COG – Bitter Pills Lyrics 17 years ago
"Turned my back on the drama
And ostracised my karma
I threw away all my armour
Trying to find out who I was before"

For some reason, I just love the lyrics here. I went to their gig at the Uni of Canberra last night, and they finished with this song. Was a completely unexpected way to close the show, but sounded so incredible live.

COG – Say Your Last Goodbye Lyrics 17 years ago
Correct lyrics, from the CD insert:
-------------------------------------

Say your last goodbye
What we were has died
Time to start again
Let the end begin

So alone, cutting ties
On our own and there's nothing left to say
As we go our seperate ways
Say your last goodbye

Say to me the madness
Is over, it's over
Say to me, remind me
It's over, it's over

Even though we tried
Leave it all behind

So alone, cutting ties
On our own, and there's no one left to blame
As we go our seperate ways
Say your last goodbye

Say to me the madness
Is over, it's over
Say to me, remind me
It's over, it's over

No fantasy, we're ending it all
So out of phase, both wanting more
No subtleties, we're hitting brick walls
This bitter taste, as we fall

Say to me the madness
Is over, it's over
Say to me, remind me
It's over, it's over
Say to me the madness
Is over, it's over

Tool – 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2) Lyrics 19 years ago
Trexor, the fact of the matter wasn't based on your opinion, it was based on the fact that you gave a totally biased opinion towards the entire album without giving us a reasonable explanation behind why you thought so. I checked through the lyrics to the songs off 10,000 Days, and in all of them, there was a comment by you that gave absolutely no credibility or intelligence into why you disliked them. Having said that, your opinions can be vented here, and everyone should take them as they are. There's no one who can stop you. But if you don't like the songs, give reasonable examples as to why you don't like it, likewise if you do enjoy it, state why.

To be honest, I find myself listening to "Right In Two" more than any track at the moment, even Vicarious, Jambi, The Pot or Rosetta Stoned. The lyrics don't have to be the biggest point of Tool songs, especially if they're from Maynard's viewpoint of things. As a budding songwriter, I find it difficult to come up with the words for certain feelings or situations, and though I may be wrong, I feel Maynard used lyrics that suited the song really well and were intellectual in their own right. As well as this, the music was brilliant (I love the 9/4 time signature), and reminded me a lot of The Patient. It is mellow-ish, sure, but it caught my attention when it got down into the meat and potatoes of things. Maybe this should've gone in the "Right In Two" post, but whatever.

The bottom line is that 10,000 Days is a Tool album that if given the chance can be enjoyed immensely. Certains things about it you may hate, certain things about it you may like, just so long as you point out opinions that don't resort to blatant bashing of the songs then your opinions will be valid.

I'll vouch for you stormin_norman. I too got the album, along with a mate. I like this song, and I agree with the angel remarks. Humans may think highly of themselves, but deep down, we're all animals.

Superheist – Step Back Lyrics 20 years ago
Superheist have always been a driving force in Australian music, and this song is without a doubt one of the best ones off The Prize Recruit. Unsure as to the meaning behind, but I think it might have something to do with fame.

Staind – Falling Down Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree, this is probably my favourite song off 14SOG. I dunno why, it's just something about the chorus that attracts me. Either way, the song is about karma, how once you abandon the ones close to you for a shot at something bigger, it ends up coming back to haunt you.

Green Day – Holiday Lyrics 20 years ago
I can't believe I managed to sit my ass through reading all of the comments to this song (took me about an hour), but I'm sure glad I did, because I want to add some of my points in to the song. If you don't want to read a very long rant, my advice: skip this.

Ok, first of all, I'm in agreeance with the anti-war theme. It seems definate that Armstrong sees the current war in Iraq as something in close relation to that of the end of the world. It is arguable that the war being fought has had massive implications and consequences with the rest of the world and has elevated beyond that of the 9/11 attacks. Coming from Australia, I've witnessed the spate of suicide bombings all over the world, from the London Bombings to the two Bali Bombings (almost at least one year after one another).

Now if indeed the bombings are all related back to the same religious group that were responsible for the 9/11 attacks, then without a doubt we are seeing the makings of a World War 3. It may or may not hold massive implications for a certain religious sect or group, but from all the evidence that has been amassed, all the recent bombings and "terrorist" activities have in some way or another been tied back to Muslim extremists. How this group can go about destroying life or "infidels" for the praise of their own religion is beyond me.

