I think this song is abut a man who has gone away, maybe on a long business trip or something, and it dawns on him how much he loves a particular woman in his life. He's coming back to Washington to be with her. On the other hand, it could be some sort of reference to George Washington....although I really couldn'd figure that out if it was. Yes, it's a beautiful song. I love the little mandolin riff. |

Keanu once remarked that this was one of his f avorite Dogstar songs, because the riffs have shades of Joy Division. While this song does not overtly remind me of Joy Division, I do like the lyrics and the melody. I especially love the lyric set, "...that didn't work, that let me down..etc". This song is obviously about two friends (or a man and woman in a relationship) who are trying to stay sober. He is pleading with her to try harder "Have you no pride to stay straight/You've become everythign you hate". Nicely said, and a good tight musical treatment to the song, Joy Division-esque or not. |

OK, first of all, please don't slam Dogstar. No, they were not the best most perfect group in the world, but they did TRY for a while. And say what you will, Keanu Reeves' bass playing is just fine. Give these guys a break, wontcha? First I want to comment on Bret Domrose's lyrics. I really do like them a lot. He seems to put a lot of thought into what he says, and he can turn a phrase nicely. I love "Hello to my hollow one with a halo." What an amazing phrase! I love singing it! His lyrics are not mystical or filled with hidden meanings...he is direct, sometimes to the point of seeming too simplistic. But if you listen to this (and some of the other songs on the album) enough, you get it -- and you get him. While other songs on the Happy Ending album could stand a bit of improvement (or perhaps a tad more musical originality), this one really stands out, along with "Corner Store", "Slipping Down," and Washington. |
