| Puscifer – The Undertaker (Renholder Mix) Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| It is about your average, run of the mill, sociopath. There's quite a few out there, emotional vampires, leeches. This isn't the only song I've heard from him that addresses this. Sorry he had to deal with it, but it's all what you do with it, and damn it makes for good music. | |
| Puscifer – Rev 22:20 Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| It seems not many people who comment on his lyrics have had a relationship with a female sociopath, the real demons and vampires actually among us. 50 bucks says there's one in his past. That one encounter ties so many of his songs together across the bands. I wonder if he's ever told the story in any sort of public arena other through his lyrics... oh well, time to go read about this Lilith chick... | |
| Puscifer – Momma Sed Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
Possible scenario: Boy meets girl. Over time, Boy develops deep, soul-mate connection (What Dreams May Come) with Girl. Girl likes it when Boy thinks that, it works for her. Girl gets bored and decides it's time to bail. Girl and Boy have major fall out. Girl crushes boy (infidelity) and then publicly begins assassinating boy's character (to justify leaving). Boy not sure how to handle things. Beat down, boy re-connects after a long time of rocky relationship (though love was never in doubt) for comfort, advice... Momma Sed this. Girl probably doesn't like Mom because of Momma's intuition. After some powerful reconnecting and listening to Mom, Boy decides not to keep trying to fend off the character assassination, defending his pride and falling into Girl's trap. Through this boy perhaps realizes that Girl is very likely a sociopath, and has no sense of remorse or guilt, other people agree with Boy after he points it out, it makes everything else make sense. Mom helps Boy find faith that the truth will find it's way through to those who need to hear it. Perhaps the gun at the end, after the storm passes is his chance to let the truth shine brightly; perhaps simply by releasing this song (or posting it on his facebook). Perhaps the gun is just the once uncertain victory that was won with faith, taking the high road, and taking it like a man. |

| Phil Collins – In The Air Tonight Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I too can't hear this song without seeing those miami palm trees whipping by at night. But lately, as I came to better understand the lyrics have imagined this. The music is sensual and the lyrics are cold and bitter. I see this song materializing for the first time as the cheated on person as sex with another for the first time. Death and rebirth type of feeling. | |

I hate it when songs get listed twice here. Wow, I haven't cried in years. I can only say that I may have, towards the middle of this song. Aside from another (best so far) display of this band to convey emotion with lyrics, cadence, melody, and rythm, it is truly, I believe, true with the esence of what the band and lyric writer stand for. Love. This is not a song of a deeper truth this is more about an experience and a fantasy trip of the mind. This is all about love. I'm sure that we will see a hundred posts about (once again) Maynard finding religion. Maynard has known religion. (That reminds me, I hope Zack doesn't find this lyric) This is a tribute drenched in LOVE to both her and the emotions, and thoughts he has had concerning her and the universe around her. And if the anti-this, anti-that, fans that don't see higher meaning think that this album and the "new"(bs) direction tool is heading is a dissapointment, all I can say is FINALLY! Get of the fucking bus and return your fucking tickets. I try to keep the things I believe in to a minimum, so that I can better experience... that being said, that leaves me the room to consider the possibilities... I personally haven't succomed to organized religion, but I have considered his mother's fundemental envangelicalist way of thinking. I have to believe I would think the same, given a person I loved and watched go through hell-on-earth. Even if I thought that her faith was too caught up in the details, distractions, and corruptions of some written words. "In the beginning there was love, after that you pretty close the book." Look him in the eye Look him in the eye and tell him.. "I never lived a lie, never took a life, But surely saved one Hallejullah, It's time for you to bring me home" -kind of shows him looking through her eyes. Love can drive us to view through others eyes. From my humble impression of Maynard (I stress, I don't presume to know and understand him, or anyone) I believe him to be the type that understand this and probably had no reservations about letting out this journey of the mind, its great therapy. She beleived so strong, he has criticized her, but he also loves her. I for one feel a little like I know the subject of the song, he describes her so clearly. Maybe he found the light...Maybe he's just patronizing her, but this isn't an angry sarcastic song so I doubt it. What an intimate human he is he shows us all again. Would you share your pain with the entire world? I said a lot but I don't think I said anything meaningful, I don't even think I got my point across. Someone will probably show up and say what I'm trying to say, in 4 words. |