Having said this, I am neutral to the whole Iraq war. Yes, the war was started to get back at Osama Bin Laden for 9/11, but eventually, all interest was lost and moved onto Iraq. So we start in Afghanistan and move onto the bigger problems in Iraq, am I right? Sounds like a hell of a transition to me... Either way, the war is claiming to eliminate the threat of global terror, which seems highly inachievable. Excuse me if you've read this far and understand nothing, it's 1:38am here and I'm tired as hell, so much of this would seem somewhat contradictory. I'll be amazed if it's even understandable.

So my idea of holiday is that the current war is the end of the world. We've screwed up big time. First of all, the first few lines show us an exaggerated comparison of the war to the state of the world. The Iraq War = Armageddon. Because this war has started, the rest of the world has come to suffer due to the alliances and enemies that have been made through the war's course. Taking a look at Australia, we are alligned very closely to USA, and because of this, we seem to be a very possible target for a future attack. If the Bali Bombings were anything to go by, they would have been a warning to us. Furthermore, the second half of the first verse comments on the futility of protesting. Even with the largest known protesting of the war in history, it had still gone ahead. The company (protestors) lost the war (trying to get their soldiers back home).

The chorus seems to sing to me that we are stuck in this war for the rest of our lives. There's no way we can get out of it, we'll just have to put up with the lies upon lies that we are fed through the media. This is what our life is going to be like, and "holiday" could be related to the fact that this is what life will be, life will be revolved around war, so we will just live around it. War will be our newfound means of getting away from it all. War will be just another day.

The second verse gives me the idea of propaganda -- the feeling that if we don't participate in this war we will suffer from it. The protestor crossing the line is the man who realises that the war is the only way that anything can be achieved. In this, we also get a sense of loss. I do agree with Infy1 with the use of the flag, and I think it has more to do with silencing the critics and giving the families of deceased soldiers false pride. We get all this talk of a soldier being a "national hero"... A more practical term would be an expenditure, because the American army loses a number of men in the war each day, and there doesn't seem to have been any momentum shift within the war.

As for the bridge, I just get the feeling of powermongers exerting their authority over smaller nations. If you're not with the superpowers of the world, you're against them, take the case of America in retaliation to Al Qaeda. Because they attacked America on their native soil, America retaliated and so those who don't agree with their policies of peace are killed.

I don't know... To me, the song, with the Iraq War tells me of the current state of the world. The indifferences of man are too great to ever have any hope of achieving any form of peace with an opposing nation. With the prospect of power comes the prospect of enemies who feel wrong-done by. And so where do we as humans fit in with all this? No matter who you are in this world, no matter what race, religion, or person you are, war's definate in life, and this is what our life has become dependant on. If this seems contradictory, confusing, a load of shit blah blah blah, feel free to comment. Keep in mind I was tired when I typed this up and most likely had no idea what I was on about. A few alcoholic beverages may or may not have helped proceedings either, but yeah... Interpretation's there from me to you.

The Killers – Somebody Told Me Lyrics 20 years ago
All this gender relationship stuff confuses me so much that I want to go cry in the shower... But I'm going with the most realistic interpretation that the "boyfriend" is a woman who dumped the singer for a woman, started by a rumour. So basically, she dumped him to become a lesbian.

Nothingface – Ether Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree it's about the Iraq War, but looking at the lyrics, I got the idea it can be tied back to the idea of anarchy and the generation gap, where a lot of depressed youths defy others and suppress their feelings. They feel that they were never and will never be wrong.

Other than that, I am in total agreeance it's about the Iraq War.

10 Years – Prey Lyrics 20 years ago
Surprised nobody has commented on this song. It's a very good 10 Years song in my opinion... As for the meaning behind it, I'm going to go out on a limb and give my idea of it being about war.

The first verse seems to give the idea of how he has been moulded into the image of a soldier ("One in the same", "I'm twisted in knots from hard work and strain").

The chorus may give an indication of mixed feelings -- anticipation, fear, enlightenment and acceptance. The soldier is afraid to be on the frontline, fighting in a war, afraid that death is ever so imminent, only now because he realises what it is like. However even through his realisation of what war is like, he doesn't care. He simply wants to do what he wants to do.

