| it's about abortion. read it closely. | |
| Le Tigre – Deceptacon Lyrics | 20 years ago |

i don't think that anyone has addressed the pretty sexual lyrics yet. while i agree that this song could be a reflection of their frustration with being viewed as a "chick band" as someone else suggested, i think it could also be about being a guy's sex toy and staying with him out of boredom. (i take you home now watch me get you hot...) even though this particular song screams "angry feminist" and plays into the very negative stereotype that have been placed on feminists, precipitate is absolutely right...feminism advocates giving ALL people the space and respect that they need to be and become who they are / can be. it's not about women anymore, it concerns EVERYONE. (even kurt cobain was a self-proclaimed feminist) |

| Polaris – Hey Sandy Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
i always thought that the line was, "hey smilin strange, you lookin happily deranged can you sell the shroom babe? or have you hit your target yet?" sandy is a drug dealer who gets it in the end. this fits in with the rest of the song, "four feet away, end of speech is the end of the day." sandy is busted and she's being questioned on the stand. "we was only funnin' but guiltily i thought you had it comin." obviously the singer feels badly because he's saw this coming the whole time but didn't do anything. just a thought. maybe it's just gibberish. no doubt pete and pete is amazing no matter what the lyrics are. |

| The Beatles – Polythene Pam Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
love the last lines, "get a dose of jer in jackboots and kilt she's killer diller when she's dressed to the hilt. she's the kind of a girl that makes the New of the World Yes you could say she was attractively built." its amazing that four poor, uneducated kids from liverpool could make so many comments on and subtle references to history and socioeconomics. the "News of the World" is just one in a million. |

| The White Stripes – Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
i think jack is poking fun at this girl. every adolescent at some point has had this attitude, "no one can possibly understand me. no one has ever felt the way i do. no one or nothing can help me now." this girl is just going through that stage. she refuses to take her "medicine" because she's convinced herself that she's without hope but jack mocks that she's merely "allergic to a well familiar name." it's not that she can't be helped, its that she doesn't want to be helped because that will make her just like all of the other pill poppers out there. even though the subject of this song is the girl, jack also mocks modern medicine. there are drugs for everything and merely "the name upon the bottle" will determine what it can do for you. i agree with lillybart--the line "give me sugar pill and watch me just rattle" is definitely in reference to the placebo effect. so much sarcasm. gotta love it. |

| Kings of Leon – Dusty Lyrics | 21 years ago |

this reminds me of that pat benatar lyric (i thin it's pat benatar) "i need a lover that won't drive me crazy. someone to thrill me, and then go away." he wants passion without the risk of getting hurt. haha, don't we all? |

| Kings of Leon – Happy Alone Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
i LOVE the line, "all wrapped up in being 19." i'm 19 and i feel like its the age in which people are constantly coming in and out of your life. he's on the road, "on his own" but every once in a while he'll show up on this girl's street back home. the followills pinpoint that feeling of coming and going so perfectly. this is such a great song to drive to too. |

| Kings of Leon – Molly's Chambers Lyrics | 21 years ago |

agreed. she's a total tease. as soon as she "lets you in" she disappears. the only thing to miss is her memory. "Molly's Chambers" is a perfect title. |

| Kings of Leon – California Waiting Lyrics | 21 years ago |

i agree. kings of leon aren't getting their fair share of attention here. i'm kind of baffled by the lyrics too. he's laying with this "mona lisa," most likely a really complicated girl, or a girl who's just stoic and unemotional. "Crimson and Clover" could be in reference to any song that's playing in the background because the phrase is in so many other songs. i think that he's finally got the girl that he wanted but now he realizes that it's not what he thought it would be. he asks for his lonely life back because he loves the thought of missing this girl more than the actual girl in the flesh. |

