etc. He now feels isolated and has lost himself, and is far away from the person he loves.

"one last phone call from you" refers to him attempting to connect with her in a last-ditch effort to find himself and what he had before that he now feels he has lost.

Shinedown – Second Chance Lyrics 17 years ago
i think the comet reference is that it's moving really fast, which contrasts with him being stuck in one place - "always running in place". the comet shoots by and reminds him that he is getting nowhere. that ties in with the man in the moon, disappearing into the stratosphere. this makes him realize that it's time to break away from his parents and make his own life because that is the only way he is going to be happy.

this song makes me cry. it makes me think about suicide. it also reminds me of one of my best friends, who came to the u.s. to make a better life for himself and ended up broke, depressed, and sick. he just left to go back home a few days ago and when i hear this song, it reminds me of him. i miss him very much.

Scissor Sisters – Take Your Mama Lyrics 19 years ago
It's pretty clear the song is about a gay guy coming out to his mother. But it's about saying "f*ck it", not taking it so seriously, and just having fun and "doing the best we can". I think the part in the chorus that goes "take your mama out" is sort of a play on words--the word "out" being a pretty big clue as to what the song is about.

I don't like any of the other songs I've heard by this band, but I can't stop listening to this one. I love it!

U2 – In A Little While Lyrics 19 years ago
this song is about a hangover, but I think it has a deeper meaning, too. the way it keeps repeating the phrase "in a little while" gives a sense of constantly being one step behind where you want to be. it's almost like saying "i'll start exercising tomorrow", but then when tomorrow comes you say the same thing. you are constantly trying to improve your life because you know what you are doing is not good for you (in this case, getting drunk), and yet you never seem to be able to catch up and make things right.

it's also about your bad habits hurting the ones you love. you get worried that if you keep ruining your life, the people you love will lose their patience and leave you: "If I crawl, if I come crawling home/Will you be there?"

that's just my interpretation but the great thing about beautiful songs like this is that you take away from it what you want to take.

Afghan Whigs – Citi Soleil Lyrics 20 years ago
Citi Soleil is a slum in Haiti; it is considered to be one of the poorest slums in the world. If you see pictures of it, it looks horribly depressing.

I think the song is about how, even though the world around you may be incredibly shitty, it's always possible to keep hope. "Ooh child, I'll meet you child, on the sunny side--it's alright. No lie, and no cryin'...it's alright, alright."

It's about keeping your hope and innocence alive no matter what.

Electric President – Insomnia Lyrics 20 years ago
i think the song is about two people who are far apart--geographically and mentally--that they can't be together even though they care about each other.

the last verse shows this perfectly: the fact that BOTH of them, not just one, are prevented from making it work.

the first four lines of the last verse deal with the "other" person, the one the singer is singing to. the line "i hope you're learning to stay" shows that the person to whom he is singing is the kind of person who can't stay in one place for very long. perhaps that's why it didn't work out: the person couldn't stand to be in one place for very long.

however, the last four lines of the last verse show that the singer is the same way. "i'm a head case if i don't keep moving/ and my head hurts if i don't sit still...it's a hole that i'll never quite fill." he feels as if he needs to constantly be going new places to feel whole, but no matter where he goes, he'll never feel quite right.

i know exactly how that feels, i've been all over the world and never found one place that i could call my home. i think that's why i relate to the last verse so much. also, there's this guy i dated and we still see each other a few times a year. but he lives on the other side of the world (literally) so we don't even bother. this song really hits me, for those two reasons.

Nickel Creek – This Side Lyrics 20 years ago
to me the song makes me think of moving...a lot of the lyrics apply to exactly how i feel right now. i've lived in one country my whole life, even though i'm not from that country. then i went to college and i had to leave to go to the states, which is technically where i'm from, except i've never lived there. when i come back home to visit (like right now), i listen to this song a lot because it makes me feel better. "it's foreign on this side"--i'm technically in a foreign country, even though i grew up here. "reasons few have i, to go back again"--i really don't want to go back to the states. "it's foreign on this side, but it feels like i'm home again"--that's exactly it. it just fits.

i'm sure that's not what the songwriter mean when he/she wrote it, but that's just what i get out of it.