The second verse seems to describe the soldier's futility and how all the efforts he has put in seem to be in vain, how the hunter has become the hunted. Even through this, he is attempting to hold back his true feelings of fright to maintain his composure as a soldier.

As for the bridge, I feel this is simply the message that war is not the answer, that all nations need equality.

Foo Fighters – Best Of You Lyrics 20 years ago
Awesome FF song. I can somewhat relate to this song in the fact I'm too nice to a lot of people and it seems that everyone tends to take advantage of me, such as getting me to do stuff for them that I don't wanna do. To me, this song is about how we fall victim to the ones close to us and that people get the best of us.

A very nice song from Lloyd and his new album, this song seems to talk about a relationship that he thought was to last forever, but judging by the lyrics in the song, there was a fight that allowed reality to set in that not all relationships last forever.

Breaking Benjamin – Natural Life Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is one of my favourite BB songs too. I get the feeling that we run a course of being unnatural, that we are bothered by the natural life, living dying, being wrong, being right. On the outside we are natural to all else, but inside we feel unnatural when we come to terms with the truth.

Chill out House, it's hilarious reading some comments on this site. But I think the meaning of this song is pretty obvious, about drifting away from somebody who you thought you once loved and the love you thought you had for them dying out.

AFI – Silver And Cold Lyrics 20 years ago
I reckon this song to me is about murdering somebody close to the singer. He once was good, but an event turned him bitter and vengeful. Silver and cold could be talking about the weapon he used to kill the person close to him, and he takes in their sins for his own sin of anger. I think the second verse comes to understanding that what he had done was a mistake, and so he uses the weapon on himself. As for the bridge, I reckon he is talking about how he will live with the murder, but he only asks that it doesn't take a firm grip on his life, so he asks not to let his murderous urges overcome him, for fear of striking again at another person.

Tool – The Patient Lyrics 20 years ago
Obviously losing faith in the path we've been chosen. I do agree with the religious interpretations of the song, however, as in losing faith in God. What if we follow a religion, because we've been promised so many good things? What if the promises we have been given are never fulfilled? We keep on, because we are uncertain of our future. No matter how much we doubt the path we follow, there are those who keep their devotion, because they are patient and know that the promises they have been made will be fulfilled.

Tool – The Grudge Lyrics 20 years ago
Reading the comments, they do accurately show give meaning to the song, and it has been a pleasure to read them. I thought of another side to the lyrics and thought of them as a political view to the world, with governments holding power and order over people.

"Wear the grudge like a crown of negativity
Calculate what we will or will not tolerate
Desperate to control all and everything
Unable to forgive this scarlet letterman"

The governments stay concerned with their own world and play with people's beliefs that they are listening to their pleas and worries etc. They give order and plan what the people will accept and reject, in a bid to amass more power, and in doing so, civilization declines due to the corruption of the government.

"Clutch it like a cornerstone, otherwise it all comes down
Justify denials and grip 'em to the lonesome end
Cluth it like a cornerstone, otherwise it all comes down
Terrified of being wrong, ultimatum prison cell"

The governments hold on to their power carefully, fearful of it collapsing around them (anarchy?). They skate around questions and lie to the people, justifying their denials of certain things. They don't want to be proven wrong, or else they will lose the support of people.

"Saturn ascends, choose one or ten
Hang on or be humbled again"

Order begins to take place. Because of the order within the government's world we are oblivious to the outer world. We either go with our own world (hang on) or face the truth (humbled again).

"Saturn ascends
Comes round again
Saturn ascends, the one, the ten
Ignorant to the damage done"

Because of order within our world and what we see and want, we have become blinded by the quest for power and we don't see that what is a blessing for some is a curse for others.

"Defining, confining, sinking deeper
Controlling, defining and we're sinking deeper"

Control has been placed on the world, and with this, the people have become corrupted and made worse off.

"Saturn comes back around to show you everything
Lets you choose what you will, will not see and then
Drags you down like a stone or lifts you up again
Spits you out like a child, light and innocent"

With the order that has been placed, the people are lured into bigger and better promises which hope to make it easier for the people, but instead it makes them suffer a lot more in the long run.

That's pretty much my interpretation, but like so many others, it is bound to be wrong.
