| Mason Jennings – Adrian Lyrics | 17 years ago |

This song to me is clearly the act of lynching an African American individual... The song is a simple yet incredibly powerful one, Adrian is the song of the narrator of the song. The narrator is being hung, but the tone that he takes during the hanging, not fear, not anger, but one of complete calmness makes the song that much more powerful. When we look at the hatred lyrics, "Let your burning hatred go Learn yourself until you know That fear is where all hatred begins" He is telling his son that he cannot hate in the same manner that the white people hate blacks. And where does this hate come from, is there any justifiable reason for the hate? No, rather hatred comes from fear. The whites feared the blacks, and because of that, they hate the blacks. The we reference is toward him and his son. "From now on I am part of you." What the narrator is attempting to do at the point of his death is to try to stop hate. Even during the time of his hanging, he is concerned that his son does not follow the same path that countless numbers have before, and by doing that he will start the change that will eventually lead to the hate stopping. You'll be on the bottom when the boat breaks through could have to do with this and the idea that he will help lead this movement towards understanding. HE wants adrian to understand what is going on here is not the product of bad people or the attempt to try to reach unattainable goals, but rather repeated patterns throughout history which do nothing but facilitate hate to remain and be powerful. "Turn you head but dont fail to see". The last words of a father about to die, he doesnt want his son to watch as he is killed, but he also doesnt want him to forget what happened here and to take the lessons that he was taught and carry them on throughout his life and spread that idea to others. So, thats what I think |

| Tom Waits – Soldier's Things Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This song is about a yard sale, but to me, waits is really playing on the idea that a soldier is selling all of his things even though they mean the world to him, they are just things. With the lines before he covers the soldier items, what he is talking about is just really junk, an old radio, a crappy car, and without skipping a beat, he continues to apply this unvalued attitude towards his items. The thing that hits the hardest is he is giving away his medals, his medals that signify his bravery and his accomplishments. The reason he is able to do this is that a soldier is not the sum of his items, but the memories that he has the experiences. He is not a soldier because he has these things, he is a soldier because he is. So, basically, to me it is a song where although a soldier gives away all of his items, he is still a soldier through his memories and experiences and not the items that he has from it. |

| John Lennon – How Do You Sleep? Lyrics | 20 years ago |

I just learned of this song a couple of days ago, i mean, I have heard it, but i guess I really never read into it until a couple of days ago. Obviously this song is about Paul, but, the thing is, when I first heard this, I thought, wow, I cant believe he could write something so mean. But, after listening to it and thinking about it, you almost have to love the song. John has always wrote songs about what he felt passionatly about, be it war, peace, womens rights, etc. and that is what I, and I believe most, love about him. He didnt ignore his feelings on Paul cause they would be viewed as taboo (much like his views on peace) but wrote what he always did, how he felt. Its a powerful song that I think he regretted doing in hindsight, but he wrote what he felt at the time, and that made John great. Does this remind n e one else about the rap battles that go on today when people fight through songs. Is this the first one? I wonder |

| Dave Matthews Band – Cry Freedom Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
yea, its a great song, i mean, the biggest and most important lyrics is in the chours : Hands and feet are all alike But gold between divide us Hands and feet are all alike But fear between divide us I mean, he is just saying, look at us, we are all the same, regardless of color, race, religion. Look at something like a hand, or a foot, they are all pretty much indentical, and only "gold between" seperates one from another, baiscally saying MONEY is a divider, and he says "fear" divides, which is true in the fact that we fear the unknown. He is just saying, we are all the same, and there is no reason for hate. Man, this guy is good |
