I didn't mean to criticize yours, but I've spent a bit of time editing the song in a sound editor to try and hear the words correctly (and I'm still not 100% sure on some of the differences between our versions). Examples being the "Like twenty miles of catacombs" part and the beginning "Like a lit cigarette to your lips when it fit." The second line, however, "Like the lungs..." is correct. Anyway, great song. |

I think the lyrics are more like this... Like a lit cigarette to your lips when it fit. Like the lung to your heart that it loaths 'cause it wasn't always broke. Holding on so long for something that it loves. Like the hole in the yard that we dug so far. Then when you left for so long and forgot 'cause the grass had grown so tall. Erasing all we thought and when I get close I fall. You say life has got you down. Steady course we're breaking out. This isn't what you thought it was. I should have known this from the start. Like twenty miles of catacombs. And now you're with me in my heart. Looking on so far, saying "There, I've got you now." It's the goals in your mind that you left behind. From the glass is a crutch on the path to always losing touch. If you blur it just enough you might see what you want. Now the dirt from the yard blew away so far. My kids and I would incorrectly sing the lyrics to Old Crow Medicine Show's "New Virginia Creeper" which states "Down among the Mountain Laurel, I'm a gonna meetcha". We would sing "Down among the Mountain Loralai I'm gonna meetcha." My wife was pregnant with our third child and we thought if it was a girl we'd use the name. But, his name is Jerzy. | I'm fairly certain he says "In a dream about my whole life." A few reasons. I've dissected the song multiple times, watched live videos, and have heard studio recorded acoustic versions... all of which do little to clarify this issue. This leaves one to analyze which one goes better with the song (or more accurately, which word is more likely to have been used by the Brian Fallon). The first part of the chorus refers to an ex-wife and being left, the second part of the chorus begins with the same thing... "And I saw tail lights, last night..." Essentially, it's about the same thing but in the first part of the chorus he already mentioned his ex-wife leaving him, an event which was part of his old life. It makes a lot more sense, and works much better for him to say "whole life." Instead of remembering on being left and having awful heart ache it applies the memory of "tail lights, last night" (being left alone) to his past, present, and likely future. Also, describing an "old life" is really not necessary because he does not imply any changes or changing to draw a clear distinction between what would be his "old life" and a "new life." Hope that makes sense, it's just my two cents. | |

| Yes, I noticed this song name and had to listen to (as an English grad student) and "Porphyria's Lover" being one of my all time favorite poems as well as the first poem I ever memorized (granted it's quite long). No offense to the song or the band but it really doesn't do the poem justice in the least. | |

| I thought it was "old life" for sure as well... but then I started listening to it more and hearing live versions and using context clues and now I believe it to be "whole life." In the beginning of the chorus he is talking about his old life already... "tail lights last night in a dream about my first wife..." It only follows that the summary chorus would not just rephrase the past but encapsulate his entire life. That's just my opinion. | |