The overall feel of the song reminds me of a funeral, especially the lead and rhythm guitar. I'm sure it was inspired by the echo-like repetition. Like thoughts of regret and remorse and sorrowful reminisce, unable to be pushed out of mind. The funeral comes to mind as if delivered by the ghost of Christmas yet to come. The song starts with a single piano-key note tapping (reminds me of that frustration involved with putting larger things into word sized containers). This singular tapping becomes more of a melody at this next point. The muffled bass seems to be hiding the true nature still of the message. The guitar riffs seem, to be inspired by that same frustration, at a different stage. The way that the last notes of each repetition hang reminds me of someone opening his mouth and words not yet able to come out... By the time the bass line picks up loud enough to be noticed and not felt (enter drums), a whole new life breathes in the song. It takes the frustration and transforms it. It has a real wake-up-call feel to it. The song really changes tracks for me here. It's really quite odd. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO? Never losing the funeral feel, it marches into other possibilities. One more trip to the funeral occurs. Then as the chorus repeats, the wake up call intensifies. The near silence surrounding the final line emphasizes it, and in my mind, gives the words a prophecy feel. You will die also. if Is your halo slipping down? Take it the fuck off then. |

***********Now for the song: "So glad to see you well" It seems more trademark powerful sarcasm, at least the foundation for it. "Overcome and completely silent now With heavens help You cast your demons out" A brief attempt to relate to the songs subject, to show that he understands where he/she feels they are in life; that epiphany "saved" feeling that one gets their role in their club, be it Jesus' club, Bill W.'s, or any other.. That hope and purity one feels. It could easily be allusion to both. As of yet I see no reference to the social aspect of these clubs so I will leave that box closed. Could be an slight attempt to strengthen the effect on, and understanding for the subject; like a little boy quietly setting the ball on the Tee. Reference lies here also to that persons reverence in prayer or meditation, just him being a mirror. It helps set up the following. There is a very different tension than with what we have experienced with apc/tool before. (I apologize to any non-tool fans that find displeasure in seeing them talked about so closely; I fully appreciate many levels of difference in the two bands) There is something so different about this song. It's like true, raw emotion beyond any I have heard so far, easily my favorite song on the album. Interesting that the song is one of his shorter ones, I would assume they really had it mind as 'single' potential. If I had this gift of a song to give, I would also want to send it to the most people. As it stands, I have to play it over 3 times each time I play it. and once again my dumbass, ADD-excuse-using self will return to the lyrics: "And not to pull your halo down Around your neck and tug you off your cloud " This is where the possibilities split a little, that of intention: The primary direction this appears to go is that of sarcasm. In that case this would be a lie. It would be just mean and only intended to knock down ones ego. Regardless of intention however, I have to imagine it would be received in that nature. The possibility exists however that there is true sincerity here. Personally I don't think the song would have been written without this same sincerity. The writer fully understands that his true message can be lost and taken as such a brutal blow; a blow to a fairly simple mind, a fairly simple ego. I think its a little of both. He takes a 'pregnant pause' prior for attention. He used such vivid, crushing words to awaken the subject. It bittersweet he still tries (sleeping beauty, 3 Libras(ok that was a dig at the others)) but honestly, I think it's in part why he writes to all of us; to try to awaken, to create powerful opportunities for us to open our eyes. I suspect however, he thinks it’s mostly his own catharsis. So what is this powerful message? "But I'm more than just a little curious How you're planning to go about Making your amends" I perked up when I first saw the DUI and the 'but they are still dead, asshole'. It offered a very simple explanation that fits. But it does not fit between the lines, for me. “Step Eight: Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.” Making your amends is plural. I don’t believe this a reference to a single wrongdoing, and the following is my own limb to climb out on. It is more likely referring to the 8th(and related) step of putyourfavoritewordhere Anonymous; the process involving writing down all of your shortcomings and wrongdoings, owning them, releasing to a higher power, and then wherever possible making amends for them. But not to get lost in the specifics, the process is favored in many facets of society. I don’t believe he disagrees with the foundation of these clubs, (there is love and truth there) just the temples that sheep build on them. The build up here is tremendous, you know its coming, its bad, it hurts, it in some way disagrees with the subject, but what is it: "to the dead" so many questions here, after all this is the climax of the song. It's been argued about in here much. It's his point. What exactly is the point? Who the fuck are the dead? I think the dead are plural, but who are they? Is it as simple as "you can’t talk to dead people"? I just don’t buy it, maybe if Zack were writing the song but not Maynard. Now I will finally get to my point... The life prior to this pointless epiphany was obviously worse. Otherwise the change would not have... etc. Who were the people in his/her life? Angels and Saints? My bet is they were just like him/her. He/She tells all of the other recoverees he/she feels so alive now. To best relate this to him/her, Maynard calls them dead. I don’t think it can be said better. Its not a far stretch from his metaphoric use of the word sleep, just a more intense metaphor. I DO NOT THINK HE DISAGREES WITH THE PROCESS, just the CORRUPTION and …. Maybe it was just to knock our angel friend down a couple notches. And just for fun, to debate the more simplistic view, anyone who thinks the Writer is a right winged conservative 'punishment and fairness' concerned people raise your hand...Eye for an eye stuff? Put your hand down Zack. He may use the idea, but there would be more, as in this case. The concern is not unforgivable acts. That is a distraction from the intent. Who paints with a wider paintbrush than Maynard? It's a very effective stab at spiritual complacency. "Recall the deeds as if They're all someone else's Atrocious stories Now you stand reborn before us all So glad to see you well" Sounds like any AA/ Alanon meeting to me. Its just another society, subject to people losing (or otherwise not having) touch with what is true. People there sometimes seem focus on the wisdom of the past and appear to now be above it all, many are stepping into more idealistic shoes than they wear all alone when their 'students' are not looking. It's more backdrop, supports my 12 step stuff from earlier, and strengthens my tree branch. It also clarifies his/her halo, like the shoes I mentioned; Focusing on halo (risen above it) stuff is a trap in its own. The people requiring amends to aren’t going to (in this instance) be better off, they may not (in this case) be real, and honestly I believe the epiphany is half hearted and occurred mostly in the ego, it wont stick. a very stupid idealistic social game The particular amends he sings of don’t fix anything; they are mostly inadvertent lies anyway. But again that seems now to be a side point. Maybe its just my point. Your actions tell the truth. So do it. Be real with others, deposit your ego at the next available bathroom stall, and forget your appearance. I think that lies deepest between the lines, for me. |