| The Strokes – Reptilia Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
definitely the equivalent to "modern age" on "is this it" but the guitar solo is even more crazy and dramatic. one thing i love about julian is his use of dialogue in songs. so much is going on--the men talk to the woman at the bar, the woman talks to the guy in the song, the guy talks back to the woman, the woman talks to the men in the bar--there's so much talking going on between everyone but it's always perfectly clear who is talking to whom. julian subtly switches voices in a lot of his songs and everytime it just works. i agree with python, the woman that julian sings about is probably the same woman from "whatever happened" (they both wanna be admired). it seems like this guy is head over heels for this girl but he realizes that she'd rather be admired by everyone than be in a meaningful relationship. the girl is bored with her present relationship ("you sound so sleepy") and upon realizing this, he goes off the deep end. (he looks in the mirror and tells himself that this world is "not for him"). gotta love the lines, "our lives are changing lanes, you ran me off the road." at this point he just wants to get out. he sees this desperate need to leave, but she remains behind, ("this room is on fire, she's fixing her hair"). i can't really figure out the meaning of the title, "reptilia." a reptilia is a cage for reptiles, so maybe it has to do with feeling trapped and needing to escape. any other ideas? |

| The Strokes – Barely Legal Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
i think it's about a guy who's just burnt out despite the fact that he's young. he's played by the rules all of his life (in never taking any short cuts) but now he's knowingly "running out of luck" and doing everything he can get away with before it all comes to a crashing hault. i agree with pheav--he can't make sense of his own life so he thinks that having sex with this girl will some how make it all better. it seems like he and this girl arent exactly strangers though. they have an off and on relationship ("together AGAIN like the beginning"). when they were young and barely legal they pulled a lot of shit ("the things we did, the things you hide, for the record its between you and i") but all of it is their secret. he's obviously conflicted--he wants the girl back just so he can be the one to "turn her down." he tells himself that she never brought anything to his life but then he realizes that he wanted her anyway. he's confused and wants it all. the barely legal singer struggles in an adult world. all he wants to do is misbehave and be with this girl even though they aren't meant for eachother. he's lazy and regrets not "working harder" but continues with this way of life. i still dont get the trenchcoat reference though. any thoughts? it IS an awesome line. |

| The Strokes – New York City Cops Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
i completely agree boomerstyle. the album was released so shortly after 9/11 that there was no way the strokes could leave the song on the album. despite the fact that people are "overly sensitive" about the terrorist attacks, the album would have been received differently had they left this song on "is this it." it was a good move to leave it out, even though this is one of my favorite strokes songs (which is saying a lot). i've always thought that the opening lines were, "here in the streets of american nights" but i could be wrong. julian's voice is appropriately scratchy in the opening. the unclear vocals contribute to the sense of confusion that pervades the song. anyway, i think that this song needs some more interpretation. i don't think that this song is about a prostitute. julian finds himself in this girl's appartment in NYC late in the night. he's "studied all the rules" and he knows that he shouldn't be there but this night is particularly "fucking strange." we've all had those crazy moments at one point or another when we ask ourselves, "what the hell am i dong here?" you have every reason to get up and leave but for whatever reason you have to stay and see how it all plays out. this is one of those moments for julian. if you listen closely, you realize that it's not julian who's saying that new york city cops arent smart, it's this crazy girl nina. she's evidently doing something illegal--maybe she's prostituting herself, but my guess is it involves drugs--and while a paranoid julian has his doubts about her dealings, nina foolishly believes that she can do no wrong. her answer to everything is "new york city cops, they ain't so smart." the irony is that nina is actually the "not so smart" one because eventually the cops nail her. the lines, "they act like romans but they dress like turks" could apply to the cops themselves but i think they refer to nina (or girls like nina). it's nina who's the real threat to julian, not the cops. he has to leave her but he just can't will himself to go. i think the lines, "darling i'm somewhere in between" sum up the sentiment of the song entirely. it's about finding yourself between day and night. it's about the indecision you face upon realizing that you're at some girl's apartment at 3am. it's about purposely doing the wrong thing just for the sake of obtaining a better story. it's about limbo. god, i love the strokes. |
