I felt scared about getting married for a while now, because of the routine stuff. Then I heard this song and it just kind of put it into words (like Conor always does with feelings and thoughts I can't describe) and I realized that yeah, it's really common and I want to avoid it. It's all really sad.
But that was the Bright Eyes side of Conor talking in the song. It has strong Desa parts (clearly), talking about money and how it took precidence.
It seems like in this song, the wife knows she fucked stuff up by her wanting and wanting, and he worked to get her it and kind of lost his soul to the money, all for her, and she feels bad but still blames him. And now it's too late to go back, so she'll just keep wanting and taking, and that's all they'll ever amount to.
It's kind of weird, they switched places. She started out wanting money, then wanted love. He started out giving her love, and then only gave her money. And now neither of them can go back.
Also, the beginning reminds me of The Lion King. At first I thought it was a crazy Desa cover of 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight.' |

the comparison of her to her mother seems to me like her mother is gone....dead, or what seems likely in this situation, she ran off somewhere. just the way he says " you look like your mother" reminds me of in movies and books when the kid's long lost family is telling them how much they look like their parents. okay i suppose that was a direct comparison to harry potter that i tried to cover up unsuccessfully, so i just came out and said it. |

i still think you guys are overevaluating the intro. i think it fits in with the song but...suicide bombing? huge mechanical failure...thats what it was. the pilot was apologizing....nothing happened that anybody was to blame for or that could have been prevented. it just has to do with death....and about how nobody wants to die, but you gotta and it might not be all that bad. same message as the song. |

Emo is a sub-genre of punk. Is Bright Eyes punk? Nope, it suuuure isn't. Conor Oberst writes emotional lyrics, but it isn't at all like emo music. The style is totally different. And if you compare it to emo, the lyrics aren't really like emo. I'd say Bright Eyes is more just the simplest definition of a song with lyrics: poetry put to music. Beautiful words and beautiful sound. It can't be classified, because there really isn't anything out there that is very similar to it, and other things like it can't be classified. If there isn't a name for it, I say we pool our thoughts and invent one.
Oh and by the way...screenwrite, don't let it piss you off so bad when people mis-genre music. They don't know. But if they're just idiots who don't know....well then go and hate them. Or, as in your example, those who call Good Charlotte punk. Those people are dumbasses too.....heeheehee. |

how do you mean, what the beginnings about? it just fits in with his tendency to put lengthy, non musical intros on his cds. i love it! the story is so wonderful. i especially love how it seems like hes just making it all up on the spot, whether or not he is. 'happy birthday darling!'.

i think this song is a little sad. not the song itself, but the point of views: a girl too sad to give a fuck....a boy so drunk he doesnt talk. these arent happy, sexy people. they are hopelessly lost people, and i cant help but feel bad. love's an excuse to get hurt and to hurt -- why love somebody....lets just fuck and be done with it. do you like to hurt? i do i do -- i see this in the sexual meaning. kind of a tangent from actually talking about love to talking about sex. just the way he sings it, it gets louder. good song, though. i like the intro. |

ok...i just read the rest of the posts. i agree that the song is divided into three parts. up through "such proper language for acts so cruel" is from Amy's point of view, the dialogue up through "couldn't you" is her father's (clearly), and after that would be the narrator, feeling terrible that he can't help...'We're all trying to be pure, but it isn't a very easy this well is it to do?" he's trying to be good and help her, but it isn't working. she's trying to live, but her life is too messed up. her dad's trying to be a gentle loving dad, but he has sex with his daughters...and that gets in the way. |
