Spoon – The Beast and Dragon, Adored Lyrics

This seems like a plea to the muse to return. The speaker's bummed that he can't recreate the feelings he used to have about music. Then there's a transistion "That's when I knew, knew they never got you". He knows the original feeling of joy and authenticity "don't come cheap" and inspiration doesn't always flow like a tap. One has to work for the deep, genuine feeling of music ("I got a feeling, it didn't come free"). There's a lot of truth in this song. |

I'm having trouble interpreting the lyric "never pay the Reaper in love only." I think it might be advice to not let death take only loved ones, so that the burdun of grief isn't too great, but I'm open to other interpretations. |

Great Big Sea – Recruiting Sargeant Lyrics

This is the story of the Blue Puttees, the first Newfoundland division sent into WWI. They were basically mown down with artillery and machine gun when they went "over the top" at the Battle of the Somme. Frontal assaults were generally ineffective and costly in the trench warfare practiced in the Great War, and 733 out of 801 Newfoundlanders did not answer the roll call the next day, making it the hardest hit regiment. This was of course devasting for Newfoundland, and most were regreting the talk of glory that recruiters put forward. |
