Personally I think it's about people who accuse AFI of "selling out" and the like. "Guess it was just an echo when you would sing my song, all the notes you'd forgotten now you left abandoned, I remember" "And doesn't it seem funny how soon you did forget, all the words now have lost their weight" etc. |

| AFI – The Killing Lights Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I think hyperview nailed it; I think it's about people who go out every night, get wasted on any assorted cocktail of alcohol and drugs and wind up on the bathroom floor. Not that, you know, there's anything wrong with doing that once in a while, but the people who do it a lot tend to not go very far, and occassionally die. (The Killing Lights.) 'Course AFI's straight-edge, so it makes even more sense in that context. | |

| Actually, I take it back - what's more pervasive and out-of-left-field than the Jesus theories are the "this song's about vampires" ones. If every one of those theories I've seen were correct, half of AFI's songs would be about Jesus, and the other half would be about vampires, and a few would be about both. (Has anyone ever seen Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter?) | |
| AFI – The Missing Frame Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I love this song. Still not clear on what it means... I think it has something to do with the general lack of empathy of human beings towards each other and how Davey (or the narrator) slowly comes to not care, too. "Will the flood behind me put out the fire inside me?" "'Cause it's apparent that you don't care and it's sunk into me, 'cause I don't care, now no one cares." Those are the lines that most stood out to me. | |

I agree with Yigamiester, I think the song's about being gay. I've spun a few other ideas around in my head, and some of them are really good, but that's the only one I can really make all the lyrics fit with. Maybe it's just 'cause I'm gay personally, but a friend of mine actually came up with that theory before I did, and they're not, so I have to assume that's not the only reason. I could be wrong of course, the song is very ambiguous, and I know it's always... sensitive (for some reason) delving into issues of sexuality, but that's what I think it's about. Do I think Davey himself is gay, or bi? Not necessarily - I'll be honest, I neither know nor care (though I would be interested to hear an answer from his lips, and not his fans). But I think that's what the song is about. |

I don't understand why people consistently project Christian lyrics onto a band that... isn't Christian. Jesus-freaks - not everything is about Jesus! You need to diversify a little. There's a lot of people out there who think Miss Murder is about Jesus, (WHAT?) as well as numerous other songs they've done (the funniest one to me being The Prayer Position, in which Davey quite clearly says "I can't help but... look to my species and tremble to think that God is just." That sounds pretty decidedly un-Christian to me. Just... stop it! The "I think it's about Jesus" answers are getting more frequent and less credible than the "I think it's about a girl" answers. Anyway, I forget who it was who nailed it, but whoever said the song is about an empath who feels other people's pain, I couldn't agree more. Someone who other people confide their secrets in, but the weight of that starts to take its toll. (Another song with a similar - albiet not identical - theme is Overexposure.) That's quite obviously what it's about, just read the lyrics with that in mind and you can see it plain as day. You don't have to stretch and contort the lyrics into fitting the Jesus theory, just let them fall into place naturally. |

| AFI – Midnight Sun Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I'm fairly certain the original poem this is based on is about going mad; people in the arctic are known to go mad while staring at the "midnight sun," the sun that never sets the closer you get to the arctic circle. | |

| I'd just like to say one more time that on further consideration and after seeing that new bridge, I really, REALLY disagree that this song is about Jesus. It just... doesn't make sense for it to be, especially given the video. | |
| AFI – Lower It Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Yeah this one was from the Black Sails era, which means both Mark and Geoff were already gone, so it could conceivably be about either of them. But as someone mentioned, Geoff is still close with them; he joined Tiger Army, and Tiger Army and AFI are very close. | |

Well, the lyrics posted by sparkle motion are better... so I kind of hope those are the real ones. Either way, awesome song. TCS - oh everything is "emo" now. The word doesn't mean anything anymore. Fucking Johnny Cash was emo. "I fell into a burning ring of fire?" If a band today sang that lyric, they'd be labelled "emo," as would their fans, and that would be that. |

