David Bowie – Lady Stardust Lyrics 18 years ago
I've always thought (I just discovered the Ziggy Stardust album, and David Bowie for that matter) that this song was being sung by a fan of Ziggy, maybe someone who knew him before he got big. Since he's supposed to be bisexual, I see it as a guy that's in love with him, maybe even had a relationship with him, and he's thinking about Ziggy's first big show. Everything about it says that to me.

I don't know about this Marc Bolan stuff, because I don't know Bowie's history, but from a strictly "Ziggy Stardust is a concept album with a story" point of view, I think that this song reflects Ziggy Stardust leaving his past relationships to hit the road with the Spiders From Mars. I mean, it follows "It Ain't Easy", which sets up the idea that they're trying but it's hard, then "Lady Stardust" comes in and I see that as this narrator from Ziggy's hometown thinking about him, and then you have "Star", which would be Ziggy fully embracing this new persona and leaving the old behind.

But these are just my ideas, I might be trying to add to much cohesion to Bowie's work. I'm a writer myself, so I like things like this to have a structure.

Emery – Holding Out For A Hero Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, its a cover of an old 80's song that's featured in the film Foot Loose. However, I think we can take Emery's version from a more Christian perspective:

"Up where the mountains meet the heavens above,
Out where the lightning splits the sea
I would swear that there's someone somewhere watching me"

I could see that as being an allusion to Christ.

"He's like any kid in a small town,
They said he couldn't do it,
He knew he had to."

Nazareth was a small town-it was also Christ's home town.

The original is about wanting a man. I think that their version is kind of a joke, but it's possible that they're actually talking about holding fast to the faith that Christ is coming and they won't put their faith in something weaker than that.

Or maybe it's just one of the best covers I've ever heard and I'm putting way too much thought into this. One of the two.

The Byrds – He Was A Friend Of Mine Lyrics 20 years ago
Yeah, it's about JFK and I've heard Dylan had a song with the same title as well. Grateful Dead do as well, though the lyrics are very different. Cat Power has a song by the same title, and some of the lyrics are very similar, but I think it's kind of a half-cover or something. This is the only song by the Byrds that I really like, mostly because of its topic. It's really good, though.

mewithoutYou – Son of a Widow Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree with everything on the board, but I had a sort of 'revelation' about that the last line of the song.

"The son of the widow you raised from the dead - where did his soul go when he died again?"

Pre-Christ (according to Christian theology) souls went to a place called Sheol, where they waited until Christ came for them. Then, when He died, He went to Sheol and those that believed in Him went to Heaven while those that didn't went to Hell-just like we as living people do. Therefore, the soul of the boy that Jesus Christ ressurected came back from Sheol when he was ressurected. By asking where the boy's soul went when he died again, what's really being asked is if (after having an experience like that) if the kid followed Christ.

I don't know if that was really obvious and everyone knew it, but it's not on this board so I thought I'd say it anyway.

Haste the Day – Blue 42 Lyrics 21 years ago
I don't get what the title has to do with this song, but the song is pretty cool. Its just about turning away from the things of the world after accepting Christ as one's Saviour. Very nice.

Underoath – A Boy Brushed Red ... Living In Black And White Lyrics 21 years ago
I think this song is about a guy and a girl letting their emotions get the best of them and they let things go too far. Exceptionally awesome song to me because I've experienced exactly that...wel..kinda. Either way, this song is really great and I can't wait to get the CD. You can find this song on This Is Solid State Volume 5, too. Thats where I got it.
