"Dan told me that he says "This is a song I wrote about my brother" at the beginning. He said it while they were recording but they decided to leave it in anyway."
That was a fake Dan. Really!
It was explained on their website. It wasn't realy Dan, and Thats not what he says. Its actually Matt, and he says something to the effect of "This is the wrong song, but whatever." The lyric cues were wrong, so it Matt said that into the mic. They kept it in for some reason. |

Billie Joe himself said that he wrote this song after going through a friend's Cure collection and seeing the song "1,000 Hours." He then wrote this song. He also called it the sappiest song he'd ever worte, and I tend to agree with him. |

I think this song is a collective shout of all the Jesus' of Suburbia. All of them are shouting, wanting to know what they are waiting for. Its really the lament of all of us, espcially the current generation. We have nothing to live of die for. Thats why the song "St. Jimmy" directly follows this song. Jimmy is the savior. He's come to save the jesus' from themselves. He's come to wake up the population, to tell them that life could be better than this. |

On the issue of "Rock and Roll Girlfriend", I think its a letter to Saint Jimmy from one of his diciples thats denouncing Jimmy's views. The letter depicts all the Rock N' Roll excesses that Jimmy was so clearly against. The letter was probably recived posthumusly, explaining why its placed later in the song.
Also, I think that Jesus is depicted as the "everyman" in America, and he could be anybody. I think that in the end, Jimmy saw no difference between himself and Jesus. He killed himself because his rebellion is futile, and everyone just regresses to the Idiot America. |
