Charles Van Doren was a contestant on a game show who was allowed to cheat by the game show hosts to improve ratings, and was eventually exposed. Rancid use him as a fitting metaphor for urban alieantion and media mendacity in this excellent song that makes good use of Matt's growling voice. |

People often cite this song when trying to argue that Rancid contradicted themselves by selling out, but the section of the song about the bus fare I think is Tim trying to say that he neeeds more money, and "Oh, what the papers say, caught up in disarray" refers to the fans putting Rancid down and thinking that they've sold out, |
