| Arctic Monkeys – Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured Lyrics

colourburst: he's referring to the cabs (or taxi's, i don't know what they call them in england). he's saying "ask the driver if we can have six people in one cab, otherwise we'll have to take two." typically, (in chicago, at least, where i'm from) cab drivers will let you have, tops, four people in the back and one in the front, if it's a car and not a van. in this case, say the lyrics, the driver says no. their having after-bar food, probably a buritto (again, in my experience), doesn't help, apparently, because he doesn't want them making a mess in the cab.
i love this song, because it - like so much of this album - so wonderfully sums up a night out in the city when you're in your early/mid-twenties. it's all so specific, with locations they reference and whatnot, but it's all still so universal. |

| Dear and the Headlights – Talk About Lyrics

He's able to cram so many syllables into each line, it's almost ridiculous. I love how it just keeps going forward, kinda gets that manic feeling the lyrics seem to be putting across to just SCREAM at you, especially the end. |

drugs. specifically, cocaine. "take a sip from the tube" = doing a line through a straw. "in the glass i look pretty" = seeing his reflection off the mirror the coke is on. "smirking the whole time jim spoke" = jim doesn't know that he's high. "haven't had a day alone since i met you" = addiction.
basically, he knows he's in trouble. he wants to get out of there, but he's addicted. he's clearly had some kind of intervention, with his mom and the cops and whatnot, and now he's trying to keep it all a secret. |

| The Format – I'm Actual Lyrics

i think all of the "can we take the next hour and talk about me" is like a therapy thing. he's got an hour session (roughly the length of the album, and this song is pretty much the start of it), and he's going to let it all out there. he's using the album as therapy.
and it's a pretty clear plant metaphor, like a lot of people above me have said. on a windowsill to get sunlight, marked the door for the growth of the whole thing, but then the chick goes off to find better "sunlight" to get away from his "shade". shit went south. simple as that.
and then end: "it's time i accept the fact that you on your back have buried the past" or something like that. she's with some new guy (the brighter sunlight), and he's got to deal with it. |

i agree with some of the people before me; i think he just went through a break-up and whatnot (that's why he's done with writing her songs and he's drinking alone in parking garages and whatnot) and his friends are saying things like "it'll be okay" and "she'll be back" and all that, just to make him feel better. they're lying to help him pull through. |

i love how the other instruments come in as he cues them in the lyrics. and this is just such a great song; he just needs the music, he needs his band mates, his friends, his wife, and he'll be alright. |

| Jason Mraz – Did You Get My Message? Lyrics
| 17 years ago

estranged lovers or friends, maybe after a break up, one calls the other and leaves a message saying "hey, i'm sorry" but never gets a call back. just that paranoid "why haven't you called back?!" going on. fantastic song, i love how their voices play off of each other. |

| Jason Mraz – Please Don't Tell Her Lyrics

i always thought he says "guitar" because there's that little guitar slide right before the song starts.
anyway, i think the whole time he's trying to give the impression that he doesn't miss the girl, that he's not hurt, when he really is. there's lines about reverse psychology, and lines about how, after all the shit, he still cares enough to be singing about it. he's trying to act like he doesn't care, play the tough guy, hoping that she'll realize she misses him then, when he's not in her face with how much he wants her back. |

| Say Anything – Goodbye Young Tutor, You've Now Outgrown Me Lyrics

he writes plenty of cheesy songs, hardpack. look back at all the old stuff, it's pretty much all cheesy stuff. homeboy wrote a song called "sappy", for christ's sake.
this is a great song, though. like everyone's been saying, pretty straight forward. i really dig the lines about when they met at his favorite band's show, but he wasn't paying attention to the show, just to her. that's just great, i really like that for some reason. |

playing off of what dendrite said, because i agree with him/her for the most part;
The man in the hole has carried away the moonlight
Cupped in his hands, a dime on the water
He's a patient man,
As his careful stepping shows
the dime = the girl ("a perfect 10") and he's (the man in the hole) got her now, literally, in the palm of his hand. |

| Hey Mercedes – Que Shiraz Lyrics

i, too, emailed bob once about this and he said it was a play on "que sera", and that he used shiraz because "it fits the song and it's tastey" or something along those lines.
i think he sings "que sera", though, because the song's about someone not trying to make something work, or not making an effort in a relationship, and he's just sick of trying, almost. just like "whatever, what will be will be."
also, the new jersey line is one of my favorites ever.
and the colorbars thing is about like the end of a movie, or when a tv station stops broadcasting and they just run colorbars. it's the end of something, when nothing else is happening. |

| Bright Eyes – You Will. You? Will. You? Will. You? Will. Lyrics

i love how it sounds like he's saying both "you will" and "will you" near the end. it's like hope and uncertainty at the same time, much like the title. and sometimes i think this song is about jesus. "if you don't (return) then this book's all lies). the bible? i like it as a love song more. |

i always thought that "11 to your 7" meant like, time zones. it's 11 where i am, but it's 7 where you are. that kind of thing. i guess i was wrong. |

| The Postal Service – The District Sleeps Alone Tonight Lyrics

i always took this song as being about a divorce. the "smeared black ink" is that which was signed on the divorce papers, the "last demands" are whatever's being divided up or whatever. he's obviously upset, he wants to cry, but he's in public so he doesn't, a la the line "the only thing keeping me dry is where i am." he sees that he screwed up, he sees that he was "the one worth leaving." he's visiting, apparently in DC, to sign the papers and finalize the whole thing. this same idea of "i screwed up, i can see that now" shows up throughout the album, in songs like "clark gable" and especially in "nothing better". |

the words are "be my bait". read the whole line: "come and seal my fate, marie. just pretend that you want me and be my bait". the songs about going with someone to get someone else jealous. also, i'm pretty sure the words are "settle baby, you are not the sun" - like "the world doesn't revolve around you". |
