why does afi never put their songs with the best lyrics on easy to find recordings? Hmmmm... Caroline? Davey's mom is a devout Catholic so that may have something to do with the crucifix. Caroline... this is my favorite song of all time and my band is covering the demo version of it. (you all should listen to the demo, it is much more emotional) Here is my explanation: This song makes me think of a dance and the youthful love that Davey has felt but never had returned to him. This Celluloid Dream= A fantasy about love like in the movies. Happy endings and romance. Calling tears from deep inside, oh, you're so exquisite (imagine Davey seeing the one he loves and crying because she is so beautiful to him.) And in the mirror, all midnight eyes (He sees her getting ready in her mirror. Midnight eyes might be a name he would like to call her, if he got the chance to be with her and see her at such a late hour.) Oh, if I could remain, but it's just a visit (he can't stay in this "movie" fantasy. Because for him, all love ends.) All midnight eyes read "vacancy" Twisted, twisting (the girl's eyes in the mirror are vacant because she is not returning Davey's love) To the lovely dancing lights, I begged, "May I cut in?" (this is a metaphor for the requitted love Davey sees shared everyday, but never recieves) But they never stopped playing "their song" (he never gets his turn to have requitted love.) Of a joyous song the sing, I've heard whispers On a freezing note, I resonate (He hears the things the lovers do "joyous song" and he hears something the girl he loves says "a freezing note" and he freezes in sadness.) Just like romantic verses, just like a joyous end Just like a memory, it twists me Just like romantic verses, just like a joyous end Twist... twisting me (Just like a romantic song and a happy ending, the love he sees everyday twists him and makes him sad because he doesn't feel he will ever have love.) You land as lightly as the new snow, cinematic (she gently embraces...) Onto the melting boy, and melt away (the one she loves) You light as gently, you're so cinematic (this love is just like in the movies...perfect.) Bathed in your radiance, I melt (she's so beautiful he melts) In the glitter, in the dark, sunk into velvet Praying this will never end (looks like Davey finally got his chance with this girl and he's living it up) In the shadow of a star, in static pallor (in the shadow "presence" of a star "the girl" in static pallor "Davey's eternal paleness") I realized I never began (he wakes up from his dream and realizes he dreamt of being with the girl but he's really not.) And the "all the colors and all gray part" has to do with the "dance/romance" theme... all the lovers... upon breakups... all will be sad. **** And there's my opinion. This song means a lot to me. |