Either I skipped too many postings, or I really am the first to comment on the aforementioned’s lie, (maybe he would do better to post in "the package"). | And to any of you that agree with me, and the others about finding out the 'now' obvious reasoning behind the music, and you maybe realized that most of the songs hold a lust of new relationship in their mystery. For me finding so many reasons has matured my lust into love. I miss the mystery, I hope they do get that new one out in 05. In the meantime I found something where the violin beautifully takes maynards place and electrics are replased with classicals. Its new and gives me some of the same mysterical feelings I had when I didn't love each of those songs as well, and only lusted of them ....Look for a string quartet tribute to tool vol.I & II. | |

Maybe a different angle, It's been a while. Here goes: When we chose to live, we chose the pain as well as the joy. Our souls desire both. This song was written originally in pain, not at the 'why me, please, please, please' stage, but at the awakening and rebirth. The writer awakens(Delusional) and moves on, its his painful choice. Maybe he stayed because the word soulmate was going through his head, over and over. Perhaps he felt a sense of cosmic responsibilty. He truly loved her. In the awakening, however, he sees that he did not love all of her, he loved the potential her from his perspective. We all have heard the old axiom about our not having the ability to change the unwilling, but, "what if she sees how I love her without limits, and that 'inspires' her to change"(Ego). Well that may be a possibilty, but you-know-who crapped out. She hurt him, I'd say infidelity was involved. This went on for a while. Then he chose to grow and move on. Touching on the 3 libras parallel, there is 1 thing lacking from this song that 3 libras has. It is Serene. It lacks the the sarcasm, anger and raw pain. Just listen to it. Two different angles, both of personal expression and perhaps one last attempt to wake her up. I'm sure she didn't, despite the shoddy fascade of 'lies'. He remains compassionate though, due to the type of awakening. He realizes on some small level why we are here, he aligns his purpose with what small slice of true he sees. He loves her in a larger more powerful way, knows she wont awaken, sings her one last pretty song, and lives on, elsewhere. No need to tell her hurtful things like 'appearantly nothing' anymore (however true that may be). The purpose of love and relationships does not always concern forever. The point of life is to feel, and to love, and to be (aware). There are those we bring into our lives that we recprocate subconcious lessons with, and then move on. That is actually beautiful. It's hard to see, but when we do, it clears the fog, it strengthens the soul. It allows you to see her beauty despite your dark memories, and be calm once again. The storm has passed, the sky is clear, embrace who you are now, sleeping beauty was there for you all along, you were just confused about the roles, you had to be. |

For myself, sometimes when I hear truth, no matter how much haze there is, it rings. The tdn/devo answer certainly rings true. However, I now have the same feeling that I had when I crept in mom's closet and killed Christmas. The song has had several, personal meanings to me including during my current divorce from, she who is best described in APC's 'The Package'. Did I tear the song for myself now by learning the unintended? I hope not. It seems I have added a subtle additional layer of pain to the song for myself. As for those who say well, think for you're self, don't use others words; tool, for me has often been a 'tool' for being and feeling. Books and art do the same for many as well. In fact, in a book:Richard Bach's 'illusions' describes a messiahs handbook (don't think that, it's not that kind of book), you just pick a page and the answer for the day is there. You can find the answer to what you want to know in anything, because in ourselves, is our connectedness with that thing, with everything is all that really is. Not the crap we see everyday, that crap needs to be flushed anyway. Much apologies for the digresion. |