I don't think it's about vampires. I mean, maybe as a sort of allegory, but I don't think that's what the song is ABOUT, you know? I'm more inclined to say it's about gaining a new realization and disgust for the world; kind of like "Overexposure." The singer is discovering a whole new side of the world that he hadn't seen before, his naivete is disappearing, his old self is dying, and a new, much more cynical and jaded self is born, able to see the horrible things in the world. |

"does anyone the song they sing for about 2 minutes before they actually start singing miss murder in the video for miss murder (directors cut)?" The song is "Prelude 12/21," the opening of the new album. |

Okay, first of all, I've heard people calling AFI "emo" lately, especially since StS was released. Now, this hardly surprises me, as "emo" is now a catch-all label that is applied to EVERYTHING that's even remotely emotional, usually in a derogatory way. It's fucking ridiculous. No one is safe, "emo" is the new "fag" it seems - not that there's anything wrong with either, and it's the same people who have a problem with both of them, I've found. But either way, all of the band members are over 30. (Aren't they?) You CAN'T be over 30 and emo. Oh, and as for them selling out... they got good. People started listening to them. Honestly, if you're playing music for 15 years and your sound doesn't change/improve, you fucking suck. THAT BEING SAID... I think that pierrot show is probably the closest in his interpretation. "Make beauty stay if I take my life?" That does resonate when you think of people like James Dean or Kurt Cobain or Marilyn Monroe or Sid Vicious, and others who have died young and still relatively pretty. It's got all the makings of a young idol who crashed, "Simply a look can break your heart;" "Dreams of his crash won't pass or how they all adored him." Etc. It all fits. The song could be in reference to someone Davey or another of the band members knew personally who died young like those idols, or it could be generalized. Knowing that they're straight-edge, it could be someone who OD'ed or something (they've written songs about that before - see "Clove Smoke Catharsis.") Or maybe they committed suicide. Or, again, maybe it's not someone a band member knew personally and it's just in reference to the "live fast/die young" attitude in general. And look at the parts of the video where Davey's shouting at the audience, kinda Hitler-style. It's almost like he's some idol who commands their devotion, like Vicious and Cobain and such, you know? Find some way to incorporate the 336/7 -- rabbits -- no resurrection thing and I think you've got it down. I think pierrot show nailed the bulk of it. |

It's very Sing the Sorrow-ish in the odd mixture of extremely dark lyrics with a pleasant, driving, and upbeat melody that somehow seems to make the lyrics themselves seem even darker and more haunting. I like, very much. Also, I've criticized people in the past for finding Christian imagery in AFI songs, as it usually seems to be a bit of a stretch, but this one... "With just a look they shook, And heavens bowed before him. Simply a look can break your heart. The stars that pierced the sky He left them all behind We're left to wonder why He left us all behind ... Dreams of his crash won't pass Or how they all adored him Beauty will last when spiraled down The stars that mistify He left them all behind And now his children cry He left us all behind." Jesus, much? I don't think it's actually referring to Jesus, per se, but it's definitely using the imagery to make some kind of point. |

I'd be wary about trying to find Javey stuff in any of the songs, MidnightEye. Nothing against it (more power to them if it's true, I think it'd be great) but even if it is (which I'm not gonna speculate on since it doesn't really matter) I just don't think they'd make it a part of the band. Remember Hunter and Adam are part of it, too. And unless you're implying something really kinky... ^^ Oh, and I gotta give this one to discarnate. As soon as he pointed out that allegory, everything just sort of fell into place, and I understood it a great deal more. Though I still don't get the whole, "Jade, Hunter and Adam EXPLODE!" thing. I know a few people who are thoroughly confused by that. ^^;; |

| AFI – ...But Home Is Nowhere Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Omg, Manxbass, that's amazing. For about 6 months after I got this album it never left my discman, as I was trying to figure out what it meant. I just knew the album had to be taken as a whole, and not just a group of individual songs. And I figured a clue to that was The Leaving Song Part 2 coming before The Leaving Song, and figured that The Leaving Song Part 2 was probably the end, even though it's at the beginning. I wracked my brain trying to figure it all out but I never could, partly because I never had anyone to discuss it with. But that was EXTREMELY enlightening. Thank you for sharing all of that. Wow... I'll never look at this album the same way again. | |
