I think that DangerBird's interpretation holds the key to this song, that being that he is trying to paint a romantic (in the non-love non-sexual sense of the word) picture of this woman. I think like most songs it can be interpeted so many ways. However I always imagine the following (I don't think it is nescassarily what's intended though):
The protagonist is lying in bed staring at his lover whilst she stares out the window. He is thinking how he will always love her more than she loves him ("Your loyalty is not to me but to the stars above"). Because of how much he loves her he feels like she is a bad habit. To me "One more cup of coffee" represents the awareness that you are doing something for the last time, so I think he wants to give her up. However he knows this will hurt him terribly and he savours his last time with her ("One more cup of coffee 'fore I go / To the valley below").
The other two verses are the imigination of the protaganist. As he stares at her he starts to daydream about her and paints a romantic picture in his mind (e.g. 2nd verse is a princess, 3rd is about a simple but passionate and caring girl who knows more than she lets on). Of course how much of what he says about her is reality and how much is a romantic ideal we can't tell, but I think this reflects how he feels about her; that he's worried he can no longer seperate the two in his mind. |

I think that it's about putting up with bad stuff "I don't mind the weather, I've got scarves and caps and sweaters" because you think it's worth it, or that the problem will go away, but in the end, the problem is always going to be there, like the weather, and it is better to deal with it than to pretend nothing's wrong "I think that it's brainless to assume that making changes to your window's view will give a new perspective". |

It's about a plutonic relationship, and the knowledge that, seeing as they're such good friends with you, they'd be with you, if it weren't for the way you look. |

Great cover of a great song. Jeroba, you say this is originally a King Tubby song? I'm pretty sure that this was originally a Toots and the Maytals song. It's about him being falsely arrested. The Ball and Chain bit is about marriage. |

brilliant song. i think you can take this to be about any kind of unrequited love. whether it's the girl you can't get the courage to talk to, or the one who "just wants to be friends". personally i like to think of it as being the latter, but it can be interpreted either way. |

thanks for that vellocet, i always wondered what this song was about. what does the acdc bit mean? i always assumed it meant bi, but that doesn't fit with the rest of the song. |

great song! just wondering, does anyone know if the satellites and shooting stars line is a deliberate billy bragg reference ("i saw two shooting stars last night, i wished on them, but they were only satellites, it's wrong to wish on space hardware...")? |
