| Motion City Soundtrack – The Future Freaks Me Out Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I concur with DF Ash, the whole "call you on my cellular phone" thing is sort of like trying to force yourself to assimilate into this new era but it doesnt exactly feel right, because you wanna just be back as an angsty 80s child again. oh ps: rock steady was a song by 70s/80s rock band Bad Company. and as has been previously stated, there a ton of other 80s references juxtaposed with allusions to more modern culture strengthening the idea that all of a sudden the singer's grown up and he misses all the things he loved as a teenager and yeah basically this song kicks ass |

actually, i've heard that a large part of the album is about Eliott Smith-- accidntel deth, parts of does he love you, jim etc, it just is, and this of course. but, like, listen to blake sennet's voice (the guy vocals in all the rilo songs, in case you didn't know), and it sometimes sounds A LOT like elliott's. particularly in this song, and rest of my life (that one is actually really eerie). jenny has often considered smith a muse, and it shows in a lot of rilo's music, in my opinion. ...just something i thought was interesting. |

the irish/heiress bit: well, he's irish. self explanatory. and heiress...his parents are famous. his father loudon wainright III was incredibly famous in his time and also very rich. so he's an heir in that sense. but heirESS because let's face it, he's kinda girly :-) |

always. it means there's always going to be something between them. that's what the phantom is, the passion and love between them. and she sees it but, he doesn't. classic case of you don't see what's right in front of you. |

| The Shins – Fighting In A Sack Lyrics | 20 years ago |

Fighting in a Sack...I get the image of someone trying to break free from "the sack", aka trying to understand life and relgion, but not breaking free, and wearing themselves out fighting a losing battle. Living life itself is difficult. Why interpret it and further complicate things? |

I have to wonder why Mercer is so cynical? It seems to me like he has extreme commitment issues. It's like, he's setting himself up for failure in every relationship he gets into. He sees something wrong and then panicks and has to break up with the girl. Also, "Until this turn in my head, I let you stay and you paid no rent...that's enough sitting on the fence for fear of breaking dams" seems a little out of place. It sounds like she's been undeserving of his love, and he finally realizes it. But that isn't what the song is about. What else...hmm..."you want to fight for this live but honey you cannot wrestle a dove"...again with the apathy. James Mercer clearly is/wants to be an apathetic, "don't get worked up" kind of person. So, when the girl is busy saying "come on, we can make it work if we try", he's saying back, " I don't really have the will to put in that effort." "the train is getting way too loud" is him saying "shit, this is getting too serious, i have to leave before i get myself into deep" i feel bad for the girl actually. |

if you read this interview with james mercer (http://www.gigwise.com/contents.asp?contentid=2377) , it's pretty evident that the underlining theme of most of the songs on this album is that people need to stop overanalyzing everything, and just live life, and stop worrying about the technical stuff. Also clear is that Mercer is a big fan of apathy. In this way, I think the song means that while there are all these philosophies (both religious and not) are out there to try and make sense of life, people should stop trying to make sense of things and just live. Although he admires these people for their interpretations of life, he acknowledges that he doesn't have the will or time to do it himself. He also says "I value them but I won't cry every time one's wiped out", meaning that he respects these people for their thoughts but that their theories don't rule his life. Life gets complicated when you interpret it too much. Mercer is very consistent in his beliefs. I like that. |