Guster – Come Downstairs And Say Hello Lyrics 21 years ago
i think it has several meanings. one of them is the idea that he's being anti-social...he's shut himself up in his room doing pointless things like watching MTV and doing the whole WOO/DSOTM thing. however, he's trying to get himself out of that, with the whole "come downstairs and say hello" thing, trying to draw himself out of his shell and become more social and less shy.

coupled with that is the fact that he wants to start moving in a new direction, to do something with his life besides wasting it, but he knows that as soon as he tries, things will change again: "i look straight at what's coming ahead, soon it's gonna change in a new direction". it's actually quite depressing to me, because it seems like he's not making any progress. that's essentially why the end of the song is very repetitive--he's not getting anywhere.

Guster – Keep It Together Lyrics 21 years ago
this song is definitely about the guys coming together and forming a band. it's also about overcoming the obstacles as a group, to be able to do what they really want.

Guster – Ramona Lyrics 21 years ago
i may be way off here, cuz i dont think any of the guys in the band have kids, but to me it sounds a little bit like the relationship between a father and his daughter as she grows up.

at the very beginning, he says "i couldn't go to sleep till you came in". he sounds like a parent worrying when his child stays out too late.

it also explains the part about punching him the eye--babies do that sometimes, not necessarily as a sign of dislike, but out of affection. when he asks, "did you want me to stay?" it could be that he's unsure of the relationship they have; perhaps he's divorced and doesn't see her a lot.

the verse that starts off, "when i was younger and thought of myself..." definitely sounds like something a lot of fathers would say once they have children.

also, the fact that she only knows one song and the references to "your favorite singer" sound like it's a child. like when you're a kid, you hear one song that you like and suddenly it's your favorite song and the artist is your favorite singer.

and finally, at the end, he says "we're going to pieces, we're falling apart", it could be that she's a teenager now, and she's going through the whole phase where she dislikes her parents and is starting to outgrow them. he says, "so come and sing that song for me, just like your favorite singer"--reminds me of when your parents tell you that you'll always be their little baby. ;)

i hope i'm not way off.

Guster – Diane Lyrics 21 years ago
i think it's about two people who are together just because they don't want to be alone. when he says "the fear returns so deep", etc., he's talking about the fear of being single. they are both afraid of being alone, so they both latched onto each other, and aren't sure now if they really love each other or if it's just because they each need someone or a relationship to feel complete.

when he says "we close our eyes and hope that we'll be fine", he is saying that both of them know there's a possibility they don't really love each other, but they are turning a blind eye to it in the hope that maybe they really are in love.

Guster – Careful Lyrics 21 years ago
i think it's about being in a relationship with someone who is very self-conscious and insecure, and possibly has psychological problems. as a result of this, the person needs constant reassurance that they are loved and wanted by the other person (the speaker).

Guster – Long Way Down Lyrics 21 years ago
the word "dreamt" at the beginning is left out--it's supposed to be "dreamt i was dead..." also, it's supposed to be "all the lights are changing" the second time, it's not the same thing as before.

i think it's about realizing that you are too good for the person you are in love with. he has a dream in which he dies and floats up towards heaven, but the other person stays down below, possibly going to hell. the angels sing to him, revealing who she really is (a "bad" person morally). the higher up he goes, the less important and influential she becomes to him--"this far away, you're a miniature to me;/are you sorry you've almost disappeared?" deep down they both know she doesn't deserve him.

in the end, the dream is coming to an end--"now the notes are fading" (the angels' voices), and "everything's turned around"--it's almost over. when he says, "i can't help but thinking, it's a long way down", he is realizing just how far apart they are as people--she is way below him, and he is up near heaven. this could also have a double meaning: he knows that when he wakes up he will still be with her--he will fall way back down to the place where he doesn't belong (the relationship with her). he knows that when you are in love with someone, it's hard to leave them, even when you see them for what they really are.

that's what i think.

Guster – So Long Lyrics 21 years ago
whenever i hear this song it reminds me of something that happened recently, even though i know it has nothing to do with the song. i started really liking this guy, who seemed perfect...until he told me he was gay. i was completely crushed and down for awhile: "yes i heard all that you had to say / that's when it all fell apart." also, "i liked you better before," before i found out.

then there's the part that says "but in my defense, i'd do it again, i don't need to know who you are." because he's such a great person, i'd get close to him again if i had the chance, even knowing it would end up like this.

the part that goes "so long, so long and onto the next one" relates because this is just the latest in a string of miserable failures in regards to the opposite sex, so i know pretty soon i'll move on to the next failure. and "go on and it won't be too soon"--i just want him to leave me alone now, because every time i see him or talk to him on the phone or online it makes me sad.

so whatever this song is about, i'll always like it because not only is it a great song, but pretty much every word of it relates to how i feel right now.
