Possibly one of my top Lagwagon songs. It's beautifully cynical, but has a good rhythm and sound to it. Lunacy has found me, gotta have a family! Great stuff. |

The Scorpions version doesn't have the lines "I've been wanting that 12 year old love...I've been watching you since you were 4". Strange that Lagwagon would make the song so creepy. It kinda works I guess. |

| Stars – Why I Want to Save You Lyrics

I'm pretty sure Amy Millan's vocals are saying "you can't save me" as opposed to agreeing with Torquil; it's more in the Stars style to have an antagonistic dialogue in their songs. |

I have this song but I got it from the itunes store so it has DRM on the file, which kinda sucks. Great tune and I think the lyrics are pretty much correct, although I have a few suggestions:
"i lost you today, forgot to say, that you can ask for more"
and
"From where I sit, with your back turned, here it's just begun"

| Stars – Don't Be Afraid to Sing Lyrics

I think faeriedust87 hit the nail on the head. Don't be afraid to sing just because you know the song has to end at some point.
The bonus track is "the comeback" -a much underrated song. A great end to a great album. |

| Stars – Tonight Lyrics
|
Beautiful song, about an attempt at a lovers reunion, for me I believe the key to this song can be found in the lines:
"I try to speak but you don't hear me
When you're gone you still feel near me
For awhile, for a little while"
Throughout the song he's attempting to contact his lover through telegraphs, telephones, carrier pigeons ("birds that fly through the air so you hear me sigh") but failing to being able to.
The "cap in hand" line strongly hints that it's the 2nd person who broke off the relationship. The narrator appears as dtsneak mentioned to be the submissive character in this scenario.
The song ends with "nothing is working tonight" and then some pleading, but more importantly doesn't inform the listener as to what happens, leaving them in the same position as the narrator, in want of more.
Beautiful song. |

Great song, but something never sat right in the line "with or without love I'm gonna get a man who can fulfill my dream" -do it yourself! You don't need a man!
Brief rantings aside, 'tis a great song :) |

| Stars – The Night Starts Here Lyrics
|
Stars are notorious for sneaking dual meanings into their songs, most notably through the use of male and female vocalists (most apparent in "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead").
Here it appears that the male is attempting to leave the relationship, with child being quite an apt metaphor for the new situation. The death of the relationship is the birth of new beginnings. The time we had, the task at hand, the love it takes to destroy a man, the ecstasy of being free all allude to his desire to leave.
For the female character however it's almost as though she's saying how the male brought this situation on himself. YOU name YOUR child after YOUR fear and tell them I have brought YOU here" -almost as if she feels blamed for the breakup.
Dropping a coin into a sea is throwing away something valuable which will never return, but also alludes to something like a wishing well. Quite a beautiful reference in my opinion.
The male character wants out, the female wants him back ("forget your fear"), but realizes that it'll never happen.
Were we angels after all? I don't know. |

| Public Enemy – She Watch Channel Zero?! Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
...and the internet doesn't fry your brain?
I think it's more about disillusionment with reality. Television here can be seen to provide hollow, unrealistic role models for life. She's cold lookin' for that hero, something which TV can provide, but ultimately which is false. She rejects any man (who gets dissed like a roach) because he can not live up to any expectations which the TV creates, and that's what makes him mad.
I agree with scarecrow in that context is important, Generation X was seen as the MTV generation. This song shows the harmful effects of what Baudrillard would describe as hyperreality, what could also be said as "the myth being larger than any man". |

| Stars – What the Snowman Learned About Love Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
I agree with you there the_mime, but it's written from the snowman's perspective, with the sun eating up the sea and wrapping round our knees implying melting. This negative view of the sun can also be seen in the way in which nature is depicted, as "a sky that refuses to die". Also, "You come around, you come around..." implies the passage of days. It's also worth noting the gender of snowMAN and "summer SHE" sends, almost as if the sun is the female destroying the relationship.
With this in mind then, it's almost as if the snowman is being melted by his lover- what the snowman learned about love is that it'll destroy him. |

| Smoking Popes – Rubella Lyrics
|
|
To expand on spamuel's point, Rubella is the scientific term for chicken pox. Josh Caterer is using the metaphor to describe his romance, a very well used one may i add. Chicken pox is something which is 'safe' to have when you're young but dangerous to have when you're an adult, and you can only get it once in your life. As such that makes this love all the more strong. Great song. |

Originally an A.C. Newman demo, modified and turned into a New Pornographers song. The lyrics have varied ever since it's conception, here's an old Choir Practice cover of it:
http://www.mintrecs.com/players/video/index.php?id=52&artist=The%20Choir%20Practice
In a recent CBC Radio 3 podcast, a member of the Choir practice said that her interpretation was the fear of failure, whereas A.C. Newman himself defined it as hurting someone by saying you're doing something for 'us' but rather doing it for yourself.

| The Weakerthans – Letter Of Resignation Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
It seems strange that no one has seemed to notice that a "Letter of Resignation" is most likely a suicide note, or perhaps a formal letter to the family (the formal tone being shown in "to whom it may concern, this is to inform, yours sincerely yours").
The semantic fields of death and self destruction in this song (e.g. "another dying afternoon, she says she's leaving soon") help to emphasize this.
With this in mind then, the bus that's leaving half an hour from now, not taking her where she really wants to go can be seen as death, with her luggage at her side being the bad memories of the life which she experiences (living in a basement-bachelor suite, working 10 hour shifts etc.).
In my opinion this is the Weakerthans at their best. |

i see this in a marxist sence, purple traditionally has always been related with regality and the monarch (due to purple being the hardest dye colour to produce traditionally), in that sence "all yours sanity and wits they will all vanish" could be interpreted as a critique against the state. That's my two cents anywho. |

Sandra refers to Sandra Bernhardt, one of Josh's crushes when younger, Rubella is the scientific term for chicken pox, megan is a beautiful name and a damn good song, and i might be mistaken but the song 'paul' could be about saint paul, Adena was a native american tribe, but how that relates to the lyrics of this song i have no idea |

| Smoking Popes – Paul Lyrics
|
this song is so catchy but as i listen to it more, the meaning of the song changes; i used to think paul was in the 3rd person, then i believed it was the 1st person and now im back in the 3rd again. On one side you can see the 1st person's focus upon the downsides ('broken dreams and a heart that's stuck to the ground') stops him from getting the girl (shown in 'some people say that the answer comes from within, meanwhile she'll say i love you paul').
Or you can see it as Paul being the 1st person, someone who beats himself up but has a loving girlfriend (the uplifting guitar riff in the chorus can emphasise this, the hey hey part too), possibly not wanting to be in a relationship? either way, it's an amazing song, definatly one of my top 3... |

| Smoking Popes – Megan Lyrics
|
i think this can be seen in two ways; personally i see the train symbolising love, catching him by supprise ('the gate came down'), coming and running him over. His 'bloodshot rear view mirror eyes' give a hint as to him not doing anything about megan, this love. Likewise, the 2nd verse gives the image of a house party, upstairs being the place for people to have sex, he's so caught up about this girl that he waits there despite somebody calling his name. He never goes about getting the girl even though he likes her and that's his downfall; sitting back on the tracks is trying to get that initial feeling of love, but in the end being lead away by someone else, he waited as long as he could- wait being the operative word.
I can see the suicide theme too, the stairs perhaps leading to heaven? bloodshot eyes showing that he wanted to be on the tracks? but i dont know, best thing about lyrics is that they can be ambiguous. Amazing song (the acoustic version rules too)... |
