| Pink Floyd – Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2 Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| my interpetation of this song, although it most likely is not the most accurate, is one to make you think. if at anytime during your high school or college years, you have learned or been exposed to existentialism and the writers of that specific genre such as Albert Camus, Soren Kierkegaard, or any of the many others, you will pick up on this explaination faster than the rest. Existenialism is the philiosophical movement in literature that stressed the importance of indivdualism and that we exist in an 'abusrd' or indifferent universe. Albert Camus, one of the most famus existentialist, belived that life is 'absurd' in that it was meaningless. If you read the essay by Camus called 'The Myth of Sisyphus' you can relate the ideas in that to the line "All in all you're just another brick in the wall." 'The Myth of Sisyphus' is a greek legend about a man named Sisyphus who betrayed the greek gods and was punished by having to push a rock up a hill, but everytime he got the rock up the hill the gods would knock it down so he would have to push it back up and this process is said to go on forever. Camus believed that Sisyphus is an "absurd hero" because how he relates to the modern day workman. Sisyphus works everyday to push that rock up the hill only to have it knocked back down again, thus making his life absurd or meaningless. This relates to the modern day workman in that, the workman works at the same job day after day without no real goal, thus making their life absurd or meaningless. now if you relate that idea to the line "All in all you're just another brick in the wall." you see that it can be translated into that no matter what, our lives are meaningless and are "just another brick in the wall." | |
