Then he realizes all that stuff will not make him whole like a wife and child. "are you lost or incomplete? do you feel like a puzzle? you can’t find your missing piece?" So he changes the meaning of the refrain to either the possibilities of his child or realizing from his brother that he can still do all this stuff with a wife and kids. "in the future, where will I be? you can climb a ladder up to the sun or a write a song nobody has sung or do something that’s never been done do something that’s never been done" The I - You part of the refrain adds the ambiguity of whether he's talking about himself or his child. |

See I take this one differently. I think its Trent's way of saying he's almost through with the music scene. the scene " I'm becoming less defined as days go by Fading away, well you might say I'm losing focus" the scene again: "less concerned with fitting into the world--your world that is" He's made his money, had his life lasting songs (Closer, for example), made his mark on culture, he's done. He really can't top himself:: "Cause it doesn't really matter any more" What its like to remove yourself from the spotlight, leave the fans for a while: "Yes I'm alone, then again I always was As far back as I can tell I think maybe it's because you were never really real to begin with" The "you" being the fans and fame...they weren't true friends or whatnot. And the "dot" in his eye was the first inkling he didn't want to continue with his lifestyle / career / being famous and it grew into a scab, as in the thought kept getting bigger and bigger. When he climbed down through and wasn't where he was supposed to be is when he actually honored the thought for a little while and what he saw w/o fame and music was "something he shouldn't have seen"...as in, he liked it wayyy too much. "i just lead you up to hurt myself" He keeps making records for his fans, but hates the lifestyle "and it worked...yes it did!" He just keeps making great records and people keep coming to see him, but he's fucking done. and the coup de gras: "there is no you, there is only me." He doesn't live to please us, his fans, even though he may have in the past. Now he's going to please himself and leave the scene. Obviously this is just my opinion, but its a very different angle to take the song vs. just another song about a girl... |
