Bad Religion – Atheist Peace Lyrics 15 years ago
Gallium31, you are simply historically incorrect on this point. Hitler was Catholic until the day he died, according to his colleague Albert Speer. There are many quotes from him supporting Christianity, and he boasted of having removed atheism from Germany. To believe Hitler was an atheist is to believe a simple historically-proven falsehood.

TISM – (He'll Never Be an) Old Man River Lyrics 16 years ago
Now I'm bored and there's no stopping
I need another celeb to fill my coffin
Where will I get my next drug action?
Odds on it'll be Michael Jackson

... Chillingly prescient or what?

Dido – White Flag Lyrics 21 years ago
I also like this song because I publicly predicted the moment I heard it that it would go to No. 1 in Australia. And five weeks later, it did. It's good to be me.

Dido – White Flag Lyrics 21 years ago
The idea of the girl accepting that the relationship was over but pointedly refusing to move on regardless, compared to the refusal to "wave the white flag" or "abandon ship" makes this a very different metaphor for lost love than most songs. Dido seems to be that rare event: an artist who is portrayed as pure MOR pop but turns out to be more interesting than expected. It's all too often the other way around.

The Dresden Dolls – Truce Lyrics 21 years ago
What an incredible metaphor: relationship breakup as the 9/11 attack. This band go lyrically where an awful lot of others would fear to tread.

Gary Numan – We Have a Technical Lyrics 21 years ago
This was an early song, so it is interesting to see that Numan decided to borrow some of its lyrics for later songs: "i could crawl around the floor just like i'm real" appears in "Metal" and "the image breaks down" is in "Cars".

Gary Numan – Are 'Friends' Electric? Lyrics 21 years ago
In live versions of this song, Numan puts another lyric line over the six-note descending sequence that repeats at the end (it fades out on the record, but live he plays it four times). Anyone know what that lyric is?

Buzzcocks – Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've) Lyrics 21 years ago
Buzzcocks "Ever Fallen In Love" seems to be about the only genuine punk song to break across the mainstream commercial barrier. From sitcom soundtracks to Shrek ... it is also one of very few punk songs to be covered (and to chart!) in a non-punk version, by Fine Young Cannibals (a distinctly inferior copy). Millions of non-punk songs have gone the OTHER way of course!

Gary Numan – I'm An Agent Lyrics 21 years ago
Numan's practice of writing individual lyric lines he thought of and liked into a notebook then collecting them into a song later seems to have reached a culmination with this one. Virtually not one line has any meaning related to any other line ... stream of consciousness? More like stream of UNconsciousness!

The sheer SPEED and rhythm of the lyric saves it though, plus the tense palm-mute distorted guitar ... shades of his earlier Tubeway Army album stuff.

I still wonder who the hell "John the God" is, mind you.

Fischerspooner – Emerge Lyrics 21 years ago
The synth bassline in this goes round in my head for ever. Incredibly catchy song. I saw the video and there are some audio/video synch tones (a single 'beep' noise with a white dot on the video - it's used to make sure the video and audio are time-synched correctly) in it that appear to have been left in the audio recording as well. Maybe they just liked the sound of them.

I suspect the lyrics were chosen to sound good against that killer synth hook, rather than have any meaning. They sure look bland in writing!

Gary Numan – Cars Lyrics 21 years ago
One thing that doesn't seem to get mentioned much is the way some of the instrumentation of the song imitates the sounds in cars. The initial wavering note sounding like the ignition, and then the high single synth note held for four entire loops of the main six-note bass riff then descending through a major chord sequence, to sound like a gear-shift sequence. Very creative.

Pulp – Common People Lyrics 21 years ago
A wonderful song-lyric. Wish I'd written it. About rich people who "think that poor is cool": immediately makes me think of people who spend $$$ on pre-ripped (thus "punk") jeans. And the trend for oversize shorts and pants, aping the hand-me-down fashipon of the ghetto.

And now, in one of the most inappropriate cover versions of all time, "Common People" by William Shatner! I kid you not! Brilliant! Beam me up, Scotty, it can never get better than this!

The Dresden Dolls – Girl Anachronism Lyrics 21 years ago
This song really grabbed me the first time I saw/heard it on Rage, which is rare for me ... great to see wildly NEW music, and from America (home of MOR - yeccch) no less!

Limp Bizkit – Behind Blue Eyes (The Who cover) Lyrics 21 years ago
Hmmm, I've read through all these comments and there's one possible meaning to the lyrics that occurred to me which hasn't been mentioned ...

1) The song was written by Pete Townshend of The Who.
2) Pete Townshend pleaded guilty in a British court to downloading and viewing child pornography (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/music/3352099.stm).
3) NOW read through the lyrics of the song viewing it as a paedophile regretting his vice ...

... interesting, huh?
