The album, 13th Step is mainly about addictions, like drugs, alcohol from different perspectives. I think I remember something said about the 12 steps of recovery or something like that, which is why it's called the 13th Step. Well anyway, this song seems to be about a guy who has hurt someone, more than likely ended up end a death, and he lives, but he doesn't want to admit that he did it, that he was responsible. He wants to think that he is innocent, when he isn't. Overall, a great song. |

To me, the song Lateralus has really no single meaning, but it's more of a gateway to realizing the entire meaning of the album. Lateralus has a lot of hidden things that when i first bought it, i never realized it had. Lateralus is more of a key to unlocking it. Somebody said something about the time signature's being 9/8,8/8,7/8 = 987 = 19th term in the Fibonacci sequence.... Not only that, but the syllabols of the first verse, 1,1,2,3,5,8... etc... are the first numbers of the same sequence (not Pascal's triangle). The entire song focuses around spirals, and if you are really bored, you can start fooling around with putting the tracks in a linear order on paper and then trying to pair them with spirals... start with Parabol, Parabola... and keep pairing numbers that equal 13... as follows.. 6,7,5,8,4,9,13,1,12,2,11,3,10 13 is kind of an intermission... and it breaks the spiral... as said in the song Lateralus "Spiral out, keep going..." The freaky thing is that if you listen closely and take out pauses between the song... (dont use MP3's as they dont have good sound quality, but use the CD itself), every song will connect... it's freaky... as Schism ends with that double bass and you can tell Ticks and Leeches follows that same pattern and then as ticks and Leeches flows into Mantra... it almost sounds like dry heaves... or something... Most of you should hear it for yourself. I got most of my info on this from google searches of ppl who have done it themselves... if you wanna know more search for "The Lateralus Prophecy" To conclude, the entire album seems to be talking to us about our spiritual side... or the other side of us (Laterus-Us), or at least that's what it means to me. |
