Ani DiFranco – Present/Infant Lyrics 16 years ago
Sayna,

I can see what you mean, but I don't think this is what Ani is trying to say. I think the significance of her own insecurities really struck her when she looked at her innocent daughter and realized that she didn't want her daughter to grow up feeling bad about herself. Ani is saying that she has spent so much of her life buying into media's image of beauty, and she doesn't want her child to make that mistake. She's giving her daughter great advice:

don't let the sellers of stuff in power enough
to rob you of your grace
love is all over the place

In fact, the "love is all over the place/there's nothing wrong with your face" is sung almost like a lullaby. It's perfect!

I always wondered about the true meaning of this song...whose point of view she's writing from, and to whom? She likes to write from interesting perspectives, and it's always fun when she takes on different personas to tell their stories.

I think this is mother and child, or the other way around. My daughter's father (my ex husband) just passed away, and as I'm trying to figure out how to comfort her, this song has a very optimistic and hopeful tone to it.

"blood ties are only blood..." I am now surrounded by friends who are like family, here to fill the holes left after his death.

"If I kiss you where it's sore..." She knows a little kiss won't fix it, but she wants so badly to help that she offers the best way she knows how.

"If you never say your name out loud to anyone, they can never ever call you by it..." I always thought this line meant that if you don't go around broadcasting your problems, people won't have them to judge you by.

Ben Harper – Better Way Lyrics 19 years ago
oh my goodness, bohemianEagle...great use of my favorite kerouac quote!

i don't think this song was written to apply to a certain situation. this song is about a man who is idealistic about mankind as a whole. he is stating that despite the shit in the world, he refuses to give up and give in...he believes that he can change the world by starting with himself.

"what good is a cynic with no better plan" is my favorite line. he's saying that if we're going to bitch about the world, then we are only making it worse. to bring on change we need to take responsibility for ourselves and be the better person.

Anna Nalick – In My Head Lyrics 19 years ago
i think it's about having impossibly high expectations of someone...and having to call herself back to reality. that point when you can't get someone out of your head...and your imagination lets the person become more than the reality. for instance, a relationship where you ignore the bad habits.

"a god and whatever i want you to be." she's saying that she acknowledges that the person is not perfect but she wants to imagine it that way.

i agree with smashman that it could be someone she idolizes, perhaps someone famous. "should ever we meet on your side of the stereo..." that whole part, as well as "fall awake to the sound of my heart to your beat...love on repeat..." as though perhaps it's the writer of her favorite song(s) that inspired her...as her music is "melancholy and cool, kind of bitter sweet."

but on a personal level, i can relate to over-idolizing someone. i love this song.

Blue October – She's My Ride Home Lyrics 19 years ago
I (like most people) bought this CD for "hate me," but i have to say that this is perhaps the best song on the album.

This song to me is about escape. we can (and probably will) debate the mode and motive of escape that he is referring to...but i don't think it really matters.

"We drive to leave the past and clear the mind." how many of us do this? i know i do. there is nothing better than driving on a warm night...just to escape and feel better; that is what this song feels like to me. i think it's about a man asking a woman to trust him and just run away with him, against all odds.

i also have to wonder if it's a reference to drugs...maybe he's introduced her to something new...

anyone else have a take on this song? i'm not familiar with band's background...
